elusivek: (yay! (Trucey))
hm.... by this time next week, I'll be in Taipei, waiting for my connecting flight to Austria! YES! I'm going to Austria again!! It's been 10 years since my last visit. I'm already confused by some of the new things going on, like, the Westbahnhof is not anymore the bahnhof to go to Linz and Salzburg. The Sudbahnhof has also been upgraded to become the Hauptbahnhof! So. Yeah. I've got a few key locations all marked and saved and then we can just go with the flow.

So today was the "Commemoration walk" for the "Upcoming Inauguration" of the "Macau Bridge". That entire sentence is made of a few jokes LOL. In Macau we used to have to one sole bridge connecting the Macau Peninsula to the Taipa Island. The bridge has an official name (Some Nobre Carvalho or something) but now we just call it the "Old Bridge". Then the second bridge built was called the "Friendship Bridge". I guess it was because it was just before the time of the Handover and so the Portuguese and Chinese were doing a series of "Friendship & Good relations" stuff, therefore it was called "Friendship". For a while the people commonly called it the "New Bridge". However, there is an area of Macau also colloquially known as "new bridge" 新橋 and while people will know what you are talking about (e.g. you won't go to the actual bridge for shopping) some people will tease in jest. And some years later, we got the new "Sai Van Bridge", which is probably because it starts off from the Sai Van area in Macau.
Untitled Untitled

This spiffy new bridge that's going to go in operations on Tuesday, is called "The Macau Bridge" lol. I read somewhere that the name "Macau Bridge" was also submitted for consideration when tender was open for the Sai Van Bridge, but I guess this time it's political, or something. This newest bridge has been joked that: it's been built too quickly, it will collapse. They required people to register to walk this event, and the registration page basically died every step of the way. 1. It didn't go live when it was supposed to go live. 2. When it got resolved, people had to receive an SMS code to verify but people were stuck waiting for the SMS. 3. When it got resolved, people were still not able to registere due to server error. 4. When it got resolved, very soon the quota was full so people couldn't register. So, some actually joked that they needed to limit the number of people as the bridge would collapse. Oh, also, the bridge has disco shiney lights at night, so people call it the "Rainbow Bridge". Ooops.
Untitled Untitled

So to commemorate the opening, we get to walk half way and back, because the area the bridge connects to "New City Zone A" 新城A區 (a reclaimed area intended for building housing) is actually not completed yet LOL. Tuesday is China National Day, so all these wee-waahs and hoo-haas (Horse and pony show?) is really to hype that up.
Untitled Untitled

And have I mentioned the red flags in town LOL. Every single lamp post hangs 2 flags of China. Someone in a "foreigners" chat group I'm in posted a video of him saying "How many red flags does your relationship have?" LOL.

This year is gonna be a couple of big things because it's the 75th year of the PRC and the 25th year of the Macau Handover (Macau SAR Establishment Day).

I got interviewed by the news station, and even in the questions, they had to make it political.

- Why are you here? Well, this is new, and I thought it fun to have a walk over.
- What do you think of the weather today? Well, you can say it's a beautiful day but admittedly it's a little too sunny to be out in the open, but I've got an umprella.
- What do you think about having this commemoration walk 2 days before the actual inaugration? Yeah, it's a fun experience so I'm here.

Yeah, I totally not-answered the third question intentionally haha!

Ugh, it's starting! Recently the reels showing up on my IG are those of people wondering "what is politically correct" when wishing Happy New Year now... is it Happy Chinese New Year? Happy Lunar New Year? So on and so forth. You know what. Who cares? The REAL greeting (for the Chinese) is, Kung Hei Fat Choi in Cantonese (or Gong Xi Fa Cai in Mandarin) means, Hope You Get Rich. It has nothing to do with the new year, maybe except sometimes they tag in "may you have a prosperous year to come" or something like that.

I'll continue to say CNY as I'm living in China territory and that's what I've been saying all through my life.

Maybe it's nothing new to people (and I have posted similar videos before), but I went to an Eye-dotting and Lion Dance ceremony today and I thought I'd share. It's really cute when they dot the eyes of the "lions" and then they start blinking their eyes and flicking their ears and then come alive and "dance". There's also something about feeding it lettuce and stuff which I can't explain too much, but I suppose it's some kind of play on word meaning (Lettuce 生菜 literally "Live Vegetable") and the Lion thanks you for the veggie and brings you good business for the year.

