I did not realise it was Easter weekend last week, so I got a pleasant surprise of a long weekend. In Macau we get Good Friday off, but of course my Mom's brain is still in her civil servant and Portuguese rule era and kept asking me why I'm not off on Easter Monday. Because it's not a mandated public holiday.

"But banks are closed!" she counters.

"And I do not work in a bank."

For the record, banks in Macau are closed because it's a public holiday in Hong Kong, and Macau banks are reliant on Hong Kong banks.

Did I get much done over the long weekend? Not much. Sorted out some ebooks into my Kobo, got some running done, and of course worked over the holidays from home when needed. Such is life, and I'm happy with it.

It's mid-April already so that means my upcoming trip to Tokyo is fast approaching. I forgot to book the Pokemon cafe thing in Tokyo. I mean, I remembered to try the day before (they have a book 30 days in advance thing) and I tried their system just to see how it works, and in 6 minutes, it was fully. booked. No problem, that was trial day only. The next day (the day I really meant to book), ... I forgot about it LOL.

I've read that people would go there on-day and try their luck for ad hoc cancellations, but I don't really do that. If it's a walk in type of restaurant, I'd walk in. If it's a reservation only type of place, I'd only go if I had a reservation. I won't ever try my luck with on day cancellations.

That said, that would make my schedule more flexible. I might move things around as I planned.

Then end of May I'm going to Singapore again. It's about time someone goes check the condition of that office we have. It's all above board and proper, I've done all my paperwork already, besides, I'm cheap when I travel, even when it's a work travel, I guess no one complains when I'm the one doing the traveling.

No trip in June anymore, then July and August... the parents are flying to Europe again. So, FINALLY, I can cook for myself, set my own schedule, and do whatever I want. The only thing is I will have to do the same thing I always do when they're traveling: Take Fridays off so someone is home to check on the maid.

September will probably be no trip, there's a possibility my Sis will be accompanying my aunt and cousin to Portugal because of reasons. October I have my Taiwan half marathon thing, and December I have my Tokyo Kawaguchi Lake run (a 17km segment under the Fuji Marathon). There's some not-yet serious planning on a November trip to Qingdao China.

The Boss called me late last night: he lost something, and he thinks he left it on the plane! He's telling me almost 12 hours after the fact. It was midnight anyway, so I let it sit until this morning.

I called the airline customer service, got through the entire conversation in Mandarin. Lady said I should call another number (she gave me the number) later in the afternoon.

Did that, another big conversation in Mandarin, and booyah! They got my Boss' item. Boss wanted to ask them to courier it out, but they needed for him to show with ID to pick up the thing.

Anyway, I was riding a kind of high today because, I managed to resolve a Boss issue all in Mandarin. I'll admit I was feeling pretty cool and pretty good.

Ugh. Today was an annoying day! So back in 2023 or 2024, a new driving license scheme was implemented.

It was something like a "reciprocal acceptance of driving license", where China would recognize Macau and Hong Kong driving license, and vice versa. One would still need to go "convert" or "dub" a driving license, but there will be no need to do any sort of exam.

All the while, I was very interested in doing that. I read and I read the instructions. I saw other people doing that. Finally I decided to take the plunge and go today.

Requirements:
1. Have a Permanent Resident Status in Macau. Check
FAQ: what about for non-Chinese nationals? It is fine, as long as you have a Permanent Resident Status in Macau.

2. Need to register a Chinese phone number. Check.

3. Need to do a body and eyesight check, available to do in a "multimedia box" thingamajig. Check.

4. Recent 6-month photos. Check.

5. Pay. Check.

So I made the appointment, took some time out of the office, braved the HZM Bridge Border, walked over to the China side traffic department... IN THE SUN.

UntitledUntitled

It was all for nothing. I went there, went into the machine, did the test (eye test had to be redone), got my photos taken, which looked not bad, really, and then I went to submit my documents.

Can't do it.

I don't have a Chinese name registered on my Macau Resident Card.

I kept asking, nowhere in their instructions was it said that I need a Chinese name.

"Oh, but you're in China, so you need a Chinese name."

Okay, fair enough, but still, there was absolutely no mention of the need of a Chinese name, not on the website details, not in the FAQ, not in message boards. I even asked what about the foreigners? And they replied foreigners would go to institutions to get a Chinese name registered (they get a certificate that says John Smith is 士約翰) and with that, need to re-do the body check in a hospital.

So what about the money I paid already?

You can try to call the company to get it refunded.

What the bejeeeeezus!

For once in my life I was so careful, did so much research, read all those pages, heck I read in simplified Chinese (which always gives me a headache), and still I couldn't get what I went there for.

