Look at this beauty of a Jewel Orchid! It's new!

The fake pumpkins (the plant is actually a species of eggplant, but the inedible fruits look like pumpkins) have turned orange waaaaayyyyyy earlier than the usual September-November. There's still some green, so maybe... it'll work out? With the last year's fruits, it took a long time for the fruits to dry up, shrivel and fall off, but still keeping the distinct orange color.

Oh and the McD's over here now have a Pokémon crossover. The bag box has a tail too! LOL

The burger itself? Well, they used sliced beef (instead of the burger patty) and for the bread it's actually a sticky rice patty thing. So shall I rename it as a rice burger? And the pie, it's an Apple Custard pie. It's just the regular apple pie with a slab of custard. I prefer the original. And actually, I never liked McD's anyway, except for their pancakes. Oh, and for this Pokémon crossover they have a chocolate banana McFlurry thing. I didn't get that as I didn't want it to melt, so one of these days, I will try that too.

Random photo dump of streets when I went strolling around on Sunday. I took a bus to get to the area I wanted to go, but I took a bus with a different route so it stopped a little away from where I really wanted to go, so I had to find my way back to the main street. I'm glad it was still daylight as I would never walk through unlit alleys at night.

That monster of a golden pineapple building in the far end LOL! You can see it everywhere!

Another silly observation is, the sign and the arrows says "pedestrian way" but I have no idea where it leads to LOL

I was bemoaning that my Suehime (Japanese Rose) was just... falling leaves and probably dying? Well, I figured, let me take the chance to try and shape the branches like in a bonsai and went ahead and did that. Hurt like a b*tch because of the thorns. Then I just let it out under the sun and continued to water it every day... and guess what, it's sprouting leaves again.

I very much doubt it's the wiring, so it's most probably some kind of disease that killed all the existing leaves and now new leaves are growing?

Did a bit of gardening this morning so I just thought to put it on record for my own future reference.

My first terrarium. Still looking good. The red pagoda is growing like crazy. I've already cut the top off as it was squishing into the glass, but no sooner had I cut the top off, had it started sprouting new leaves at the cut site. It's a tad scary, really!

Sometimes, I think life is just out to get me.

I was feeling miserable over the weekend. I was taking proper cold and flu medicine as well. We have this brand called Panadol, it's a paracetamol based medication (didn't bother to remember the other stuff). It's got a few different versions of medication - there's the normal Panadol, there's the Extra version. So, say painkiller, they have the regular version, and the Extra version, supposedly a better formula than the normal. Same for the cold & flu remedy, there's the normal and extra. The list goes on (menstrual pain, joint pain, stomach pains, etc). So I had been taking the Extra version of the cold and flu remedy for 2 days. I practically finished 2 boxes of the medicine, and I did not get better. Nose/Sinus still miserable, runny nose, sleepy tired and all that.

I went to the pharmacy to get an extra box when the lady said they're out of the Extra version and so I bought the normal version. After I paid, the lady asked why I wasn't buying something with a better formula. Thanks lady, for telling me after I've paid. But I'm also stingy, so I didn't take her advise.

I don't know if it's because I've been sick for 3 days, taking medication for 2 days, so got better, or what. But I was still feeling miserable today. But an hour after I took a dose of the normal version of the cold and flu medication, I was suddenly totally cured. And I mean totally cured. And it happened suddenly. Sinus not in pain, no more runny nose. Practically one minute to the next. So I go out of my way to get the supposedly better "Extra" version of the medication and it does shit, whereas the regular old normal version actually works better?

On a happier note..... LOOK AT MY BEAUTIFUL SAKURA BONSAI MOSS BALL TREE THING!... Progression photos!

Starting out bald...

Then it started to slowly bloom!

My Sis got hers the same time as mine (I actually picked both up on the same day). The only difference is, I put mine out under the sun for around 2 hours every morning, and my Sis kept her indoors everyday.

The flowers are just popping!

