elusivek: (Coffee Break)
The day did not start early, the day started normal. Walked Frankie, double checked my bags, and I went on to the airport. Had breakfast at the airport, and OMG this is the first time I had the Cinnamon Danish from Starbucks and it is DELICIOUS! IKEA Cinnamon Rolls have the stand aside, LOL. Because it's a Danish, it's flakey with a slight crisp. I LOVE IT!
Untitled

Flight got delayed for around an hour. The food served wasn't bad. I was impressed.

Pilot managed to make good time and landed Singapore only 30 minutes later than the original arrival. Got myself a Grab ride, and got to the hotel this time. I'm staying in Chinatown, and for the price, I was expecting some sort of run down place, but honestly, I do not dislike this hotel and this set up.

You can make the bathroom walls turn cloudy then you can't look through. Everything's in the room, and it's larger than what I'm used to. Also, despite having only a shower, this is the FIRST hotel that the shower stall does not seep water out to the toilet area.

So today was release day of the Hobonichi Techo, but the Hobonichi gang broke the internet LOL. I wasn't able to place my order in the morning. So in Singapore, I decided to head off to a shop that sold Hobonichi. Found a shop, and got the stuff together, then made some calculations and... even with the shipping cost from Japan, buying online was cheaper than buying in Singapore. Later in the evening I go online again and the Hobonichi website is working again. So I placed my order.

Got hit by a sudden pang of hunger. I should have done better research but obviously I didn't haha. So I just went to a random restaurant. In hindsight, I should have gone for some Ba-Ku-Teh.
Untitled

The area around the hotel I'm staying at, in Chinatown.
Untitled

The Chinatown night market.
Untitled

At the end of the street there was this... Temple? Mosque? I think there was a wedding going on?
Untitled

There was a lot of chanting and singing.
Untitled

Then I walked past this dessert place so... dessert sweet soup it is! This is a mix of a Sesame soup and Walnut soup (more like Sesame and Walnut paste). It was good. Thick and yummy!

Untitled

This must still be Chinatown.

Untitled

Yes, still Chinatown. I had a SGD $1 ice cream.

Untitled

I decided I wanted to sort out the souvenirs tonight already, so off I went over to Bugis (which was in the direction of Funan, my first stop earlier, so I could have saved a trip, honestly)

Untitled

I took the bus there, so then decided I'd walk back. It's just over 2km. It's walkable. But. I walk by weird stuff. Such as this church lighted up in red, wtf (it looks like a Chinese honor table)

Untitled

This one was across the street so I couldn't go in to see (well I could if I went to the end of the street to cross over, but I was lazy).

Untitled

The Chinese chamber of commerce or something like that, I think.

Untitled

And then this Armenian church that's gone all disco. Yes, those lights are flashing!

Untitled

Getting near, Clark Quay, and this is where I'm a little more familiar with.

Untitled

Back in Chinatown.

Untitled

Nice quote in the corridor of the hotel.

Untitled

So my Pikachu luggage tag got messed up (the raised slid that holds the address paper has come off) so I saw a souvenir shop below with another Pikachu, so I got it. NOW I notice there's actually a defect. Pikachu's ears have black tips! This one's missing them!

Untitled

There, it wouldn't hold the tag. I guess I could super glue it, but oh well.

So... because of (very, very, very silly) reasons, I'm flying out to Singapore tomorrow again. It was such an ad hoc decision. Ugh.

I'm going to dress really casual on this trip. Don't want to have to iron press anything. So I've put some effort to get my manicure done LOL. These are stickers and then with a layer of cured gel (just to give the sticker some protection)
Untitled

Not going to have a lot of free time, so I won't be doing much sightseeing this time, but i have 2 targets in mind for now. One dessert place for Sunday night, and then a lunch place for Monday. If I happen upon a Fair Price supermarket then I will go there too (there's something in particular I saw on an IG that's available there). Will go meet an ex-colleague for dinner on Monday.

If I manage to actually settle everything on Monday, then I have Tuesday morning free. If not, more working Tuesday morning, then evening flight back home. And just like that, it would make me miss 1 Mandarin class. I really don't want to miss those classes as i will be missing around 4 classes in October for my trip to Austria.

It's starting to get more difficult in the Mandarin class, so it's starting to get more interesting for me. It was a bit too beginner in the last 2 semesters, so I'm happy I'm now actually getting to learn something new.
elusivek: (plane rainbow)
Aaaaand! Here I am, back from my business trip to Seoul. This time the flights were more pleasant. For economy class, it was nice.
Obviously I can't show anything work-related, but yeah, here's a rough run-down of the trip.

It was a 9am flight so I had to leave home around 6ish (company car, thanks). Once landed in Seoul, I had booked a full-day car for the team, so we had a quick trip to our first stop and meeting. After meeting, it was time for dinner!

Korean BBQ!
Untitled

Since our hotel was in Myeongdong area, we went for a gander around the Myeongdong Night Market. I sort of had some memory of it, but then also I don't really remember it from my last trip.
Untitled

Cute sketch-portrait shops and pet stores!
Untitled Untitled

Actually what happened was, we had dinner as a team and walked around Myeongdong together. Then we all went back to the hotel. I had a short rest (10 minutes?) and then I went right back out because we were all too polite to actually do anything in the night market, LOL

And so, I did a more thorough walk-around.
Untitled Untitled

Seared Marshmallow ice cream? Check.
Untitled Untitled

There were a few of this HBAF or peanut/almond snack shop.
Untitled

There's this weird Line Friends Square thing, but you had to register for the "queue" and then wait for your turn.
Untitled

Anyway, short walk over then I went back to hotel to sleep.

Next morning, I started with a nice run!
Untitled

This day's assignment was to look at a few office units for rental.
Untitled Untitled

All in all, we visited 6 units. We have units that we like, and units that we don't like. Didn't have a proper lunch but we did stop for coffee two times, and we had a short break around lunch hour and took a quick look at the DDP. NOT recommended on a hot summer's day.
Untitled Untitled

There were some interesting AI stuff in the DDP as well. A photo-booth thing where you stand in front and then it'll give you suggestions on what clothes to buy.
Untitled

The second coffee/snack stop we made was in Gangnam area, Nudake. Very cute croissants (croissants?) shaped like an onigiri or some other such thing. Even the sofa had croissent legs!
Untitled
Untitled Untitled
Untitled Untitled

The croissants were actually pretty good.
Untitled

We wanted to go to the Starfield Library, but it was getting late and the team wanted their own "me" time, so we decided to head off to the Hyundai Seoul, the newest shopping mall, and disperse there. I did a quick walk around to see what it's like.
Untitled Untitled

Then I made my way by the subway to... the Starfield Library. The photos on the web made it look huge, but when I was there it was just pretty... small.
Untitled

After this, I braved the bus network. Which, I would like to recommend an app, called Moovit. It tells you the transportation directions (like bus, train, subway, etc). Since it was just too much sun during lunch, I made my way back to the DDP. The streets surrounding the DDP turned into a night market when I went there, full of stalls. So I did the requisite gander around too.
Untitled

Eventually made my way to this secret bar, Jean Frigo. It must be some French brand as the menu was showing the price in Euros as well. The facade just looks like a fake vegetable or fruit shop, but if you brave it and open one of the freezer doors, you get into the bar.
Untitled Untitled