Forget it. I don't need to be able to drive in China. I can survive on Didi (China uber).

oomigosh sorry. Life has been just so so so so busy. I guess it's a good thing? Work has been pleasantly busy with ad hoc stupid things happening (the IT email system would refuse to "release" certain emails sent to me... it's just OTPs which I NEED for work related things)

I've been trying to read more and the other day, just for fun, I bought a small 6" ereader from Taobao. It was like... more or less USD $40 for it. The OS is a little funky, it would take some time to get used to it, but, once books are set in there, then it's great. I guess my eyesight is still good, I still think the text is a bit too big even on the small screen. I think if they can go just one point smaller then it would be perfect. I think I'm going to use the tiny ereader for when I go on holiday. It weighs next to nothing (yeah, it's small) and is very convenient to just throw it back into the bag. But then maybe I'll think it looks more like a phone and then prefer to bring the larger devices again. Dunno. We'll see?

I have been diligent! i have been running consistently lately. Yesterday I even went to a running shoe trial event for a new PUMA model. I will admit it IS indeed pretty comfortable and the rebound made running very eash for the knees, but I didn't buy them. My pair of Nikes are still relatively new so, once I rack up the 500km on them then I will think about getting new shoes. At least now, I know not to limit my search to just Nike.
Untitled Untitled Untitled

Here's a few kitty and doggy photos LOL. I'm just trying to play on my Switch, my friends. I got back to Final Fantasy X and I guess I've been a little spoiled by the newer games where we can rotate the view? I kept trying to rotate the view there LOL but view rotate wasn't a thing yet on that Final Fantasy installment. I'm still not where I had stopped in my previous playthrough on the PS2 (never finished because the disc later skidded and would stop at one specific point) and I've already forgotten how unbelievably sad the storyline is. I went ahead and read some spoilers and ooooh it just hits the heart even more.
Untitled Untitled

I've been feeding these kitties that live at the place where I park my car. The black and white one (Tuxedo cat?) is pretty friendly with me now, he would come up to me and rub my legs as I'm preparing his dinner. I can also touch him now but only for a bit, touch him a bit longer and he eyes me with contempt and walks away. The other tiger stripe-y brown-grey is still super wary of me. Can't see if it's a he or she, it would come up to near me for the food but would run away as soon as I look at it. There's actually a third black and white cat that is TOTALLY afraid of me, I've only seen that one twice. But I do have a third bowl ready for whenever that one shows up.
Untitled

And ooooh. I took some time off from my usual ceramic doggies and kitties planters, so that I could use the wheel and throw some items, then learn this, Portuguese Faience.
Untitled

The flowers and the lemons were the actual thing being taught. You can see I very soon ditched that and started to do my own thing LOL!

IMG_1227 Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants
Robin Wall Kimmerer
Amazon Product Link

As a botanist, Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to ask questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowledge together to take us on “a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific, as sacred as it is historical, as clever as it is wise” (Elizabeth Gilbert).

Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist, and as a woman, Kimmerer shows how other living beings—asters and goldenrod, strawberries and squash, salamanders, algae, and sweetgrass—offer us gifts and lessons, even if we've forgotten how to hear their voices. In reflections that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that threaten its flourishing today, she circles toward a central argument: that the awakening of ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. For only when we can hear the languages of other beings will we be capable of understanding the generosity of the earth, and learn to give our own gifts in return.

Listened as an audiobook.

There were quite a bit of scientific names that I don’t remember now, but those were just given for reference.

I liked hearing about the ways of the Indian Tribes, how there’s this ritual of thanks. Glad to say I do something similar.

This was a pretty long listen (17 hours), and I will definitely admit my attention did slip in parts but I think I’ve listened to the main bits.

IMG_1226 Apprentice to the Villain (Assistant to the Villain #2)
Hannah Nicole Maehrer
Amazon Product Link

NOTICE TO STAFF: There has been a disturbing increase in cheeriness, sprightly behavior, and overall optimism of late. Please resume your former dark, ominous terrors at your earliest convenience. ―Mgmt

Evie Sage has never been happier to be the assistant to The Villain. Who would have thought that working for an outrageously handsome (shhh, bad for his brand) evil overlord would be so rewarding? Still, the business of being bad is demanding, the forces of good are annoyingly persistent, and said forbidding boss is somewhat…er, out-of-evil-office.

But Rennedawn is in grave trouble, and all signs―Kingsley’s included―point to catastrophe. Something peculiar is happening with the kingdom’s magic, and it’s made The Villain’s manor vulnerable to their enemies...including their nemesis, the king.

Now it’s time for Evie to face her greatest challenge: protecting The Villain’s lair, all of his nefarious works, and maybe (provided no one finds out) the entire kingdom. No pressure, Evie.

It’s time to step out of her comfort zone and learn new skills. Like treason. Dagger work. Conspiring with the enemy. It’s all so…so…delightfully fun.

But what happens when the assistant to The Villain is ready to become his apprentice?

= + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = +

Overall the same fun read as the first book, but I really didn’t appreciate the increased romance.
With where the romance is headed, it’s very likely I’ll not read the last book, when it comes out. I don’t know. The crazy ridiculous parts are still fun.
Now, what should I read next?