And here it is as today. I think this is the nicest it's gonna get, as the flowers will probably start wilting or dropping off soon (though I see a few buds still in progress of blooming)

Seeing the Sakura tree blooming just makes me think of this song (let's see if I can find it). Field Of View (band) was pretty big before, especially their POCARI SWEAT CM clip 突然. People who don't even speak Japanese or like Japanese songs probably can sing that song... this is how big they were before. This clip below is called さくら咲くこの場所で

It's the week before Chinese New Year. Usually, there are flower markets right about this time, and everyone goes to the flower market to "walk the flower market" (行花市).

With the COVID-19 situation, since flower markets will attract A LOT of people, the government in Macau (and in Hong Kong, that I hear) has decided to cancel the flower markets this year.

So... what happened now is... each florist (and non-florist) is hosting their own flower market!

The most popular flower for the Chinese New Year would be the Orchid. I'm trying to think of the Chinese name and if it links up to anything, but I can't think of anything that pops to my mind. And since I'm lazy, here's a handy website explaining each and everything. I wanted to get a very simple orchid that my Sis got last week, so after lunch today, we made a grand tour of visiting all the florists we know of (and those we don't know of).

About my comment above, "each florist and non-florist" is actually a hilarious truth. Let me explain!

So there are the regular florists and/or flower shops/stores/stalls...

I made it sound so serious, but it's not. The plant growth lights arrived! But the store forgot to send the rods to go with it, so I have one rod short for my office. Meh.

But, look at my wall!

Hm.... I need to see why that light on the right side is stooped so low. But... do you see it? Do YOU SEE IT????? Since we still can't travel anywhere at all, that means, no going to Japan! If you can't go to Japan... then you bring Japan home.

It arrived!

The mini Sakura Tree on a Moss Ball arrived! I need to take very good care of it! I hope it blooms in March/April!

The shop, however, did a very shoddy job of keeping their orders. On facebook, I saw that there were over 500 queries on this Moss Ball thing back in December. Assuming some people would think it too expensive and give up on it, I think they would still have at least 100 orders for it. When I went to the store, I said I ordered that, and placed a deposit. They checked a piece of paper, just 1 single piece of paper. How many lines can there be? 20? 30 tops? So only 30 people ordered? Of only phone numbers... nothing else? No client name, even "Facebook fake name" would work, but no. Just the phone number. No mention if they paid the deposit or not. No mention of the date they received the deposit on.

They had the audacity to tell me my phone number was not on their order list. I just showed them the Facebook message with them replying "OK Confirmed" and they begrudgingly gave me one. Duh. They need better admin skills. Hire me!

But I'm too excited to feel bothered by that. I also successfully contacted a Taobao store to custom make a transparent model display case, hopefully it comes in before the CNY holidays, then I have one more thing completed for my room.

Happy Kat

Oooh! The renovation guy remembered! He sent his minions to our place this morning and they finished my last wall as per my request.

However, it did not escape my eye that of those 2 shelves, he hung one by more or less 0.5cm higher than the other, so it's not entirely even. I mean, I thought they'd be able to do their own calculations and all that, but huh. But it's at a good height that if I sit on my bed against the wall, I will not hit my head, so it's all good.

My next course of action is to buy one more set of that light you see on the left shelf so that I could put it on the right shelf.

This way, I free up my window sill and the cats can lie there if they want. Nutmeg especially, loves to lie on the window sill and if I have plants there, she's just push them off (then everything dirties up my bed, meh). The round hanging terrarium will have to stay there because the base is a bit too wide for the shelf.

My Nerveplant is certainly slowly dying, even after changing the soil to dry it up, so I'm just slowly waiting for it to either die out entirely, or for a miracle to happen, as one of the leaves seem to be reviving under my new regime with them.

I had plans to bring the dogs to the vet yesterday for their cartophren shots, and also for Nutmeg for her actual shots (erm, I have no idea what shot that is, only know we must get it for a cat). But then Mom got a call from the home owner's group/association thing that they are sending some guys to fix something on our verandah (because that thing serves as the entire building's drainage system, so it's the group responsibility and not just ours). Mid-way through the afternoon the guys didn't come, so Mom called them again and they said we misunderstood, that they were coming the following day. It was too late to make the appointment at the vet already, and since now they confirm it's the next day, we can't book for the next day either... so it's next week.