It's mainly fruit juice based cocktail. But I wanted the cinammon apple punch and it was exactly that that was sold out.
Untitled Untitled

I had planned to eat at the bar but their dishes looked a bit heavy (everything was attractively cheese, cheese, and cheese) so I decided to skip it. Went back again to Myeongdong and had a croissant Taiyaki for dinner.
Untitled Untitled

Next day, after my morning run, and going into my Boss' room to wake him up and send him off, I went out for more walk around. I wanted to go to the cathedral, but I missed a road and instead walked around the block.
Untitled

Might as well look what's around.
Untitled Untitled

This "Maldong" place is soooooo weird. I will come back later as this was open (8:00am) but it was empty and products not ready yet.
Untitled Untitled

Went back to the hotel to send off my remaining 2 colleagues (I decided to stay an extra day), and after that, went for lunch. FINALLY! My favorite pork knuckle restaurant in Seoul! Myth Jokbal! But, I was one lonely person so I was only allowed to order from the set meal menu... so there were a bunch of other kimchi appetiser items that I don't eat.
Untitled

I decided to go to the National Palace Museum of Seoul, they had some interesting exhibits. Pity I was like 3 days too early as they had an interesting Notre Dame exhibit going on show 2-July.
Untitled

Really interesting stuff.
Untitled Untitled

Then to the Gyeongbokgung. I wasn't sure at first but mid-way I realized I was here before already.
Untitled

These kids were either part of a youth tour group or something, anyway, they were doing free guided tours. It was interesting to see their command of the English Language, they had pretty good pronunciation (American) when they were reciting the spiel, but when they had to speak freely, they couldn't. At the end of the tour they wanted me to say something about the tour so I just said it was nice to have brief guide and intro to different parts of the palace.
Untitled

Random palace pictures.
Untitled Untitled
Untitled Untitled

On the way back I finally managed to find the Cathedral entrance and went in there. I wanted to go light a candle for my Uncle as I missed his wake and funeral, but I guess candle lighting isn't a thing in Korea? They didn't even have a candle rack.
Untitled Untitled

I went back to that weird pink Maldong place for a donut.
Untitled Untitled

The peanut store, I got a bunch of nuts to bring home. Oh yeah I also stopped at a Olive Young for a bunch of facial face masks.
Untitled Untitled

I did walk over a few more places such as the Lotte Department Store but I didn't really have much to buy in those luxury chains where we had a store back home as well, so, not much shopping on that front.
Untitled

It then started to rain, and rained through the following day, so I just spent the morning having a nice breakfast and then hiding indoors until it was time to take the bus to the airport again.

elusivek: (plane rainbow)
The last day! I didn't have anything in particular planned for today because I knew I wouldn't have the heart for it anyway. I'm the type that just wants to arrive to the airport super early and start to feel uneasy if I'm hanging around too long out there.

As I decided the night before, I queued for the Fu Hang Soy Milk 阜杭豆漿. I queued an hour and a half. Yes. And my verdict is never will I be queueing for anything that looks to take more than 15 minutes. Maybe stretch it to 30 minutes if I know it's good.

Untitled

Michelin starred? No wonder.

Untitled

The savory soy milk was nice, it's like a congee/porridge but not exactly. But the Shaobin (a kind of bread/pancake I guess) was a let down. I asked for the thick pancake though so maybe it's the thin pancake that's popular? But I was all but one person so I couldn't order an array of stuff to try.

Untitled

Longshan Temple. Figured I should get the whole experience.

Untitled

I was a little amused by the offerings. In Macau, and I suppose southern China, it's usually just fruits. For some big occasions then maybe there'd be chicken. But here I see packaged snacks and like chips/crisps, and I don't know why it just amuses me greatly.

Untitled

I didn't snap a photo, but after Longshan Temple, I went to the underground mall right in front of it. It touted to have the longest palm-reading street there, and that they speak English and Japanese! With nothing better to do, I was tempted to get the full experience and have my palm/fortune read. But when I got down there and saw the set up I just couldn't make myself cross it. For one, I don't really believe in that stuff, and two, their set up was just too China-fake-stuff-esque to my liking.

Anyway, I made my way down to Yongkang street and saw some weird stuff.

Untitled

I saw there was a Din Tai Fung in the area so I went there, thinking to have some local DTF. But then queue time was like 2 hours, so I decided to forget it and went to a... snack bar? American diner? Dunno. Toasteria Cafe. Had a Shakshuka for lunch.

Untitled

Then I had an ice cream that I totally regretted the flavor. Rose and Lychee. I forgot I dislike edible rose flavor because it tastes like hand cream.

Untitled

By then I started to lose steam and interest and was constantly worried about the trip to the airport. It's silly, but I'm me, I can't help but be worried. I dandered around Taipei Main Station for a bit, then returned to the hostel to sit in the common room (no dogs this time) to rest for a bit and pick up my luggage, and then I left on my way to the airport.

Untitled

In the underground mall, there's so many weird things such those karaoke box up, and any corridor that has mirrors, these young dance groups would be there sitting around practicing.

Untitled

I saw I was super early to the airport train, so I decided to detour to the next corridor which is a long, long long long underground mall corridor. So much stuff. So many people!

Untitled

Granted, most of the things sold were just crap.

Untitled

Reached the train when it was just about to leave, so I let it go and waited for the next train (15minutes) this way I'm guaranteed to get a seat. Sunset time.

Untitled

Arrived too early so check in was not available yet. I don't get it with the lounges. They advertise and say "come early, and enjoy the lounge!" But then the check in counters open strictly 2 hours before the flight, so hey, what gives? I remember one airport (London? Forgot which), you could check in and drop bags on the day of, anytime. So this way you can still get into the restricted area with a lot of time.

Anyway, my credit card gives me 8 lounge visits per calendar year and since it's December, I might as well make use of it. Found myself a nifty cubicle thingamajig.

Untitled

Flight was uneventful apart from my strategic seat choice scored an empty seat between me and the other person (yay), but eventful at the same time because the other person's bubble tea exploded mid-flight and her seat and her ground was all wet and soaked, and again I had to wait a bit at de-plane so that the staff could clean up a bit before I stepped over stuff.

Dad brought the dog to pick me up though, so it was hilarious.

Untitled

It was fun, may there be more short solo trips!
elusivek: (thrilled! (Naga))
So with Day 3, I'm starting to look to returning back home already. Short holidays are so exciting before it starts but then you get sad very soon too haha.

The day starting with me making my way to Fu Hang Soy Milk 阜杭豆漿 for breakfast, but then when I saw the queue go around the block, I decided to cut my losses and crossed to the opposite Starbucks. After a short status update on Facebook, my friends tell me the queue goes very fast, so I still have a chance tomorrow to check that out.

Untitled

Wearing my new glasses already!

Untitled

I again braved the public bus system. It got me to thinking why I'm always so averse to taking public busses when on holiday. I guess the way my mind somehow sees it is, with a train or tram, there are tracks, so the train will only go along that route. Whereas a bus, the driver can drive the bus anywhere.