It was all very atmospheric, classical "Chinese drums and cymbals thing". My only small complaint is when they had to change the dancers (it's very tiring and they have to take turns to rest), they had the other "dancers" that didn't have the right pants on. At one point in time I saw the guy with the pink pants play the role of the green lion. So it was a green lion with pink legs haha. Well at least for the photos they didn't have that mix up.
Untitled

And I'm exploring out of my comfort zone! I went on a lunch with a group of strangers! We have a chat group going on, it's mostly foreigners, with some locals, and we decided to come out for some dim sum. After dim sum, part of the group decided to get some coffee, but we made a very bad decision and decided to go to downtown, and...
Untitled

We were amongst that horde of people. It was terrifying. Finally found a coffee place and I had a weird grey coffee. I thought it was a black sesame drink, but it's actually some kind of black caramel.
Untitled Untitled

As the saying goes, the third day of CNY is 赤口 and it's a day of arguments so usually people do not go visit friends on this day. But my group of besties decide to go out on this day every time. It's like we are tempting fate to see if we'd ever get in any fights. Along the way I decided to get a... pinwheel charm thingy? The "turning" of the pinwheel (I really want to call it a windmill) is supposed to help "turn your luck around"
Untitled Untitled

Oh yeah I also got these long time haven't seen "Dragon Beard Candy" 龍鬚糖. I'd describe it as... it's like cotton candy pressed together and wrapping ground peanuts in it.
Untitled

It was nice to laze around the place with the dogs.
Untitled

And since a friend convinced me to sign up for the 10k run in March, I'm now diligently training. I have some night runs, I have some morning runs.

Ah, so my Panasonic LUMIX G died. hm... if I want to be really technical about it, the display monitor's dead. I can still switch the camera on. I can still take photos on it. I just couldn't see the photos or click on the menu and change the settings from the screen. I'd have to take the SD card out, connect it to the phone or computer then read the photos there. So... if I really had the patience, I could probably still use that camera. But in preparation of my upcoming trips, and seeing my Hong Kong Dollars account having some extra "fun hobby money", I decided to get myself a new camera. Nikon Zfc. Ugh. But the size of it is double that of my old one. And it's got a kazillion functions. The display and UI on the Nikon is vastly different and it's getting a little tough to get used to. The easiest UI I find on these cameras is on the Canon. Let's see if I can get used to the Nikon in these few weeks.
Untitled

So far I've been mainly only using the automatic [A] setting and maybe the program [P] if there's a little more stuff I'd like to change. I still couldn't figure out where the control for the aperture and shutter speed are. I've found te exposure dial and after today's trip out I've gotten used to it.

Ah, don't preach to me that I can just read the user manual LOL. Who really reads the user manual? At least until there really is something to troubleshoot. I'm just gonna muck around the controls and see what is what and then get used to them.

Two nights ago, on the actual night of the "Mid Autumn Festival", people went out to light lanterns, have some kind of nighttime out door picnic and all that. I went up to the rooftop for some photo taking. I had a paper lantern too but it was too windy to take a good shot, and I hadn't figured out the best night time settings yet.

Soooooooo. The camera was fun. I still haven't totally figured out the camera. I should take it out a couple more times in the coming days. But here's this bonus tour around downtown Macau. Hope you enjoyed!

Maybe I'll need earplugs tonight. I wonder where they are!

Happy Sunday being a "Tourist" in town LOL.

So, on place and street names in Macau, it's a bit different from Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, the English and Chinese names are direct translations. Say for example, Garden Street is 花園街 in Hong Kong. In Macau, it's usually chaos. I have the example of Jardim da Flora (Flora Garden) in Portuguese, and... in Chinese it is... 二龍喉公園 (2 dragon throats garden). Look at the entrance of this place. There's this wall fountain, with 2 dragon heads, and the sprout where water comes out (like faucet), is called 水喉, and so... 二龍喉

We decide to take probably the World's Shortest Cable Car Ride. (That probably took the longest of a couple of years to be fixed one time after a breakdown)

Untitled

Old style cable car, no air con, being roasted alive.

Untitled

There's actually quite a bit to see and do in this garden, but I didn't come here much before.I didn't explore this garden much. There's a nickname of "Monkey Garden" because there used to be monkeys in here. It had monkeys, some birds, and a black bear (Bobo, saved from a restaurant, passed away a couple years back), but it was never officially called a zoo. So, I don't really know what it is.

Untitled

But, a lot of the enclosures are gone now, probably sent off to the main zoo in Coloane, and instead, there's space for kids for bikes, skates, and such.

Untitled

Had to orient ourselves for a bit as I hadn't been here for over 20 years.

Untitled

This was a fortress hill and such so there are 防空洞 which I just forgot the English name of... air raid shelter?