Kitty being Kitty. She'd snuggle and rub and be all happy that you are petting her but she will turn around and scratch you if you pet her just a nano-mili-second more than she wants.

Since the sun was already on its way to setting (so it was hardly sunny at all), I decided to work on a couple of my plants.

It's still early-ish afternoon but I can't go anywhere because those guys are here fixing the verandah, so Mom wants us around to help keep an eye on the and keep an eye on the dogs. A little later when the guys are gone (I assume after 4 or 5pm) I might go for a 5km run, but we'll see. It IS almost 4pm now and it doesn't look like they are anywhere near done.

Today... such a long day!

First, I got woken up by Nutmeg at around 6am. She jumped onto me, did a zoomie spin kind of thing, then jumped off. That woke me up, and I thought, might as well for for a run! Although these 2 photos were taken quite a while apart, location-wise, these were opposing views. So when I was over at the Tower side, I saw that hilly view, and when I was over there, I saw that tower.

The sky was pretty hazy early on, so there was much nice photo shooting opportunity. As I ran, I saw at least 2 groups of photographers on their photo shooting outings. One of the groups was probably some sort of learning group.

As usual, we took the dogs for their walk. Dad got drunk when he went out with his friends last night, so today my Sis and I were pretty much on our own with the dogs, so we went to a new dog park. Super lucky, we got a car park. Frankie had a lot of fun, and even after a full 30minutes of his running around, when we got back into the car, he still wanted to stay out.

I had exchanged my left Apple AirPod Pro back in November because it started to get a lot of noise, and recently, the right one started to get that kind of noise too. So I went to the Apple Store this morning to get it sorted out. The guy confirmed I had problematic earphones, and then spun a story that "ah, if you pair an old earpod to a new earpod then you'd have to wait for them to sync, so I'm just going to replace both your earpods!" And thus, I got a new pair of AirPod Pro!

After that, we walked by this... erm... Deli Lounge kind of thing and we figured we could have lunch as well. Lunch was yummy, I really liked the couscous salad they served. I just might go there more often (I think they have a branch over in the peninsula side of town)

And then, my Sis brought me to this hidden florist/flower shop place. And jeez! I had looked high and low for the Rainbow Elephant Bush, asked people, walked around Macau (peninsula side) to look for them, and finally found baby saplings, and bought then... AND THEN I FIND THIS. Even though, I've reached a point where I know I shouldn't buy any more new plants, I couldn't not get that this time. I'll just place one in the office (and pray it doesn't die). Whoops, got a little carried away touching up photos and I uploaded this one that I've pushed saturation up. Sorry! I know I said plants should be posted unfiltered.

When we got home, I had to go out a few times (one to get Frankie out of the house, because some repairmen were hear fixing a drainage thing, one to bring something to my cousin, one to buy something that I was looking for, etc....) and on one of my trips out, I took Nutmeg with me, just so that she can have more practice of going out of the apartment.

And then, somehow, we find out Dad had fallen onto the ground last night when he was still out, and he was so drunk he didn't tell us anything last night. Today we see his wrist is all swollen, so, I had to drive him to the hospital. He's still waiting in the emergency room, but supposedly (and by experience), usually trauma cases have a shorter wait time, but he's still waiting. So we took the dogs to another dog park near the hospital, got them done (short video below, this dog park is quite nice, it's HUGE!), went to fill up the car, went back to the hospital, he was still waiting, so we went home first.