Untitled

My first stop of the day was Museum of World Religions. When I was searching for something different to do, this came up, and I thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Well, very first impressions of the exhibits, I thought it was just a very "surface job" of putting some basic information off of Wiki and then putting together a collection of artifacts of that religion as display. But. That was because those were the 2 religions I knew a bit more of, Christianity and Judaism, and a bit of Ancient Egypt. But then for the other religions that I didn't know anything about, it got more informative, and I even learnt some new tidbits.

Untitled

Some nifty installations too

Untitled

They did a floor diagram thing.

Untitled

So on Buddhaism, it said that "reincarnation" is like just a passage of life. The true target of Buddhaism is not reincarnate. It sounded funny to me because in many Cantonese way of expression, "reincarnate as something better" is the "game". So. It sort of made me think. To want to reincarnate as something better means you still have a want. To be able to achieve "not to reincarnate" would mean you are happy enough with life and there is nothing more for you to chase after.

Untitled

One of the weird parts was the Mayan religion. Why are there crosses and Mary? There was no explanation on the information card there. So I'm stumped. Best guess is they were putting together how the Mayan religion survived to the current day, so it's somewhat incorporated some other religions into it?

Untitled

Another part of the exhibitions that I thought was pretty good effort was putting together artifacts of different stages of life in the different religions. So when it's a new-born, there's a set of clothes or things the religions do, growing up, adulthood, marriage, sickness, death. The only weird thing was for marriage they only had an Indian dress (sarong?)

Untitled Untitled

Some nice patterns.

Untitled

Another part of the museum was some exhibit of oceans and nature and stuff. Here there are some swings. The waves are moving images, and there's this constant sound of waves being played.

Untitled

I did sit on a swing and let it slowly sway and I'd say it was pretty cool.

Untitled

I am part of the ocean. But the cool thing here is that the lights have a sequence of dimming/turning stronger and looking at the infinity mirror made it look like moving waves too!

Untitled

The last part is like those Japanese temples "wishing trees". Write whatever and then stick on these paper rocks.

Untitled

I braved the bus system again, but it was packed full. So I deviated from the suggested route, and got off the bus when it stopped at some underground station, and I changed my mode of transport. This Japanese place is well known for the thick cut sashimi. It wasn't bad, but I think I prefer a thin cut sashimi. Moreover, I dropped my power bank here and when I tried to get off my seat to pick it up (the staff did see but did not help me) and because of the legs of the chairs are weird (they're curved outwards or something) so I actually tripped and hit my left shoulder on a pillar. I seem to be OK now but I suspect tomorrow I'll be sore.

Untitled

Oh, the next place is super recommended! Miniatures Museum of Taiwan. I'll admit the very first part of the exhibits was a bit creepy (dolls, creepy looking dolls), but once it got to the models and miniature replica of stuff, it was an amazing visit!

UntitledUntitled

Admit, these are pretty creepy.

UntitledUntitled

But then these others are amazing!

Untitled Untitled
Untitled Untitled
Untitled Untitled

Christine (Phantom of the Opera) and Dinosaur Wonderland hahaha

Untitled Untitled
Untitled Untitled
Untitled Untitled
Untitled Untitled

Some random bookshop that was all frenchi-frenchie

Untitled

My favorite tea-house in Taiwan: smith&hsu. There used to be so many branches, now there's just this one. I tried a seasonal scone - Cinnamon flavored and it was pretty good.

Untitled

I paced myself for a bit. I did one last shopping and then returned to the hotel for a bit of a rest, then later at night I went to Liaoning Night Market, and immediately regretted it. Because.

Untitled

The PEOPLE! It was impossible to walk through. First I got a sweet potato balls snack thing. Was good but not worth it to be open-aired sardines. Then in some stall or another, I saw there was a queue, so it must be good, so I queued for the scallion pancake. I requested the extra option of salted egg sauce. I didn't feel like standing around these people to eat, so I made my way back (after diligently walking down and back up the row of stalls. Yes. The Night Market Experience. Done). Passed by a juice shop and got a cup of watermelon juice.

Untitled

I returned to my hostel, but since these scallion pancakes are usually very oily, and the added salty egg sauce must be double so, i did not want to eat in my room, so I went to the common room to eat it and type this up... when... when... whennnnnnnn..... THE BEST SURPRISE HAPPENED!

PUPPIES!!!!!!!!! The real Bosses of the place, I suppose LOL. Four Jack Russels and one Shiba Inu. The Shiba Inu, as Shibas go, was aloof. Oh but the Jacks were friendly. I couldn't help myself. I saw abandoned my unlocked iPad and phone and went to sit on the ground and frolicked with the Jacks LOL. I am so happy I went to the horrible night market. If not, I'd just stay holed in my room and not meet these beauties!

Untitled
elusivek: (Music Music Music!)
Day 2! I woke up bright and early, my usual 6.30am, but I don't have to walk any dogs so... my day started early. In hindsight, I should have taken it more easy, but it's neither here nor there.

Breakfast was at Shihai Soy Milk 四海豆漿大王.  I thought I'd get the egg roll and soy milk to eat there and the rice wrap to go. But when I finished the egg roll and the soy milk, I felt like I could still eat. So gobble up the rice wrap I did. Then I felt way too full haha.

Untitled

Made my way to the MRT to go up to Tamsui.

Untitled

But I made a stop at Beitou. It was quite a fun detour.

Untitled

I only heard of this place being mainly a hot springs destination, but I didn't know much apart from that.

Untitled

It had some nice spots. There was a public hot spring but you need to wear a swimsuit to get in there. I wasn't planning to get in the hot spring anyway. I knew I would be wearing those hiking boots that would be a pain to take off and put back on, so I didn't plan on actually going in there. (Later at the Museum, we had to take off our shoes, and when I put them back on, a seemingly useless strap on the back broke off. Maybe used to hang the shoes when not in use)

Untitled Untitled

Walked a little further on to the thermal valley. Stank like rotten eggs, but that's the sulphur.

Untitled

It was a quick visit though, it wasn't very big. Just walked around the smoking lake.

Untitled Untitled

It was like 429 degrees Celsius, so, I needed ice cream! Well, a popsicle.

Untitled

Along the way I read some signages and pieced together that this was some Japanese-occupied place (thus the very Japanese-style hot spring customs). And that Beitou became something like a Taiwan-Hollywood place. This bridge is one of those, apparently.

Untitled

There was a place called the Plum Garden that is a restored Japanese house. But there were no plums in there. There were bamboo trees though.

Untitled

And then the Beitou Museum. Again a Japanese style building so we had to take off our shoes. These symbols reminded me of the Pokémon symbols (game boy era Pokémon)

Untitled

A very interesting art installation. Words hung from somewhere make it look like the words are floating.

Untitled

Ah, and then the public library! I wanted to go see it. I didn't go in though.

Untitled

It was the first time I see a fountain sprout... take the form of a duck.

Untitled

Before the onwards journey to Tamsui, I swung by this.... tea place touting to be "real traditional flavors". I ordered a lemon and sour plum drink and it was surprising refreshing and delicious.

Untitled

Got to Tamsui and braved the bus system and Got to the Wuji Tianyuan Temple. Guess I got there in the wrong season. It would have been amazing to see in Spring when the Cherry trees blossom.

Untitled

Some people were doing some blessing stuff or maybe minor exorcising stuff or whatnot.

Untitled

Saw this little guy as I was leaving!

Untitled

There wasn't really much to do here though.