Oh boy, time indeed flies. April's coming up!

Lookie! It's flowering! It's been a year and it's the first time this African Violet is flowering, so I had no idea this would be such a pretty pink. I also decided to get this acrylic stand thing for all my stones. The light won't always be on (it'll discolor the stones)

A colleague of mine went to a chinese medicine doctor and she said she got the worst most horrible herbal tea ever, so I decided to challenge. I got this very cinnamon-y herbal tea and when I compared my "herb list recipe" with hers, apparently we got different concoctions, so I still couldn't try that worst tea she had.
Untitled

Was going to an Andrea Bocelli show and so had to accessorize for a night. These are stick-ons and I can feel they are coming off already... it's been... 1 night only. I probably have the wrong glue, but I also don't want to use a too-strong glue.
Untitled

Went to have lunch with a friend and the Burmese Coconut Chicken noodles was highly recommended. It was damn good indeed! But the coconut milk messed with me. I had an almost-accident going home, then actually had an accident when I was walking the dog. Toilet-related accident, enough said!
Untitled

So at the concert venue, while we were waiting for the show to start, a friend sent me this photo. I knew she was going, and we bought same-price tickets, but I managed to get a middle section. She said "you're being supervised!"

I've actually been to the Sanxingdui Museum in Sichuan, but I don't know why I don't have it in my Flickr albums.

Anyway, back in 2014, I went on a company trip to Sichuan, and there part of the tour was a visit to the Sanxingdui Museum. I really liked the exhibits there but they only had main titles in English and not much explanation in English, and my Chinese reading skills were way way way worse back then, so I vowed I would go again.
Untitled

It so happens they did go to Hong Kong once (which I didn't know of) and then to Macau (I had planned to go but when I wanted to go it was over) and now it was in Hengqin. It's near enough, so I thought I might as well make a trip out of it.

It was a full trip of taking the newfangled Light rail from peninsula side to Cotai side then switch trains to the Hengqin Border. Took an uber to the Museum location, which wasn't that far away, could have walked there in 15 minutes, but, lucky I didn't, as later I was so spent... guess I'm not fully recovered yet.
Untitled

But it's the same case as before, they only had a few titles in English, but now I can read a little more Chinese, so I'm still glad I came all the way here.
Untitled Untitled

Again it was a rookie move to come on a Sunday, but my Sis wanted to come and our day offs only coincide on Sundays (she has Sundays and Mondays off, I have the usual Saturdays and Sundays).
Untitled Untitled

All very fascinating stuff.
Untitled Untitled

I found a way to take slightly better photos of the exhibits, and it was to tone down the brightness. This way the people disappeared.
Untitled Untitled

Pretty cute figurines
Untitled

But even in Chinese, there wasn't exactly much explanation on each and every item.
Untitled Untitled

This totem pole is a 3D print replica.
Untitled Untitled

The gift shop had a hilarious design of this chicken as part of their merchandise. I didn't get any though.
Untitled
Untitled

Something different, this was in the section of lacquer stuff.
Untitled

And this was the funniest thing I saw... it's actually part of the toy model set, and they designed that these statues are playing mahjong.
Untitled

I mucked around with the map app and decided we could just walk back towards the border area. There's a... shopping mall there. We had lunch in the al fresco first, but should have gone in immediately because there were more interesting things inside.
Untitled

Such as this doggie bench LOL.
Untitled

There was a Spar supermarket, it amused us to no end to see an European brand supermarket here, but none of the Spar products. We saw quite a bit of foreigners here, and I guess they probably are staff or students from the University of Macau, because the University campus is on this side (though the access is a bit roundabout).

We decided to have some dessert before leaving
Untitled Untitled

We left home around 10ish and came back home maybe 3ish? but I'm totally destroyed with this short trip. I need some more time to recuperate, I guess!

Ah… I can’t shake this headache. But overall, I’m feeling heaps better today than yesterday. I had pain in my bones yesterday, shaking as if I had a seizure. Today I only have a slight headache, some achy joints, but overall feeling better.

I’d like to talk about… Pingduoduo! (I think the western equivalent is “Temu”).

I used to say Taobao (AlieExpress) had weird and crazy inventions. Well, Pingduoduo is the same, but at a crazy cheap price that I’m actually afraid of the actual product.

For the sake of research and curiosity, I got a couple things:
Untitled

Note: this is… 8 bucks my money. 8 bucks my money would make it roughly USD $1. This got me to thinking, assuming man-hours are free, how much are the freaking materials costing?
Untitled Untitled

I can see the knit is actually a machine knit, and the materials a bit on the flimsy side, but, USD $1? It’s crazy.

I wonder if I got covid from this monstrosity.