This was such a long day... I had never had an over 1000kcal day before, according to my watch. I'm beat. I want to go shower and just head off to bed, but then I think I should wait for Dad to be done at the hospital. I've asked Mom if she wants to go and stay with Dad, but it seems she's being petty and adamant that she's not going to keep him company. *Rolls eyes*

*ahem* I did say I'll quit shopping stuff *ahem* but LOOK AT THESE! THEY ARE SO PRETTY! I'm trying to look for information on how to care for  young pine sprouted from a pine cone, but all the information stop at "once it starts sprouting, congratulations!" So... after that it's just let it be? The shop guy said it should be kept in a humid environment, so lots of spraying at the leaves, but the online information I found says to keep them dry and water sparingly... huh. As for the succulents, I really was only looking for the Rainbow Elephant Bush (the top right one) because I saw a colleague have a big one and it was so pretty, looked almost like a tree! But I guess it wasn't the right season and I searched over 10 flower shops and couldn't find one, when finally I found a place that sold these saplings, but they were doing a buy 2 get 1 free, so I got the Common Houseleek (top left) and the Sunrise Succulent (bottom one, pinkish), that I did have before but killed it (overwatered it). Now I know. Keep it dry!

Been a while since I wrote about the plants... since I got a new addition today, I thought I'd make a plants post! All photos with no filter today, coz, plants!

This is my new plant! In Chinese it's called the 姬乙女 or 姬月季, I did some searching and found the English name to be Suehime, it sounds Japanese, and a little more digging I find out that it was cultivated in Japan in the 1990s. It's rather robust, strong resistance to diseases, and very easy care (plenty of sunshine and plenty of water). It can flower all year around too! This particular one I got is a little more expensive because of the stems and root, I thought it looked really cute, like a Bonsai. Supposedly I could have gotten just any regular shrub of the same plant at a cheaper price. But you know, packaging sells, and I fell for it.

More plants! )

Although we went to the cemetery in the morning (to beat the crowd) and only after lunch I went out with my Sis, I'm going to post the afternoon's photos first and then just dump the cemetery photos under a cut.

I swore I wouldn't buy yet another plant, so of course the first thing I did was buy another plant (hahaha). A mini maple tree leaf thing. Is this considered Bonsai? The lady said this shouldn't catch too much sun, so I probably need to relocate this elsewhere soon. I'm actually thinking to install 2 rows of shelves on my empty wall so I can put my plants so they are not directly in the sun, but so far the other ones seem to thrive in the sun...?

The main reason I went out today was to look at home-use printers. Dad wanted to print something but then I found out my printer was dead. About time. That printer has almost 10 years of age. The funny thing was, wireless printing wasn't a thing 10 years ago or so, so that printer did not have that function. I don't know what I did, but after hooking the printer up to the Airport (the Apple router or something), I managed to make that printer wireless printing! Anyway, printer identified, but I didn't buy yet, coz I was on foot. I told the guy I'll swing by later in the week, but he was super worried... I guess he really wanted to make the sale. So I asked if he's open tomorrow (supposed públic holiday) and he said yes, so I promised to go again tomorrow.

I also saw a pair of Nike Zoom Pegasus 37 running shoes that are OH SO PRETTY! White, with some green accents. It wasn't expensive, but I didn't buy them. My current running shoes are still good. I'd like to use them for another year before getting new running shoes.

We then made our way back, and then saw a new "drinks store" that must have opened today or just a couple days ago, coz they still had the congratulatory flower plaques around. This was a soy milk tea base drink with a twist - it is served with a skewer of mochis. This brand is pretty hot recently and I keep seeing people posting about this drink on Facebook and Instagram... We decided to hop on the bandwagon and join the fun! Wasn't bad. I wouldn't be opposed to having more of this in future... in moderation. It must be loaded in empty calories... these "bubble tea" type drinks are called 廢水 (waste water or rubbish water, I'll go for useless water, less yucky) because... they are just that, empty calories and does nothing for your health...

54C27FCA-739E-48D3-B999-EB7C5D06A616.jpeg

And today, I actually managed to get to the chestnut guy, although, now it's not a guy manning it anymore. It's a lady. Maybe his daughter or something. That guy must be old.

7494B84A-C0C3-4FBA-8800-78F9E744EAA4.jpeg

And now, cemetery photos, if you are interested! I find "western" cemeteries are very calming, unlike "Chinese" cemeteries which feel very daunting. The distinct difference in impression I get is, in "western" cemeteries, you focus more on "a place of rest", where as in "Chinese" cemeteries it's like "a place of haunting". This cemetery we went to is a "western" cemetery, so it's really pretty, if a bit cramped.