Untitled Untitled

As I was on the bus going back to Tamsui, it turned a corner and I saw this monster of a fluffy cat-doll. I didn't have time to shoot a photo so after I googled it... it is an elementary school! The kids here must be plagued by the stuff of nightmares!

Untitled

Back in Tamsui... Frankie Popsicle!

Untitled

Sorry my dear Frankie, I'm eating you!. It's a chocolate flavor, and as expectedly, it didn't really taste good. But that's all for the photo op!

Untitled

I'm not knowledgeable of puzzle brands, but I'd recommend Pinto anytime.

Untitled

Grumpy cat!

Untitled

So at around 4pm-ish, I decided to get a late lunch. This is a one-person yakiniku. Beef set, it was yum!

Untitled Untitled

A salad bar and soup and drinks are included with the set I ordered, so I ate up.

Untitled

I wanted to go back to the hostel by 6pm ish, but figured, the night is still young. I went to search for a Sport b. Store (a side collection or sub-brand to the Agnes b.) and Google Maps said it was somewhere. I went to that somewhere, but there was none. So I passed by the nearest night market...

Untitled

... and had some dessert! Black sesame dumplings!

Untitled Untitled

On the way back I went to one of those 20-min prescription eyeglasses shop. It's amazing how many things they check for, as shop. When I go for my yearly eye-check at my optical doctor's, she doesn't even check for half the things.

This is a very cute glasses. It's Mickey Mouse! The hands are hidden so you don't see them, but I'll know they're. There.

Untitled Untitled

I didn't take a photo, yet, but I actually bought 2 pairs of glasses. One from Owndays, a Taiwan brand of the same-day prescription glasses, and this Mickey one was from J!NS, a brand from Japan. And oh, I actually found a Sport b. In this shopping centre and got myself a very cute pair of the Sport b. Dino earrings! It's all packed up so I didn't take a photo yet. You'll see them sometime later!
elusivek: (plane rainbow)
Taipei, Taipei! Hello from Taipei!

I still went to work this morning, but left the office at 3pm-ish (how dare I LOL) so that I could get to the airport in time for my 5.30pm flight. So it happened that I got to see the sunset. The Check-In lady needed a bit more training. She looked at my passport left and right and then asked me, "what nationality is this?" And I had to say "Austria. The one in Europe. No kangaroos." She got the joke, but she couldn't read the German on the cover "Republik Osterreich". My dear, on the first page inside, the country is named in different languages.

Untitled Untitled

I got myself a window seat because I figured I'm traveling alone and this way I don't have to give way to anyone. However, I would come to regret a little, not for the window seat, but for my actual neighbour.

We flew over the HZM Bridge, and there's a part of it that's actually underwater (in a tunnel of course), and I got to get a shot of it.

Untitled Untitled

Flight was just 1 hour 20 minutes. When we landed, my immediate neighbour (seats of 3 and 3) was all latisses-faire and did not move. She wanted to let everyone out before she moved. Heck! I got myself a very front seat so that I could leave first! So I made to climb over her, and only then she said "okay, okay," and moved out. She had to take her large bag from the overhead.

Untitled

Ah, I did the Tourist TWD 5000 lucky draw thing and... NADA! No luck! I'm unhappy, LOL. The reason I wanted to come to Taipei was to have a go at that and get the 5000 (I'm speaking as if winning the TWD5000 is a given LOL). No free money, so I can only move on and take the MRT train to Taipei Main Station. Soon I got to my hostel. I'm pretty happy with my choice this time. It's a hostel, but I chose a private room. Toilet and shower included. Although there is no separation of the shower and the toilet, I'm not here to luxuriate in baths and showers. It gets the job done. The bed is upstairs and the downstairs bed-like place will be my bag dumping ground haha.

Untitled Untitled

If my Mom sees this she's gonna hate it. She hates these "unproper" bathrooms (no dedicated shower area) and all these stairs. But hey, hotels are unimaginably expensive in Taipei, I simply needed a roof over my head and a place to put my bags. I'll live.

Untitled

Since it was already 9pm-ish by the time I got to downtown, I first went to get a late night dinner at Shida Night Market. But is it because it's a Thursday night? It's... empty..... at least, my "usual dinner place" here was still open. 大台北 "Taipei Soy Sauce Braised Food" was still open. The staff have changed, and it was a bit funny. I remember before they used to call foreign strangers like "missy" or "mister". (In some other places like Bangkok I've heard a direct "lady"). But I guess they've changed somewhat. Now the catch phrase is "My Friend!" And for some reason I kind of got the feeling that I was in India.... LOL.

Untitled

Basically you choose whatever ingredient you want and they will cook it in their special soup base. I was eating solo so I had to control what I got. One of my Taiwan favorites is this "Pork Blood Cake " 豬血糕. Maybe it's really pork blood, and mixed with some glutinous rice flour to make a cake sort of thing.

Untitled Untitled

After this very satisfying dinner, I made my leisurely way back to the hostel. Stopped at a cosmetics shop and bought some beauty face masks for these 3 nights, and then near the hostel to the convenience store and bought my milk for tomorrow.

The plan tomorrow is to get some local breakfast, then go up to Dansui (Tamsui)... I'll probably stop at Beitou on the way for a walk around and look-see of the Hot Springs, then at Dansui I'm going to brave it and take a bus to some temple deep in the... non-city area. Wuji Tianyuan Temple.

That's the plan, but we'll see.
elusivek: (Music Music Music!)
So, I have successfully gone to Shenzhen and back. In a way, it was half-a-wasted trip. In the end I did get the signed merch, but I really made the trip for the artist meet and greet, which, didn't happen, because of time constraints.

Price for the ferry ticket was actually more expensive than that to Hong Kong. And the terrifying thing? I was sitting for a while and then noticed… there are no safety belts! OMG!
Untitled Untitled

Didn’t want to waste my phone battery (I knew I would need to use the maps and the subway app function), I brought a cheapo and light MP3 player. Also got quite a bit of reading done during the almost 80-minute ride.
Untitled

It’s indeed a nifty looking seaport! And I took a photo of the signage pointing to the cruise center, I was worried by the time I returned the sun would have set and I’d sort of get momentarily lost. It was moot though, on my way back the sun was still up.
Untitled Untitled

A bit of a blundering in the subway system and finally I reached the destination. Think of it like Comic Con or something, but this is Game Con or Game Show.
Untitled

Almost had some kind of trouble with the QR code ticket, but in the end I was able to go in.
Untitled Untitled

I spent like 20 minutes wandering for a bit.

But the real reason I was there was to see Masami Okui, an artist I’d been following since my high school years. Fan digression: Works of note would be opening track to the anime Slayers “Get Along” (duet with Megumi Hayashibara) but I guess her real shining glory was the opening track to Revolutionary Girl Utena, “輪舞 revolution”.

The promotional leaflets and info had harped about how you should only by “official merch” but I couldn’t find them. Anyway, when it was the mini concert time (14:20), I meandered to the stage area and saw people had bought merch, and those with merch had priority access to the stage seating… so I had to queue until all the priorities had gone in. Mini concert with 4 songs sung.
Untitled

And what do you know, the set list had exactly the 2 tracks I wrote of haha

輪舞 revolution
Blood Blade
Insanity
Get along

I’m not surprised about Blood Blade as it’s the theme song of a new-ish game. Maybe Insanity was a game song as well? This I’m not too sure.