The next thing I got was this keychain pouch for an RFID door chip thingamajig. How nice, the presentation on the photos, all embossed, nicely stitched.
Untitled Untitled

In reality, it was just a basic print all. (The embossing is fake, they printed a shadow to make it look embossed). The stitching also leaves a lot to be desired.
Untitled

But then again, for 6 bucks my money, I can’t complain. But I did go to Taobao and look for a more decently priced, $40 one to see if it will look better.

Goes to show you should expect poorer quality when stuff are inexplicably cheap. There are some things though, that I would be looking to get from there. For example, the pet pee sheets for Sai Lup (because he's always lying down, we put a pet sheet around his wee wee part, in case he drips and if he poopoos), they haven't arrived yet, so I'm not sure of the quality, but we'll see.

Can’t breathe

Had a terribly sore throat yesterday, went to the company clinic, and then in the afternoon had some serious chills and I was shaking, really jerky shaking, and not small tremors.
Untitled

And of course I got covid… don’t even know from where.

Could have been from the 10km run event?
Untitled

Dunno. Not sure. Anyway, yesterday was the darkest day, I just got home and slept. This morning decided to go to the government hospital. They made me do this test and this is how I know now.

Today I’m actually feeling a lot better, more alert, and best of all, I’m constantly feeling famished. That means I’m on the road to recovery, right?

I don’t want to miss my Chinese class tonight, but I also don’t want to be the one that spreads the germs around. Aiyaya, and I was planning to get a perfect attendance record for this semester.

Hannah Nicole Maehrer
Amazon Product Link

Once Upon a Time meets The Office in Hannah Maehrer’s laugh-out-loud viral TikTok series turned novel, about the sunshine assistant to an Evil Villain…and their unexpected romance.

ASSISTANT WANTED: Notorious, high-ranking villain seeks loyal, levelheaded assistant for unspecified office duties, supporting staff for random mayhem and terror, and other Dark Things In General. Discretion a must. Excellent benefits.

With ailing family to support, Evie Sage's employment status isn't just important, it's vital. So when a mishap with Rennedawn’s most infamous Villain results in a job offer―naturally, she says yes. No job is perfect, of course, but even less so when you develop a teeny crush on your terrifying, temperamental, and undeniably hot boss. Don’t find evil so attractive, Evie.

But just when she’s getting used to severed heads suspended from the ceiling and the odd squish of an errant eyeball beneath her heel, Evie suspects this dungeon has a huge rat…and not just the literal kind. Because something rotten is growing in the kingdom of Rennedawn, and someone wants to take the Villain―and his entire nefarious empire―out.

Now Evie must not only resist drooling over her boss but also figure out exactly who is sabotaging his work…and ensure he makes them pay.

After all, a good job is hard to find.

The Assistant and the Villain series is best enjoyed in order.
Reading Order:
Book #1 Assistant to the Villain
Book #2 Apprentice to the Villain
Book #3 Accomplice to the Villain

= + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = +

Alrighty, this was a cute read. The title of the book sort of called to me as I’m a working EA (though it does feel more like a PA sometimes). Here’s me choosing a random book by title only, I didn’t even read the Synopsis.

I originally thought this would be a modern world thing, but then apparently, it’s a… medieval timeline thing. And then it started to stump me, because it was a medieval thing but with so much modern world references. So in the end I figured it was a fantasy thing.

Anyway, it was a cute read. A bit corny on the romance part. The dialogue’s sometimes crazy, but certainly similar to how my brain would jump topics.

Looking forward to reading the second book, and the next as well.

Had some time to kill today so figured I'd do a FF... after a long while

These questions were written by ange402[profile] ange420.

1. How far back can you trace your family tree?
I personally know up to my grandparents on both sides of my family. I've heard about both great-grandma on my mother's side (grandpa's mom and grandma's mom). On my father's side, I've heard talk about a few great grand something's but I don't know for sure.
I know my sister is playing around with some family tree heritage website so she's been actively receiving updates (such as finding obituaries about certain people)... while I do find that interesting, I'm not interested enough to actually go looking for the information.

2. What is the most interesting (or strange) thing you've heard about one of your relatives?
Mother's side, grandma's mom was an orphan or something along those lines.
Father's side, random tidbits about his cousins and about some that got sick in the head.

3. How do you feel about legacy names like John Henry Smith IV or naming children after other relatives?
Not really something my family does, at least, my direct family. My sis and I were given only 1 first name (given my Portuguese heritage, I thought I would have more "given names). I know 2 of my cousins (mom's side of the family) that have the same given name (albeit second or third name only) but I have no comment about whether it's proper or whatever.

