2023.12.07-10 - Taipei Day 2

Day 2! I woke up bright and early, my usual 6.30am, but I don't have to walk any dogs so... my day started early. In hindsight, I should have taken it more easy, but it's neither here nor there.

Breakfast was at Shihai Soy Milk 四海豆漿大王.  I thought I'd get the egg roll and soy milk to eat there and the rice wrap to go. But when I finished the egg roll and the soy milk, I felt like I could still eat. So gobble up the rice wrap I did. Then I felt way too full haha.

Made my way to the MRT to go up to Tamsui.

Untitled

But I made a stop at Beitou. It was quite a fun detour.

Untitled

I only heard of this place being mainly a hot springs destination, but I didn't know much apart from that.

Untitled

It had some nice spots. There was a public hot spring but you need to wear a swimsuit to get in there. I wasn't planning to get in the hot spring anyway. I knew I would be wearing those hiking boots that would be a pain to take off and put back on, so I didn't plan on actually going in there. (Later at the Museum, we had to take off our shoes, and when I put them back on, a seemingly useless strap on the back broke off. Maybe used to hang the shoes when not in use)

Walked a little further on to the thermal valley. Stank like rotten eggs, but that's the sulphur.

Untitled

It was a quick visit though, it wasn't very big. Just walked around the smoking lake.

Untitled Untitled

It was like 429 degrees Celsius, so, I needed ice cream! Well, a popsicle.

Untitled

Along the way I read some signages and pieced together that this was some Japanese-occupied place (thus the very Japanese-style hot spring customs). And that Beitou became something like a Taiwan-Hollywood place. This bridge is one of those, apparently.

Untitled

There was a place called the Plum Garden that is a restored Japanese house. But there were no plums in there. There were bamboo trees though.

Untitled

And then the Beitou Museum. Again a Japanese style building so we had to take off our shoes. These symbols reminded me of the Pokémon symbols (game boy era Pokémon)

Untitled

A very interesting art installation. Words hung from somewhere make it look like the words are floating.

Untitled

Ah, and then the public library! I wanted to go see it. I didn't go in though.

Untitled

It was the first time I see a fountain sprout... take the form of a duck.

Untitled

Before the onwards journey to Tamsui, I swung by this.... tea place touting to be "real traditional flavors". I ordered a lemon and sour plum drink and it was surprising refreshing and delicious.

Untitled

Got to Tamsui and braved the bus system and Got to the Wuji Tianyuan Temple. Guess I got there in the wrong season. It would have been amazing to see in Spring when the Cherry trees blossom.

Untitled

Some people were doing some blessing stuff or maybe minor exorcising stuff or whatnot.

Untitled

Saw this little guy as I was leaving!

Untitled

There wasn't really much to do here though.

Untitled Untitled

As I was on the bus going back to Tamsui, it turned a corner and I saw this monster of a fluffy cat-doll. I didn't have time to shoot a photo so after I googled it... it is an elementary school! The kids here must be plagued by the stuff of nightmares!

Untitled

Back in Tamsui... Frankie Popsicle!

Untitled

Sorry my dear Frankie, I'm eating you!. It's a chocolate flavor, and as expectedly, it didn't really taste good. But that's all for the photo op!

Untitled

I'm not knowledgeable of puzzle brands, but I'd recommend Pinto anytime.

Untitled

Grumpy cat!

Untitled

So at around 4pm-ish, I decided to get a late lunch. This is a one-person yakiniku. Beef set, it was yum!

Untitled Untitled

A salad bar and soup and drinks are included with the set I ordered, so I ate up.

Untitled

I wanted to go back to the hostel by 6pm ish, but figured, the night is still young. I went to search for a Sport b. Store (a side collection or sub-brand to the Agnes b.) and Google Maps said it was somewhere. I went to that somewhere, but there was none. So I passed by the nearest night market...

Untitled

... and had some dessert! Black sesame dumplings!

Untitled Untitled

On the way back I went to one of those 20-min prescription eyeglasses shop. It's amazing how many things they check for, as shop. When I go for my yearly eye-check at my optical doctor's, she doesn't even check for half the things.

This is a very cute glasses. It's Mickey Mouse! The hands are hidden so you don't see them, but I'll know they're. There.

Untitled Untitled

I didn't take a photo, yet, but I actually bought 2 pairs of glasses. One from Owndays, a Taiwan brand of the same-day prescription glasses, and this Mickey one was from J!NS, a brand from Japan. And oh, I actually found a Sport b. In this shopping centre and got myself a very cute pair of the Sport b. Dino earrings! It's all packed up so I didn't take a photo yet. You'll see them sometime later!