After the concert and knowing of the merch available, I renewed my vigor to bloody hunt for the merch. And I found it. I had walked past that place. It was just a table. Not even a booth!

Meet and greet with signing for this artist was supposed to start at 15:20, so I was standing there waiting, when someone else asked and I, in my limited putonghua knowledge, sort of understood everything’s delayed. When I asked what time they thought this would delay to, they said 17:00. Well, shit. It takes one hour from the convention center to the ferry terminal, and I have to leave at 17:00.

Anyway, after grumbling in my limited putonghua with the staff, she said she’d help me take the merch to sign. Which is grand. But. THE POINT WAS TO GO MEET HER! But I really couldn’t help it. 18:30 was the last ferry of the day, and I had to take that ferry back. If I took the train it’d be like 3 hours and my car was parked in Macau side ferry terminal, not at the Chinese border, so I’d have to make another trip to go get the car.
Untitled

Of course I made a token “thank you to the kind staff but I couldn’t meet you!” grumble on twitter and the artist replied “we’ll meet next time”. Excuse my Japanese if anything’s grammatically wrong.
Untitled

But still, because the staff had to wait until the artist was in the waiting lounge or whatever, so it was pretty close to 17:00 when I actually left. I had to run for it, some guy saw me running near the exit of the subway and wanted to hitch me a ride on his... moped? Scooter? But I waved him away and ran, and I cut it pretty close, when the guy at the immigration was asking me a lot of questions. “Your passport is from Austria. So after Macau, are you going back to Austria? No? Are you coming back to Shenzhen? No? I don’t understand?” And I had to give him my Macau resident card to make him understand that I live in Macau (which I had told him already, but he didn’t seem to believe me).
Untitled

This ferry had safety belts and I put them on. More reading, and last two nice sunset views.

This is that “Famed” HZM Bridge (Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge for those who are interested)

The lights in the far left side is probably Macau, I think.

 Budget airline woes, LOL.

Online check in was live for my flight tomorrow to Tokyo. It's a budget airline so I didn't pre-buy a specific seat. But I thought it would be like other airlines, that upon online check in, I can choose specific "free area" seats, and that since I bought 2 tickets together, that even if it's auto-seating we would be seated together.

Noooooppppeeee. We were separated, and we each were assigned to a window seat. I got miffed, so decided to pay for the seat. And since I'm paying for a seat, I'm not going to pay for any normal seat. I paid for the up front "sweet seats". I chose row 3. We each on the aisle seat next to each other. Seems like nobody chose those seats. Goooood. Row 3 was a strategy as well. The likelihood of Chinese or Japanese choosing Row 4 seats is lower. (Four sounds like death LOL). So chance of being kicked behind is lower. Since it's a redeye flight, I plan to sleep all the way.

The exit row seats were available to choose, but I figured, exit row seats are bestowed upon, not paid for, and besides, I was upgraded to an exit row seat once. Yes, excellent leg room. But I also did not want to part with my handbag, which, there was no seat in front of me to put my bag underneath it, so had to part with it and it went up to the compartment. I did not like it.

I'm counting on my friend who promised she would take care of the cash, since she has a Japanese Yen account. I took all my leftover JPYs and my Boss had some coins lying around on his desk for 3 years, so I took them. (I told him I was taking them. He was fine. It was less than JPY 2000 anyway). Besides, even if cash is king in Japan, I can still use my credit card in the city, and my Suica should have some cash in it too (unless it goes out of order).

I was going to take my old point-and-shoot Canon, but then as I was looking for something else, I found my "newer than the point-and-shoot, older-than-my-out-of-order-panasonic" Canon DSLR, so decided I would be taking that. The default zoom lens that came with the camera when I bought it is dead (auto focus went wonky), though I do have a spare prime lens (50mm or 55mm, I forgot)... but I think I may go buy a new basic zoom lens in Japan (just a regular 18-55mm). The camera body (EOS 1000D) is also old and parts of the soft plasticy parts (the USB slot cover) is crumbling... argh should I buy a brand new camera then? Again, abstain!

And that's that! I'll miss the puppies probably by the second morning, find out I packed clothes that are too warm (the temperatures look cold, but I don't know). Which. I guess I better go pack now.

 OMG! LOL!

A friend was interested in joining my London trip but is still on the fence undecided because of her passport issues and also I didn't score the cheap tickets. I did some "flexible dates searching" and managed to find days with a better and more reasonable price on BA. I wanted to buy the tickets already, but since this friend is a scaredy cat kind of gal, she wants to do things together, so I placed a deposit to hold the price. I told her my deadline is tomorrow and no matter what I will issue the tickets tomorrow. If she decides later than me to go then we can get her ticket separately. I kind of think she'll get a better price. After I placed the deposit for the price freeze, I saw Cathay Pacific had an even lower price (WTF!) but with 1 day difference.

Anyway, the price freeze will end tomorrow and I'll issue the ticket no matter what. I am not letting another person's indecisiveness affect my enjoyment of my plans.

The only thing is that if she goes, then I've booked us an apartment studio type accommodation which is definitely better than the single room I got for myself. I kind of think I'm getting old so not feeling up to staying in dorms nor rooms with a shared bathrooms. I managed to find something with a private bathroom but I can see from the photos it's gonna be a tight fit. These two places have a free cancellation until around a week before my check in date, so I've got time to freely cancel either one.

I already got a travel pillow, it's a bit fancy that I don't have to blow it up. There's an inlaid pump thingamajig that I can pump it up by pumping it. I also got a cup sized water boiler (size of a medium sized tumbler). Ever since I saw that news article about people boiling their period-stained panties IN THE KETTLE (amongst other "Rumours-not-rumours" about hotel amenities) I was looking for a travel kettle. But I thought them all to big. I found this tumbler sized one that was just right, boils just one mug of water.

I'm still on the fence on whether to go see Oxford or Cambridge but I've already decided on one of my day trips out of London - Hastings!

The London planning has been placed on a temporary slow-down because...

Out of nowhere, I'm going to Tokyo in March LOL. My bestie scored some event ticket of whoever (band or artist or idol) she likes, so she was going there anyway. We also had a standing agreement that... we'd visit Tokyo Disneyland on the big anniversaries because we are the same age as Tokyo Disneyland... LOL So we're celebrating our 40th with Tokyo Disneyland's 40th.... and so... it was agreed, and flight tickets were bought and stuff... LOL. Split second decisions are horrible. I didn't even ask my Boss for holidays yet, but then with the minimal time difference I assume I'll just be on call and "working from out of office location" anyway, so probably I don't even need to take time off.

In my last trip to Tokyo I learned of a shop called Kakimori that sells stationary, fountain pens, and ink and such stuff. It had a subsidiary called the Ink Stand and held workshops where you can mix your own colors to make a new one-of-a-kind fountain pen ink. I wanted to do that last time already but didn't have the time. I was thinking of doing that this time, but then found out due to the whole coronavirus thing they've downsized, and Ink Stand is only opened on weekends and public holidays. Our entire trip was going to be on weekdays because my bestie has to give classes on the weekends... so I thought it was a lost cause.