4. Would you consider yourself and/or your family to be traditional?
I suppose both sides of my family are pretty traditional? Although, I have to ask, what is traditional? I wasn't strictly brought up in either culture and tradition... I was brought up in a third culture and tradition. Name-wise, I guess Mom kept the Portuguese thing of combing surnames? Officially I have both Mom's surname and Dad's surname, not hyphenated. I don't even understand that concept. I mean, if I want to I can drop Mom's part of the surname and be just Ms. Dad'sSurname, but on official documents I'm Ms. Mom'sSurnameDad'sSurname.
We don't celebrate any of the Portuguese holidays, neither the Austrian. Christmas is an "international" thing I suppose. Yeah, maybe in October (is it even in October?) we do the chestnut thing (Portuguese culture I think). Dad also likes to cook an Austrian menu on the national day (26 October)... we don't deal with Krampus.
Third culture? Yeah, we do the Chinese new year thing, we do the dumpling thing (dragon boat), we do the moon cake thing (mid-Autumn), but it's more doing it because everyone's doing it.

5. What is one tradition you have passed on to your children and/or plan to pass on to them?
Don't have kids of my own but I guess my Mom's instilled something in me and my Mom (she was a school principal) is coming out of me in a few ways LOL. The other day I had lunch with a friend, she brought another friend, and this friend brought her 2 kids. Really badly-behaved. At one point when the daughter thought she didn't have enough attention she yelled at her mother "Hey, lady, I'm talking to you!" Guess what, I got possessed by my Mom (she's very much alive ok LOL) and I scolded the kid "Is that how you talk to your Mom? This is not polite at all!" I don't think friend's friend appreciated my "scolding" the kid but hey, that was really poor behavior.

One day in February, my friend came across a really decent promotion with Air Macau, so we got flight tickets to Taipei. The tickets were like, less than USD $100. And the timing was a bit crazy-but-useful.

I had to depart around 5.30am, and since everyone else was sleeping, wrote down instructions on which Lai See (hongbao) to give to who and how to feed the cats (I've got new wild cats - there are two cats in my car park, I've started feeding them, and they wait for me to get home now LOL)
Untitled

Got to the airport before 6am, got checked in, got pleasantly surprised that Starbucks was open this early, got some breakfast. Our flight was scheduled to take off at 7:30am, but we were all boarded and taxi-ing off the park area at 7:10am, and actually took off earlier than scheduled. That was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Landed, dropped bags in the the hotel, then off we went for our first meal in Taipei: Brunch. I promised my friends I would be taking it easy on this trip, so I wasn't pushing for any itinerary or where to go, and squeezing. Brunch was at a place called Nook. Interesting, but nothing to write home about.
Untitled Untitled

After brunch, we walked all the way to Shinkong Mitsukoshi in Xinyi because my friend's target was to get new glasses. I wasn't really looking to replace my glasses, but they had something interesting. J!NS has a crossover with Dragonball (the anime) and they've got some really cool colors. I immediately fell for the Piccolo green-and-purple combination which I decided to get. But instead of blue-light lens, I got those that turn dark in the sun. My other two friends? Both got 2 pairs of some frames they chose each.
Untitled Untitled

One of my friends was dejected that she was going to miss out on a lunch at a certain restaurant, because it had "break hours" between lunch and dinner. I got distracted by a Pokemon sign on a lower floor (I saw through the escalator gap) and went down there to look. Friends followed me then the dejected one screamed OMG. Apparently, the restaurant she wanted to go to had a branch restaurant in the mall's food court. So she was happy again. Thank ME for chasing shinies LOL.
Untitled

Then we went to another building (Shinkong Mitsukoshi Xinyi has a couple buildings next to each other) and we saw another glasses shop, OWNDAYS. They also had their own line of Dragon Ball crossover, and that I found weird for Dragon Ball... would a brand crossover with two same industry at the same time? IT was weird. But this set of crossover did not catch my eyes.
Untitled

So while one of my friends went about getting another 2 pair of glasses, my other friend accompanied me to go upstairs to the POKEMON CENTER TAIPEI!
Untitled Untitled

You bet I got something LOL. I got something functional though. I knew my Sis was looking to replace her thermos bottle, so I sent her a photo and she wanted a black bottle with a Pikachu silhouette on it. I got an outright Pikachu yellow bottle one LOL. I have to sort out my bottles... i have too many, and some are actually too old and should be replaced.
Untitled Untitled

We next went to a place called Ronjing Gorgeous Time. It's just a street and some buildings are being converted/adapted for new businesses. The area was actually a Japanese prison.
Untitled

Dinner was at Uncle Shawn, it's BBQ and the staff cook it for you. The food was good, and some really, really, really good items. But overall it felt a bit pricey for the little food we ordered.

One of the actually good items that wasn't BBQ-ed. A scallop burger (scallop for "buns" and Uni and Crab... gunk? for the insides)

That dinner wasn't filling enough, so we went to Shida Night Market...

More crap to see but i didn't buy any!

And we had "Lo-mei" (soy sauce braised food?), this was sooooooooo satisfying, yum yum!

The hotel wasn't anything to write home about either. Breakfast was abyssmal! We first went to the Taiwan National Science Education Center because there was an AI Art exhibit thing going on. But geez, it was a total rookie move to go on a Sunday, because, KIDS. To be fair, when I did the research, it did say the last day was on 9 March Sunday, and so we went there on the last day, but then found out it's actually extended up to April.

