Work colleagues
Tuesday, 18 February 2020 10:54I "have" a staff that I never really wanted. I hate to play into stereotypes, but sometimes... it's people reinforcing the stereotypes.
I was referred to this lady of a certain nationality. Once I heard of the situation, I didn't want to hire her, even without interviewing her. After interviewing her, it only reinforced my feeling of despair. I really didn't want to hire her. But I was forced to hire her.
I knew that her kind would be stubborn, very hard to work with, abuse kindness and autonomy, and just all in all annoy me.
So I had to hire her. I already give her the least amount of work. I let her have a certain amount of autonomy to run an office. This is growing project and they didn't even have company desktop phones yet. There was only one normal analogue land line at her desk.
Oh, the desk was another issue too. That office doesn't have a real reception, but I had said she had to be seated somewhere near the entrance. She refused, saying there's no windows and no sunlight and all, and decided on her own to seat inside in the second room.
When the coronavirus outbreak happened, I said everyone going into the office had to have their temperatures taken. Any normal person would understand that the temperature taking should take place at the entrance.
She set up her station at her desk. When people had to walk all the way through the first room and contaminate everything then into the second room, THEN she took the temperature. This is her genius.
Anyway, on the phone lines, we have just started to install the company desktop phones recently. I heard that that office had all completed already. So I was just wondering, "What about her? Nobody asked me about assigning an extension number?" IT replies "oh no, she said no need, she doesn't know." Now I'm wondering already. For every single thing, she would ask me what to do. (Say like, to switch off an air-con), so I was wondering why she wouldn't ask about that, if that is the case. First she says the phones were installed when she was not there. Then she says she has a phone anyway. Then she blames IT that they are still testing. But I know that IT is not testing, because IT has marked that office as completed. I do not think IT would be so stupid as to mark the office as completed if they were still on testing stage. Then she comes around with "Am I supposed to have one?"
God save me from this woman. I know I am working with a lot of bias to start with, but I can't help it. She called a few times to change her starting date. When finally she agreed on a starting date, she came to work on the first day, then said she will be off on 2nd day of work because she had a doctor's appointment. WTF? Then why didn't you move your starting date one more week or 3 more days?
Her English sucks, we tried to have her take minutes for meetings, but she can't really do it. She claims to speak Chinese but she can't write (which okay, me too) but still, if she goes to a meeting in Chinese she can still supposedly understand the meeting and write the minutes as well? Nope. No can do.
Because she doesn't read or write Chinese, I cannot leave any of the government related submissions work to her, because despite the official languages here being Portuguese and Chinese, nobody really knows Portuguese here, and she doesn't know written Chinese.
I have another girl in another office (but the same company), and supposedly, these 2 ladies have the same role in each office. This other girl is a lot more helpful. Anticipates things that needs to be done, and stands her ground with stupid or tricky colleagues. So the two of them are supposed to work together. This second girl tries to work with the first one but the first one thinks she is better and above her. (I say first and second, but in reality this "second" girl was hired before this one that I'm complaining about). So this one that I complain about would always ask me about things, and I always tell her to "Ask the other girl, you need to work with her", but every new issue, she will come to ask me again.
She just plays right into the stereotype of "her people", and in a way I am more disappointed than anything. Because you see, if she had applied the job directly, she would not have gotten the job. She had someone from high saying i had to hire her. And she knows for a fact that with her situation, she wouldn't normally find a job when Chinese is so predominantly heavy in the city. I originally tried to run that by my boss to say it's a waste of resources, especially now that we are on the pre-opening stage, but then my boss just said "you deal with it" (F you too, boss). One would think, if you managed to find a job because someone helped you, you would be grateful and try your best? It doesn't seem so.
She's here for maybe around 6 months or more and I can't deal with it anymore. No more!!!!!!!!!