Then my bestie reminded me: the day her event is held is a public holiday, so it's as good a chance as any other for us to do our separate entertainment on that day. She's going to her event at noon-ish, and I'll see later in February when they update their schedule and confirm if they are indeed open on that day and I'll book myself in for 11:00am or noon as well. We'd have a day in Tokyo Disneyland, and maybe get the afternoon or night supplement for Tokyo Disney Sea (I hear differing opinions about that, ranging from "It's boring and has nothing to really see, to, it's very nice and the parade is spectacular") depending on the time and the costs.

Then we will try to see things out of Tokyo because we're both pretty bored of Tokyo already. The prices of the flight tickets were so high (and the schedules so bad!), we couldn't justify the cost of returning from another airport (Osaka, to visit Kyoto on the way) so my friend will look for interesting places outside of Tokyo, possibly similar to Kyoto, or something more nature-y.

oh, oh, aaaaaaannnnnddddd! During the pandemic times, China sort of semi-cancelled their visitor visa things? Since they've reopened their borders, I thought to get my China visa now in case I need to make any ad hoc trips up, and decided to fill in the form for a "24-month visa". It was the standard for any Macau citizen with a permanent resident status. Then my colleague called to ask and found out they now have a "36-month visa" (for the price of a 1-month visa) for Macau permanent residents whose residency card and passport have that validity. My residency card expires in 2029 and my Austrian passport expires in 2027, so I could get the 36 month visa... if they are willing to let me amend the application when I submit it on Friday. (I couldn't amend it on the web application because I've already "submitted" it.) The thing is, on the form, it isn't a tick-box choice of "1-year, 2-year, or 3-year" visa, it was an open space of "your desired number of months"... guess they thought that out so that they can make ad hoc changes and not have to worry about the application form.

Revenge traveling is the word here LOL.

I suddenly have a trip to Hong Kong on Wednesday LOL. So what happened is my bestie was going to Hong Kong for two days with her sister to visit family and such. They were going to see the Yayoi Kusama exhibition with her sister's friend, but the friend has now suddenly stood them up, so they had an extra ticket. My friend decided to ask me, and I figured, that could be a good enough reason for a quick day trip to Hong Kong.

I could take the chance to check out how the immigration runs and so when my Dad eventually has to go to Hong Kong to make his proof of life thing at the Austrian Consulate, then I can help him out if there's any big change.

But, Yayoi Kusama, I'm actually not a big fan. I have a slight trypophobia so ugh. It's nothing bad. I just get goosebumps, is all, but yeah.

I'm also crossing my fingers as i saw an add about some discounted flight tickets, and if I'm lucky and manage to book that fare class, then it's less than $2500 HKD (USD320 or GBP260) for a round trip Hong Kong > London > Hong Kong and it would be a great chance for me to deal with those old GBP money notes I have. I've already held a room (free cancellation before April) and if it all works out, then I'll have another trip in the calendar.

Reserve one day for the money change, and maybe if I figure out with Vodafone if I can do something about my Boss' phone plan without him there, then that's that. And the rest? It's the Kew Gardens (that I really wanted to go in my last trip to London.... 2016 or so?) I'm eyeing this time, and I figured I might as well go on that Harry Potter studio tour thingamajig. And then... No idea. Might go away from London? Don't know what else there is to visit. Need to go read some tour books now.

That's if I get that promo price only! The room's really steep.

I'm dreaming.... about my next trip, if there will ever be a next trip.

I've decided!

My travel buddies and I originally had a plan to visit Russia (Moscow and St Petersburg and one remote area I forgot the name of) in September. With the COVID-19 situation as it is, I'm banking it's not gonna happen. And IF (and it's one big IF) things resolve in Autumn, I refuse to go to Russia in Winter. So, it's definitely not gonna happen this year.

But anyway.

After much thinking and dreaming and day-dreaming and whatnot, I've decided, if I live to see the borders re-opening and all that, the first place I'd like to travel to is Fukuoka, Japan. Again.

I was thinking of Taipei and Bangkok, but after a lot of brainstorming, I've decided for neither. It's gonna be Fukuoka. Despite I've just been there in 2018, or I should say, it is BECAUSE I was just there in 2018. I travelled with 2 friends, and one of them is a super chill, super slow person.

I went to Tokyo with her a couple years back and in those 5 days, we did almost nothing. We had an overnight in Hakone and that ended up as "Tokyo > Hakone > long bus trip to the Ryokan > stay in the Ryokan > Tokyo".

The following year, I went with another friend to Tokyo and I suggested Hakone again and what happened?

Tokyo > Hakone > explore a lot of Hakone > go up the mountain by rope way/cable car > reach the f*cking cold snow mountain (we were in summer wear) > descent the mountain by rope way/cable car > get on a pirate ship > visit some spooky mountains/shrines > get to Ryokan > use Ryokan facilities to the max > stay the night > morning explore and street food and lunch > Tokyo.

Anyway, I was a little miffed that in my trip to Fukuoka, we passed by a place called Yufuin. My internal mind-target was to walk to the end of the route and reach some lake or another. This friend, once again, reached *her* intended destination of some Swiss roll cake shop and after we got the Swiss roll, decided she was "tired" and wanted to make the return trip.

I'd like to stay at a better Ryokan at Beau as well. We stayed at a shitty place that time because everyone dragged their asses and did not book for anything until the last minute.

And then there's also Mojiko. We went to Mojiko, and *her* intended destination was to the harbor side of Mojiko, cross over for seafood, then cross back and to the train station. What about the other side, the retro side? I asked, and she said "it's late and she's tired" and we went on the train back. WTF?

Once again, I'm of the work hard, play harder group. I paid for the trip. You bet I'd wring myself dry in terms of visiting everything despite getting tired and half dead. I.WILL.SEE.EVERYTHING.

That day, after returning to Fukuoka from Mojiko, they were all "so tired" and stayed in the hotel. I refused and went out and about exploring the area around the station (I forget, Hakata, I think). I found a delicious soft ice cream place. Yummy. Yakiniku. Yummy!

oh, and around the last day, there was "nowhere else to go" so she decided it's just to stay at the hotel. Nooooooooooo. I could have gone to Dazaifu! But they were like "we shouldn't get separated!" "There's not enough time!" I said as long as I leave early, then there's enough time for everything. She goes "nothing is open that early anyway!" And laughed when I said I could simply go take a walk in a (and any one) park.

Have to "play nice" and not start a fight, but I really don't want to go on another trip with her. I kind of get the impression that she got the memo too, and recently (before COVID19) I see her going on trips with other people. OH! But this girl I'm complaining about is not in my "Travel Buddies" group as I mentioned in the beginning (the group for Russia). My "Travel Buddies", despite having some bumpy spots, are overall a smooth group to travel with.

But yes, Fukuoka is my first destination choice once the borders open again. *Dreams on*

Right. The Wuhan Pneumonia Scare. The Coronavirus. Whheee!

Not really as scary as the media has made it to be, at least, in my circles. It’s caused a bit of inconvenience in that face masks and hand sanitizers are like gold currently, prices are skyrocketing.

I always had a stash of face masks anyway so it’s fine. I don’t use hand sanitizers. I prefer to outright wash my hands.

And I was gutsy enough to travel out to Hong Kong yesterday as well! My good friends C and P have our annual “Third-day of Chinese New Year Lunch” (Chinese custom: don’t visit people on the third day of CNY as you’re going to argue 赤口) in Disneyland this time. I thought it was simply because of the character dim sum, and C thought it was because it’s “the year of the Rat” (so, Mickey Mouse), and well, P says it was simply to eat.