The science center itself was pretty cool though.

Where there's a dangerous-looking bridge but obviously it's safe to walk on, I'd go LOL.
Untitled Untitled

There was also an AI Sports exhibit but we didn't go. Hippos showing you how to exercise LOL.
Untitled

AI Art Exhibition.
Untitled

First we've got some trick-eye trickery.
Untitled

Here you become the conductor and wave the baton around. Apparently, the imagery does follow your lead.
Untitled

Here you pull the ship and the line also follows your pull, I think.
Untitled

Moses dividing the sea at a wave of a stick also.
Untitled

We were famished after that, so went to have lunch. We were in Dongmen area and walked along that hip shopping street.
Untitled Untitled

Green bean milk ice fleecy thingamajig.
Untitled

Next we went to Huashan Cultural... something 1914. It's a whole park area and they put artsy exhibits year round. We went first because of the Ghibli exhibit (but it felt more like an Animage magazine exhibit)
Untitled

Nostalgia galore LOL
Untitled Untitled

I always thought the mask in Naussica made them look like they were pretending to be dogs.
Untitled Untitled

Apparently one of my friends is deathly afraid of the... giant bug thing in Naussica.
Untitled Untitled

Oh boy, I haven't really watched the whole Graveyard of Fireflies but I know the gist of it and know what happens in the end.
Untitled

Hey, the Ghibli museum thing in Tokyo has a Cat Bus that you can't go in (age limit, over 6years old not allowed) but this one here I GOT IN!

Almost the end of it.

Yeah I heard about the new park, so I should check it out for my next trip in May!

There was also a Peanuts exhibit hall.
Untitled

So cute and sweet!

Still, some plushie crossover(ish) designs are still... questionable... such as this Snake Snoopy LOL. I didn't buy anything but did pay to play 2 gachapons. I got a reusable bag (by the size it looks like a bento bag, which I may give my Sis) and last year's Bunny Snoopy crossover LOL.

A friend really wanted a certain Omakase, but I guess the good ones are hard to book. This one was... totally underwhelming... or have I turned into a snob?

I'm not going to post everything.

And another friend wanted to try cocktails (I think it's sort of part of her job?)
Untitled

Interesting menu, but the boy (waiter) failed at first meet.
Untitled Untitled

We were 4 people. Only 2 of us ordered on the first round. Guy doesn't have a pen and paper, and just "remembers" the order. We wait a really long time (too long for a cocktail, but I didn't time it either) and he brought us 2 totally wrong drinks. He knew he made a mistake because as he brought the two drinks (one of them was wrong), he asked, "You did order something else, right?" And I really don't know what to comment on.
Untitled Untitled

oh, and they relied on photo trickery... these two below are the same drink...

Anyway, next day, we go to Ximending for some final shopping (and breakfast, because hotel breakfast sucks)
Untitled

Roamed Eslite bookstore as well. Found a hilarious book where they replaced main imagery of famous paintings with... Chihuahuas haha!
Untitled Untitled

We had a quick final lunch at another BBQ place, this time grill it yourself, and stopped by a couple more stores for souvenirs.
Untitled Untitled

oh, I forgot to say, those new glasses felt so good that on the second day, late at night, I decided to get another pair, this time the Supreme Kai color (it's a turqoise and pink I think) but this time with blue-light glasses, so now I have a proper pair of glasses for weekend and driving, and a pair for the office.

And then, we made our way back home.

I decided to make a quick trip to Guangzhou with my Sister, to see how the big country is.

Took the High Speed Rail there. We managed to get first class tickets, so we got freebie stuff. My Sis however, had to go on the passport lane and she needed half an hour for immigration, whereas I crossed in 1 minute with the automated gate. We almost didn't make it to the train LOL.
Untitled Untitled

First stop we went to a Jade market, but I was sort of disillusioned about it. But hey, I got to play with a Frenchie LOL.
Untitled Untitled

Then we walked along the back street behind the jade market, but there wasn't really anything special, so we went to hunt for lunch.
Untitled Untitled

This area is known as the "Shangxiajiu" (Up-down-Nine). I didn't check out any more history about it. I only remember my friend brought me here one time to walk along the shopping street.
Untitled Untitled Untitled

Found a lunch spot. It was... an interesting lunch. Korean BBQ, complete with a christmas tree, LOL. Food was good value and meanwhile, I searched on the Dianping (some sort of... platform listing locations) to see what's more around there.
Untitled Untitled

I saw there was actually a crystal stone market, and I think this was what I originally wanted to go to, and got misdirected to the jade market. This place was HHHHUUUUGGGGGEEEEEEE. Quite a bit of foreigners too, I think those were business people getting wholesale merchandise.
Untitled Untitled

Soon, it was time to head back.
Untitled

The train back did not have first class, so we were on economy class, but with a reserved seat, so we had a quiet ride home.

