Day Off

I originally had Friday off (i have Fridays off until the end of the year) but because my Boss is an indecisive fart (a term I've taken from my Mom when she's ranting in Portuguese, at least that's what I think it is, LOL "peido indeciso") and left certain things for a trip on SUNDAY hanging, I decided to hop back into work on Friday to deal with that, and since he's still on his trip today (Monday), I'd stay home today.

No idea why I slept so poorly last night. I usually sleep through the night with no issues. But last night, dunno why. And then it was pouring at around 4 or 5 in the morning, and I just sort of spaced out and looked out the window until 6. Then I figured I might as well get up and start preparing for the day........... and then I remembered, I'm off today.

Anyway, there are no off days for dog walking, so I couldn't really sleep in anyway.

Sis is off to do her freelance dog grooming thing, Mom is off to her swimming class (or is that aqua-aerobics?), and Dad, seeing that I'm at home, made his mad dash for freedom: he went shopping and left me to house sit the cleaner.

It does feel like taking Mondays off is better than Fridays, if this peaceful mood continues all Mondays. Fridays Mom is still home and she'll be nagging and complaining about everything, breaking the peace.

I did say I'll mosey out around lunch to meet with my Sis, she wants to eat at IKEA, I don't really. I don't mind the food court in the mall where the spiffy new IKEA is, but I'm not confident that the actual IKEA cafeteria is good. I need to get some extra pages for my binder file whatever-you-call-it. I'm planning to pick up where I left off on one of the Coursera courses I was on. If not any of the Coursera courses, then at least get a start on that German book that a colleague loaned me. I don't even know when he expects me to return it. But since I know some (very very little some) German, the beginning of any book just feels boring. Guess I'll have to trudge through that and get somewhere that seems to challenge me then.

Since the IKEA is near the huge library, I might as well go down there.... but no, I have enough books on my Kindle. READ THE KINDLE FIRST!!! But of course, every new book is a sparkly thing to my eyes. Is there a book club I can join? It may help to push me to decide to read something. It's not that I'm not reading, it's that I'm not reading books. I'm reading A LOT! I practically whittle my life away on AO3 (fanfiction), damnit. Some of the stuff there are good and practically novel-length. Though there's a lot of shitty stuff as well, I know. I've got to get back into BOOKS though! Guess I'll do a "walk around" on Goodreads after this to see what the clubs there are reading. Then again, usually these books are hard to find here in Macau. Meh. It's tough.

If the rain lets out by this evening then I'll even go out on a run. I ran on the treadmill yesterday and it was just terrible. I'm an outdoor runner through and through, but what can you do when it's pouring? I'm not running in the rain.

Sorry to hear you had such a rough time sleeping last night. Hopefully tonight will be better for you!

You should def look into a book club if you're looking for some accountability for reading. Not to mention the ya social aspect of it, if that's something you're looking for.

Ha ha, hope the whether clears up so you can go on your run. I actually like to walk in the rain but I also like to listen to music while I do so but then I get paranoid about my phone getting messed up so I don't do it for too long.

Thanks! I guess I should be in for a good sleep tonight to make up for it.

I’ll probably be more of a lurker even if I do participate in a book club, but we’ll see. I did actually visit the library just now and got a book, teehee!

Looks like I’ll be getting my run after all! Fingers crossed the storm clouds stay away!

I hope so!

ha ha, but you could be their lurker! But I get it, it's not everyone's cup of tea. They're not my thing, personally. Ooooooooh, what book did you get?

Awesome news!

I got girl with dragon tattoo and will start it on October.

In the end, I didn’t get the run because it looked like it would rain (really dark ominous clouds), it never did rain the whole night!

Nice! I've never read it! I know it has been a book that has had a lot of hype in the past though, so I'm excited to hear your thoughts on in.

Oh boooo! Maybe next time!

I love the "indecisive fart". I may use that in the future :D

Can you get books from Amazon in other places to download on your Kindle, or is it paper books that are hard to find in Macau?

LOL yeah it’s pretty funny when my mom uses it in Portuguese! I guess I’ve imported it into my English vocabulary.

I could get books from Amazon but shipping is brutal. I guess now that I’m working I can afford it, but the impression I got when I was younger was that shipping is so expensive that I just shouldn’t bother. I do have a Kindle but many big titles (mostly from the big publishing houses) have regional restrictions (publishing rights or something) so not all titles are available to me. And Amazon is also clever in that they allow me to buy a kindle from them but all the perks do not reach me. I can’t subscribe to kindle unlimited, I’m not eligible to use the kindle lending library, etc...

I do buy some kindle books, but still having an actual book feels much better! (I’m short of storage space so try not to buy too many books)

Love it. Multilingualism is such a rich source for humour, and all you have to do is literally translate things sometimes :D

Oh wow that really sucks! I was trying to think of what I did when I lived in Jordan, but then I remembered I had a German account then (Jordan doesn't have Amazon), so that won't work.
It's really annoying when you get different levels of access depending on the country.

Are your public libraries an option for paper/digital books?

Macau is a funny place.... official languages are officially Portuguese and Chinese, but Portuguese is non-existent here, it’s not even on any school syllabus (except for proper Portuguese schools)

More people speak English than Portuguese here.

That being said, libraries here tend to only stock up on materials in Chinese. There is a pretty good selection of English paper books, but with digital and ebooks, it’s all Chinese only.

Interesting! For some reason I thought English was one of Macau's official languages, must've confused that with someplace else!

Oh no that's a really difficult situation for a reader :(

Hey! I just read your entry here and will catch up on others soon. :) looking forward to getting to know you.

I don't know much about Macao other than it is a very old Portuguese colonial dominion. Does Portugal still have it, so to speak? And I know it has a lot of history to it. Tell me a little more, obrigado :P

Ah, I guess the easy explanation is that it was a colony of Portugal, though I did read somewhere that technically it’s really not a colony. I need to study up again to know for certain. Anyway, it’s not anymore under Portuguese rule as Macau was handed over back to China on 20 December 1999. It’s now known as the RAEM (Portuguese acronym for MSAR - Macau Special Administrative Region). Official languages still Portuguese and Chinese so on government forms you still see both languages, but apart from the actual Portuguese people here, hardly anyone actually knows the language.

It’s not a required subject in schools (unless it’s a Portuguese or Portuguese affiliated school). It’s a funny situation.

I myself know Portuguese because my mom is Portuguese and I spoke it at home. But give me a newspaper, I can’t really understand what’s written. Oops haha

Interesting...again obrigado for that. There is a friendly Portuguese couple that I know at the gym that just arrived here from Brazil, and know very little English so I am getting phrases and things from online :P