No surprises though, the food sucked LOL (as one would imagine these cutesy foods would taste). Though they didn’t even actually looked nice... *shrugs*

The park (Disneyland) was actually closed yesterday! We simply just went there for lunch. Shopped a bit at the gift shop (got a nifty knit cardigan-poncho thing for half price!) Then, back to Macau. Immigration was clunky with the extra health check point. But otherwise it wasn’t too bad.

Can’t believe I actually went to HK Disney twice this month. Took mom (and her friend) there last week to have a walk around and this time for lunch.

So recently, with all that riot in Hong Kong, it was advised best not to go there.

But, I wanted to go get new curtains from Ikea, and I felt like exploring a bit.
So I went to Guangzhou, China.

Alone.

A very gutsy thing to do as, I was brought up with the background saying of "China is dangerous! They rob you in broad daylight!" and things like that. But, I did a bit of research, and figured out Guangzhou could be like Hong Kong. It's well connected with subways and all that. Easy.

98B5AE1C-E034-4AF3-9EEE-A7EE3C7E3B85.JPG

The first thing to do is to actually step out there. I used the app Trip.com to purchase a round trip train ticket from Zhuhai to Guangzhou and back. As I use the passport lane, I left Macau rather early to beat the queue at immigration. Turns out pre-8:00am is a slow time. Then I went to the train station to pick up my tickets, long queue again. When it was my turn, the lady said "no tickets, just use your passport," and I was instantly suspicious. It's China. They can very well say this at the ticket counter, and then say something else like "no ticket no boarding" at the check in gate. But, all was well, they let me through.

02CE7F52-2D86-4CB3-A9BB-7DDA06715AFA.JPG

An hour later, I arrived at Guangzhou South Railway Station. I still had to take the subway up to downtown, I already had a local top-up money card sort of thing (from last year), so it was easy peasy. I wanted to go to Ikea but I knew I would buy something heavy, and I just noticed I forgot to bring my shopping bag with wheels, so I didn't want to lug stuff around. I swapped my plan around and headed to a place called the K11.

6C5C91AE-7BCF-444E-B2C9-55DB23E83779.JPG

K11 is sort of a mall with Art as focus, seems like it's a chain of sorts as well, as I know there's a K11 in Hong Kong. No, I think there's 2 K11 in Hong Kong. Whatever. Weird art installations and all that abound in this place. My second reason to swap this around is because... I needed the toilet, and China is notorious about horrible toilets. And to my luck, this place was pretty empty and had clean toilets. Good call!

And I wanted to wandar around this bookshop. I've sworn off buying DTBs but nothing is going to stop me from checking out a bookshop. This is a very interesting one. It also has an artist corner "Blank Page" where there are easles for rent (I think?).

Time to get some lunch. I walked around the restaurants street and couldn't find anything that pops out until I saw this Vietnamese place.

9DB555F1-625F-4782-B576-3C071CD7F2BB.JPG

The internet was saying this is a hit store. It's mainly for its cakes and patisserie but I was feeling like having an ice cream so I got the soft serve. Should have chosen a cake instead.

B22014D7-13A8-4205-AB95-07D1478FCCDA.JPG

Made my way to Ikea to get my curtains. I got them and as Ikeas are huge I had to wandar around. Look at these cute piggies! I did not bring them home though. It was early and I contemplated heading back, but I couldn't change my train tickets, so I meandered around and went to one more mall.

Parc Central is a huge (though I guess small by China standards) mall. Again, malls, retail shops and such. I could almost convince myself I was in Hong Kong. There is a huge Apple store as well, but I've always wondered in Apple actually sells in China, as they have all those Samsungs andGalaxies and Huaweis and Redmis... The Popcorn was super expensive, saying it was all hand-made. So I chose the weirdest sounding flavor (raspberry and hazelnut). It tasted a little weird at first because of the sour from the raspberry, but the taste does grow on you. Though RMB$90 for a small bag is like ridiculously expensive. I eventually got tired of walking around lugging a heavy bag of curtains, and not daring to shop for anything more since I didn't have my shopping trolley, so I went to have a bite to eat then made my way back to Guangzhou South Railway Station.

77815550-3D6D-437F-8369-A86B03E6D100.JPG

A bit of a blunder on my way back though. I went on the same subway line and I went on coming in, and thought it would go on straight down to where I needed to go. However, at a certain station, the subway went back the way it came from. So I had to get off it, and take the next one. Again, at that one station, it started going backwards again. After some serious listening to the overhead announcement did I find out that I had to get off at that stop then change the train which is still the same train line, but just another train on another platform (WTF?). Anyway, I finally managed to get to where I needed to go, interchange and arrive at Guangzhou South with enough time to spare.

Starbucks China has different merchandise from Starbucks Hong Kong and Macau. And the Starbucks merchandise are SO CUTE! But I didn't buy any of those. I just got a Peach Fizz something and waited for my train.

And that was my quick getaway to Guangzhou China.

Taipei

Sunday, 20 January 2019 13:06
elusivek: (Default)
Actually, I’m on a short getaway again. And once again, it’s Taipei. With a friend. I have only a few friends, so I don’t really have much choice when it comes to travel buddies. And no, I’m not complaining. I dare not complain about it. I came in with my eyes wide open.

It’s just that every time I go on a trip with this particular friend, I inevitable need another solo trip to calm me down. I think I have a slight OCD problem.

I don’t mind changing plans. If we decided to go to the beach, but then on-day find out it’s raining or way too hot, I’m ok with changing the plan.

What I’m not ok with is, we made plans to go to the beach. It involves making a long complicated trip. We have embarked on said complicated trip. And then out on a whim, a change of mind. “Let’s go there instead.” No. No. And noooooo. It’s not even on the way or anywhere nearby the beach. My brain can’t process that. She’s talking because she can’t stand the quiet, but it’s only quiet because of herself. I try to make conversation but then she’s playing a game on her phone or reading some online novel. Well, so what do I do? It’s childish, but I do the same - when she’s done and wanting to talk again. Petty yes, rewarding too, if I’m feeling vindictive enough.

Well, we didn’t really go to any beach. I’m just putting it in a less complicated way for easy understanding.

And all that mumbling. If you have something to say, say it! Open your mouth! Don’t talk with your mouth closed!

And the half arsed research. We went to some city outskirts place. After arriving, I found out my friend had no idea what to do and where to go. Then she just whips out her phone and says “we can walk 50 meters from here to the bus stop and take the bus to tutututu!”

The tutututu above is not et cetera. It’s really what she said. Meaning she said nothing. 50 meters which direction go which bus stop? Take the bus take what bus? With destination of where? Nothing.

But calm down, kat, you knew this was going to happen, when she said she would plan it all, so calm down.

Annoyed, I whipped out my phone and map and decided to go to one park. We started walking. Entry to the park involved a long long flight of stairs. She got spooked and wanted to scale around the block to see if there is a non-stairs way up there. We walked a good hour to reach a temple up there. When all was done and looked, she started up and said “let’s go to this place, but I need to ask how to get there.” Ok, I can work with that, because that is a clear, concise endpoint. So we make our way back, but I went down the stairs that she refused to go up. In less than 5 minutes we were down. Yes. Almost an hour going up and less than 5 minutes going down. All because of stairs.