My recent entertainment has been watching live sales on Taobao. I think I've held myself pretty well. Yes, I've bought a bit of stuff, but not mountainous stuff as I would have liked had I not had self-restraint.

There's this one Taobao store that says they are a "tea utensils workshop", and they do a live sales session every morning. They have a weird kiln-in-kiln set up, and their live sales is a show of "opening a kiln" and seeing the piece "for the first time". I've watched this live sales for around a week and I think I've figured out that their kiln is a fake kiln LOL.

Also, out of curiosity, I "snatched" (since their set up is there's only 1 of each item) a piece and I have it in hand, and I can all the more confidently say, their live sales is all a set up LOL.

Untitled

For one, the bottom part of a piece usually is not so "clean" (no run-over? no drag? No cracks?) and the inside is a piece of... metal or alum or something not clay, it looks stuck on instead of part of the entire piece, so I don't know.

I'm also following 2 other shops that do live slaes of jewelry. They're pretty entertaining, and what's more, it's not just entertainment for me, I also get to train my ear to listen to Mandarin. I have bought a couple of items, but they are selling stuff so cheap during the live sales, it's a bit unbelievable.

UntitledNot Without My Sister: The True Story of Three Girls Violated and Betrayed by Those They Trusted K
Kristina Jones, Celeste Jones, Juliana Buhring
Amazon Product Link

Kristina, Celeste, and Juliana were all born into the Children of God cult, and from as early as three years old were mistreated and used as sexual beings. They were denied access to formal schooling, forced to wander the streets begging for money, and were mercilessly beaten for "crimes" as harmless as reading an encyclopedia. After being separated from each other and their mothers and forced to live in various missions with multiple foster parents, the sisters eventually managed to escape. In this startling exposé, they have come together to reveal in horrific detail the group that has destroyed the lives of so many. Their intertwining stories reveal a community spread throughout the world whose legacy of anorexia, depression, drug abuse, suicide, and even murder are impossible to erase. Together, the sisters found a strength that finally enabled them to uncover and free themselves from the shadows of their past.

Saw a friend reading this book and got curious as it's about the cult Children of God.

Three different perspectives, not exactly linear, but linear enough.

This time Macau was mentioned only in passing. I was curious to know if any other historical-stuff were mentioned about Macau. Thanks to my having read the other book, "Sex Cult Nun" first, I already had some general knowledge of the Macau base.

This just goes to show, even children will eventually realise what is fair/right. It really made my blood boil when I read about the unfair treatment (the tattle-tales lying, and the adults believing the liars without proof and such).

Untitled ADHD is Awesome: A Guide to (Mostly) Thriving with ADHD
Penn Holderness, Kim Holderness
Amazon Product Link

Hi, friend! Welcome to the ADHD club.

You're here because, like me, you've been diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder—which, by the way, just might be the worst name for a condition ever—and you're trying to figure out how to make your life a little more manageable. Or because, like my wife, Kim, you love, teach, or work with someone who has ADHD, and you're trying to figure out how to best support them.

The world isn't built for ADHDers, and navigating it can wear us down. But we'll let you in on a little secret: having ADHD doesn't have to be a burden. It can actually be a superpower that propels you to creative heights and allows you to achieve more than you ever thought possible.

We want to give you a new perspective on ADHD, whether it's your own brain or a friend or family member's that you're trying to understand. We hope you come away with strategies you can employ to make things a little easier. (We also hope you laugh out loud, at least once or twice.)

Most of all, we want you to silence that voice that whispers that you're broken or a mess or a failure. None of that is true. You have ADHD—and that makes you awesome.

—Penn Holderness

Audiobook listen (random "available now" loan)

It was mid-way through this book that I realise I had watched some reels from this family.

Being all my life in Asia, I've got a rather "Asian" mentality that... "there are no 'mental illnesses'". Yes, I get to read about different instances (ADHD/Autism/Depression/etc) and while I know they are very much true, "thanks" to my upbringing, many times my first gut reaction is like, "they just don't have enough willpower." I am trying to rectify my thoughts.

In many parts, wherein they explain the traits of ADHD, I'll be like "huh, that's me too, but that's no excuse," or "that sounds like me before but I've worked to change that!" etc. I can only say, different culture, different tolerances.

And what I'm slightly annoyed with is, they keep saying "you need to be patient or give chances to ADHD-ers", but the fact is, you need to patient or give chances to everyone. But it's a tricky line to go over, I'm sure. It's a long road to unlearn something I've been taught all my life... I'm trying....

I... don't understand LOL. I arranged that karaoke thing, we were a decent group of 12 people. I only went after class so they were already there when I arrived. I asked the staff what was ordered, and I saw it was 2 French fries and 2 pizzas. There were 2 tables in our room, so I assumed they were going to share. I ordered 2 portions of shrimp cakes.