AEA5FFB9-97F0-45AA-8AFF-B225DE432ABF.jpeg

Since it's All Soul's Day tomorrow, Mom wanted to visit the cemetery today, just to get it done and beat the crowd tomorrow. (Does that actually work that way?) This is the cemetery chapel (go under the cut to see!):

Photos and some explanations on stuff )

Plants update

Remember the pumpkin plant I got? LOL

The "pumpkin" fruits dried up, now they look like sun-dried tomatoes LOL... and there was still a "green" fruit, but now it's turned orange and looks like pumpkin. A new flower sprouted out, but there are no bees to pollinate it, I wonder if I can do it myself with a Q-tip?

938D54FE-6B95-4690-90D2-916AC79ED148.jpeg

And then, the terrarium had one of the taller succulent grow so much it was cramped, so I decided to repot the entire thing. The terrarium itself looks terrible now, as I have no artistic sense to save my life...

FB98808D-07A4-4742-A2B5-C01C00899B33.jpeg

The cramped plant got replanted to outside of the terrarium... I need to use bamboo sticks to try to straighten them up again.

6CA1E1D6-87D3-49DC-A982-384FB62FD587.jpeg

The African Violet is growing new leaves, but I don't see flowers sprouting!
elusivek: (Default)
I've said it before that I have no green thumb... I still maintain that!
03D77D92-7EC4-4DEB-B40E-99454645E902.jpeg

My terrarium sphere had a pinkish succulent that... died (I think I over-watered it) and since then there has been that empty space. I always wanted to have a green-pumpkin lookalike succulent and decided to get one to fill up that spot, but alas, I can't measure anything by my naked eye and and I also did not think about roots... so pseudo-pumpkin was too big to go into the terrarium.

A41E1DB6-5B4F-4F17-8EE6-50375B77942A.jpeg

On the other hand, my nerve plant has been scaring me. Parts of it are getting white, I suspect those are dying, but the green ones are sprouting like crazy. I guess I have to re-pot it soon, but then I'll have nothing for the Little Prince pot. And I don't want to get yet another plant...

ImageCropPicker_C02FD4D1-4632-4B91-80B7-A12BA439F0C4.JPG ImageCropPicker_E79DE121-5C02-452A-A5A9-F285FEDD4922.JPG

But! I learn something new everyday! So I was walking past one of the new trendy plant-stores in town and saw these pumpkin lookalike plants! Solanum Pumpkins as it says on the tag, but after a bit of searching it's also called "Pumpkin on a Stick", "Pumpkin Tree", "Pepper Pumpkin", or for those partial to the Latin name, Solanum integrifolium. Fruits between September through November, so I chose one that still had a green fruit and a flower (in hopes to see it turn into fruit).

It's more a tomato or eggplant than a pumpkin, but very nice for decorative purposes. I just need to remember not to put it in the air con room as they prefer a warmer environment.

I forgot to mention, my Venus flytrap died; I was apparently giving it too much water; though I swear the woman that sold me that and my research said it needed water.

Then I had a small orchid, the flowers dropped naturally enough, but then the leaves fell off too, it was because it didn’t get enough sunlight to dry up the soil... and I had followed instructions to only water when the soul is very dry (like, a tiny bit of water, once a week) and to avoid direct sunlight.

Today I went with my sis to a plant shop, she wanted a succulent. I wanted to try but when I asked the shopkeeper, he said succulents aren’t exactly easy and told me to try this Nerveplant... Fittonia? He said, and I recount, “as long as this gets sunlight and water it’ll grow.” Okay. I believed him, and got this cute The Little Prince pot.

2D0D9A05-10D0-4806-9983-36BA8A6793BE.jpeg

I don’t really like The Little Prince, but this design is cute, reading a book. There was one other where he had the fox with him, but this design was more cute.

Now I’m reading up on the Nerveplant and apparently, yes it needs water but no direct sunlight. So I can’t put it at my window sill. At least, I have to put it away during the better part of the day.

I have no green thumb but I’ll try again!!!!