Anyway, we made our way to that one place she wanted to go, so working on that, I worked out a simple itinerary of seeing that place then stopping at a market place for lunch that’s on the way. She agreed. Then she went and bought hotdog snacks. Giving me one. Sorry. I refused. Yes I know she’s being nice. But I’m going to have lunch right after, and everyone knows I don’t snack before a main meal. Besides, she didn’t ask if I wanted one before she ordered. So no. I refused it. Sorry for my lack of tact.

All these silly human interactions aside, it’s been great. I’ve had some really great food, and even got to see a couple of cool temples, and of course it being Taipei, night markets and really good food!

I need to find a mall or something to hide now as there is now a slight drizzle. Need to kill time around 5-ish then we have to make our way back to the hotel then the airport.
elusivek: (Default)
Sorry for not interacting much. Life has been busy after my office move. I do need to commute by bus but it’s like a 6-minute ride across the bridge to get to the island and then I’m back to walking, so I don’t really have much time to check on messages and stuff on the bus.

Then our HR had a weird policy change. Without going into actual details, the gist of it is, we get to work less hours and we get more holidays. Like yesterday, All Soul’s Day, it’s a public holiday but not a statutory holiday. We used to only get statutory holidays (10-days yearly), but the policy change now lets us have all the public holidays (20-days yearly). And we now work 45-hour weeks instead of 50. It’s weird.

So with this long weekend, I’m off to China, went on that super rail thing and am in a place called Chaozhou 潮州. They say that’s where a lot of the good food is. So far I’m not disappointed. Last night we had 2 dinners LOL. First to a beef hot pot place (had a weird dish, don’t even know which part of the beef it was), and then went for a second dinner of raw marinated fish.

Dinner #1

Dinner #2

The hotel I’m staying at is right in front of the West Lake 西湖 so I can do a bit of walking and looking around too.

The only down side is I bought a China SIM card and it worked for a few hours, but then it didn’t work, darn it. I’m going back to that shop when I’m back in town to complain about that but it’s China, I think they’re gonna play some kind of hooky on me.

Anyway, that aside, it’s gonna be more food today!

New scam?

I sneaked out of the office today to go to the bank to pick up my Yen notes that I reserved. On my way there, an either Indian (?) or Pakistani (?) (I'm thinking more Indian) guy called "Ma'am! Ma'am! do you speak English?"

I thought he was a tourist and was lost and needed help. So I just went ahead and "yeah, how can I help you?"

And he goes, "Ma'am, you have a lucky face. You are going to be so lucky next month. You have such a lucky face. In fact, you are going to have 3 lucky incidents next month....."

My mind was racing and going 140 miles per second and I was filling the rest of his speech in my head. "If you want to know what this good luck is then you have to pay me xxxx" or something along those lines.

Then, in that one nano-second after that thought raced through my mind, I got mad. So mad! I just waved my arm and said "oh don't waste my time!" and turned around and walked off.

The nerve!

Anyway!

Tokyo!

I'm a long-time fan of a Japanese singer. At one point in time, I braved the language barriers and somehow actually managed to join her fanclub, and she even wrote me a letter. I still like her, though my passion has dwindled off. I managed to get to Taipei to see her second "world tour" as well. For her first "world tour", I actually missed it as I didn't know about it, despite her having a stop in Hong Kong (on the same day as the Kelly Clarkson concert in Macau, which I had bought tickets for early on) (though if I had known of the Japanese singer's concert in Hong Kong, I would have ditched Kelly Clarkson for her).

Anyway, said singer is going to hold a live this year (21-Oct) and the word going around is that this is her last solo live and she's going to focus solely on her group project (JAM Project).

On a Facebook fan group one of the fans there said he was going to get tickets through an intermediary buyer. Due to some previous conversation exchange, he agreed to help me get a ticket as well. However, after the tickets were successfully bought (I hear you had to win a lottery to be able to buy them, or something), the guy stopped contacting. I didn't even pay him yet. I'm not pushing to pay him, but after he said the tickets were bought, I did go and arrange my flight tickets and hotel. LOL.

I tried to get him to talk like "so how do you want me to pay you? how much? (due to the intermediary buyer costs as well)

Well, if in the end the guy pulls a no-show on me that's fine. It's Tokyo. I'm bound to be able to find some other entertainment. It'll be a pity to miss her last solo live concert, but I'll live. And if the guy does show up with the ticket, then I'll pay him and we'll go see the concert. I'm cool either way.

My flight tickets were redeemed from my flight miles (so I only paid like some USD$40 for tax only) and since I'm travelling alone I'm staying at a hostel in a female only dorm. I'm going to hunt for nice stationary, and I know there is a fountain pen and ink shop that lets you mix your own ink color!

It's gonna be fun! I need to survive these 2 weeks first!

Well, we’re approaching the end of my trip to Portugal, we’re now in Lisbon, staying at my suburb apartment. I remember the apartment being larger but maybe that’s because I was a kid and smaller back then, so I found the apartment larger?

Some mishaps already. One of my friends opened the store(?)(blinds?) a little too harsh and broke it, now the store is rolled all the way up and we couldn’t let it down now. Mom is having a fit over in Macau as she’s worried about her furniture getting the brunt of the sun.

I’m not trying to point fingers but my friend could have said something. Even if it’s not apologising, I mean she can say “oops, that was me,” it’s not like I’m gonna throw her out. I know the stuff around the apartment are old now and easily breakable, so yeah.

I know suspect which of them because the other one was sleeping at the time that I heard a bang or crash of some kind. I regret not running out to the living room to ask what’s up, but what’s done is done... And this friend that I’m suspecting, she made a big show of saying “my new baggage is small so I couldn’t bring anything extra back” at first (as the only “form of payment” my mom wants from us for using the apartment is to bring some adult diapers from there), but suddenly, now she’s all “we can all each take 2 packs so you have 6 packs”

Meh.

Hello!

After some 24+ hours of traveling, I’m in Porto!

Had a +/-12-hour flight from Hong Kong to Amsterdam, and after 2-hours, a second 2-hour flight from Amsterdam to Porto. The coolest thing was, there is a check in service in Macau that we can check in our bags from Macau, and then not care a thing about them and then see them in Porto. The attendant said it’s a service only available with Air France and KLM.

Flight itself was ok. Pleasant. Couldn’t sleep much on the plane. The movies were a letdown though. Before the flight, I checked the movie catalogue and there was quite a few movies I wanted to watch, but in the end, in-flight, I found only 1.

It’s a Japanese movie called “Color me true” (今夜、ロマンス劇場で). It wasn’t what I expected to be, but still good. I thought it would be a gag style comedy but it was actually touching.

Anyway, in this hotel, I just slept a couple hours and now am sitting in the toilet. Despite the doctor cleared me to fly, I’m actually still not 100% well. I guess because if the flight (air pressure change and all that), and my intestines being super sensitive and irritable lately, I’ve now got quite a gassy tummy. Doctors say it’s all fine (yes, I went to 2 doctors) so I guess I just have to deal with it.

Friends are still snoozing, they can sleep! Well, I’m gonna wake them up a little after 7am as they requested.

Até a próxima!