When the food arrived, I was trying to distribute food between the two tables, but one lady was like "No! Both are for us!" And they each took a tray of fries. When my shrimp cakes arrived, they were all like "what is this? We didn't order this!?" Okay? This is for everyone to eat? Finger food sharing? Ever heard of it?

They told me to choose a couple of songs, but I declined. They were already hyper with their Green Day's and I don't know who else. Someone chose Michael Jackson's Thriller and it's a commitment going through that. I didn't want to choose a Japanese song that nobody knows and then kill the mood.

Heck, someone picked the song All I want for Christmas.

Someone picked.... Vengabus?  And some other super old songs.... Oasis, ABBA... basically really old stuff LOL.

It's Saturday so I went to the workshop and work on my cats... and in the morning a pottery throwing course. Had to trim all my nails really short. I had some gel nails that I didn't have time to get to the parlor to remove it. So I'm just going to let them grow out and then fix as I go.

After lunch, we went back to the workshop but this time not for the wheel, but my regular stuff.
IMG_5920

Later at night went to get dinner with friends at the coconut chicken place.

And the cats looking cute.

... or, I do like to meet people, but I'm not big on initiating or hosting stuff.

This "mostly foreigners group chat" that I'm in had this... plan about donig a karaoke night. Well, people had voted on a date, but the "real" planners couldn't do it on that day, and then asked me what to do. I was like... "I'm no party planner..." it's not that I don't want to do the work (I do that plenty of family), I just don't know where to start when it's with a group of strangers.

Don't know why in the end it came to me to call in regrets and to start checking out local karaoke places. I don't even go clubbing and karaoke-ing in town (I mostly go karaoke in Zhuhai). I've since posted some information of a basic karaoke place. I hope the usual singers will handle that again.

The week is finally over, and tomorrow starts a new pottery throwing class. So I'll have a good 8 weeks without doing my usual doggy and kitty planters. I figured I need to practice throwing pottery... so... that's what I'll be doing. I am so very tempted to stay in the afternoon to work on my doggies, but there's this new meeting for the shelter I volunteer at... and I also don't really want to attend because, people.

I don't know why I give off the energy and impression that people think "I will do stuff for them". Well, I do when asked, coz I'm a sucker that don't know how to say no, so I don't really want to go to these meetings. But I'm also curious because the president has said she's gonna call it quits and going back to her home country. If that's the case, what will happen to the shelter and the doggies?

UntitledThat reminds me, back in... was it June? April? of last year, I came across a dog that was walking alone in the streets, getting in traffic, and all that. I called a few shelters and only one of them came to help. It wasn't the shelter I volunteer at because "they have no volunteers, can you handle it yourself?" wtf.

When the other shelter I called agreed to help, they sent the municipal kennel people (government shelter) to catch the dog. The president of the shelter that I volunteer at then asked me (sarcastically? condesendingly?) that that was irresponsible to call the kennel because they will kill the dog. Well. this other shelter actually took the dog after the 2-week quarantine placed, just before they killed the dog. I decided to sponsor for that dog. It's pretty old so they had to charge the geriatric dog fee (costs a pretty penny).

They sent me an update today, the dog looks HEAPS better. It's been neutered, got teeth scaled, showered and trimmed. I'm glad I called this other shelter instead of the shelter I volunteer at. People have asked why I keep volunteering there, and yes, I do think other shelters are doing a better job, but then I think I'm just doing this for the dogs. But then again, it's not like I'm the lifeline, so..... I am seriously considering resigning.

We got hit by a pretty cold front the last 2 weeks, so I dug out our age-old heating blankets that we can't use as heating blankets; the plastic's sort of turned a little hard so can't really use as "blanket". Intead I've put it under the mattress protector, and it works more like a bed warmer. Can't leave it on for long periods, because, fire harzard, but I do switch it one for 30 minutes when I'm in the room because the cats seem to like a warm bed.

Today it's a little warmer, but yesterday, it was pretty cold. I could withstand the cold pretty well but even so, I find, sitting on something warm is pretty comfy LOL. I finally understand our cat that likes to sit on the modem/router. Butt-warming is nice haha.

I've received a couple more travel requests/reasons for travel. Oh boy, what to plan, how to plan, woooo!

Travel bug?

Has the travel bug bitten me? Just two weeks ago I was lamenting with my friend that I've seemed to have lost my drive for traveling this year... so far. Well, I suddenly decided I wanted to go to Tokyo to participate in a Kinsugi workshop and also to see the Wisteria garden. So I got the tickets.

Then just now, in just 4 hours, another friend looped me to get tickets for Taipei in March... tickets were like... just $900 MOP (USD $120).

So I am now all set for Taipei in March, Tokyo in May. We are still thinking about our annual long-haul trip (I'm thinking of Turkey group tour then extend our stay in Istanbul) but that's still in the thinking. (I really wanted Greece, but it seems my friend will be going to Greece with her family).