Untitled

Here be fake cannons. I don't know where I read/heard about that, but I heard the cannons in Macau were used to make the bell in the Big Ben.

Untitled

The typhoon signal signs. They hang this out when there is a typhoon.

Untitled

Chapel and Lighthouse. The Lighthouse looks so short here.

Untitled

No photos in the chapel, so I got this snapshot.

Untitled

Oh yeah, I didn't say what we were doing. The Guia Lighthouse is usually closed but they've opened the lighthouse for public visit yesterday and today, so we went. There was a queue. A kid asked, "why is it the marine department handling this tower up on a hill?" Well kid, a lighthouse is for MARITIME travel, and so, it's under the responsibility of the marine department 海事及水務局

On my daily dog walk with Frankie this morning, he took me (yes, he decides the route) up the Penha Hill and we walked past a fancy rich people housing estate. He wanted to walk into the non-gated part of it. I tried to liaise with him, explaining that it's just a dead end and we'd have to u-turn and walk back all the way up.

Frankie is a dog (frenchie at that) and doesn't understand any sort of negotiation, so, yeah, we walked down that road and had to u-turn back up. The bastard.

Then we went up the Penha Hill and walked the main road down the other way. We walked past this building that only now I noticed had the words SKYLINE on it. Did a quick internet search and found only one reference.

In the evening I asked Dad and he said it's who-and-who's home and that back then when he drove Father (didn't catch the name) he would drive him to this house (and another one of a local tycoon). He said it's just a residencial house, and that it's huge.

Here's a random old 1976 photo of the Vienna Hilton opening team soon after it opened. A friend of my Dad's on Facebook posted it, Dad isn't tagged but he's an easy find LOL. I just thought I'd archive it myself as well.
1976 Vienna Hilton

When Frankie the Frenchie is bored, he'll find whatever trouble to vex us all. Yesterday morning, a piece of cleaning cloth. And then it's a wrestling match
Untitled

Random photos of food... Dad sometimes takes the shortcut and just gets IKEA cinnamon rolls. Though, he doesn't follow the instructions on the packaging. The packaging says to just take out and bake it without defrosting. The rolls come out hard when you do it this way. Dad lets the frozen rolls defrost first, then bakes them, and they get all soft and nice and DELICIOUS. Kitty (yes, the cat's name, seriously) was curious. And the other dish with the beautiful sunny side up is the minchi, famous Macanese dish of minced meat and fried cubed potatoes. Usually served with white rice, but I have to minimize the carbs. But the deep fried cubed potatoes were just toooooooo gooooooooood.

Untitled Untitled

La-di-da! I started a tag for Frankie on IG. Since he's the one that decides his dog walking route, I sometimes take some photos of him at certain locations and post it on the dogs' IG, sort of introducing Macau as well, LOL.
Untitled

On this one he is sitting in front of the A-Ma Temple. Legend has it that when the Portuguese first arrived, they arrived at this "Inner Harbour" and this is where the first conversations of the Portuguese and Chinese was had. The Maritime Museum is also situated here, just across the plaza. Wiki Link because I'm lazy.
elusivek: (Default)
Just kidding, I will not write the whole post in Chinese LOL.

The title reads "Preparing for the (Chinese) New Year!"

So today is 年廿八, basically the "28th day of the 12th month". In Cantonese, there is a saying, 年廿八,洗邋遢 that means "spring cleaning" but word-for-word it's "cleaning up on the 28th" and practically, after this day, we shouldn't throw out rubbish anymore. But we don't really follow that religiously. The REAL day that we can't throw ANYTHING out is New Year's Day (this year it's on Sunday). So, you can't clean, can't dust, can't sweep, can't wash your hair, can't many things. I sometimes wonder if that means we shan't shower either, but anyway.
Untitled

I've set up my desk in the office with candy (Kit Kats!) and two apples. Apparently, as apples are called 蘋果 (peng guo), and the 蘋 (peng) sounds similar to 平 (peng) in 平安 (peng on), so, 2 apples are like 平平安安 (peng peng on on). In simplified Chinese, you can even see the similarity of 平 (peng) and 苹 (peng of "apple").

That was some special Taiwan version Kit Kat that I placed an order back in November and arrived now. I figured I'd just place it on my desk.

My ex-Boss sometimes called me "Kit Kat" (because I'm known as Kat around at work) so I kind of picked up the habit of bringing Kit Kats to work. Also, Kit Kats are easy souvenirs from Japan because there are like a kazillion diffferent flavors. Japan likes Kit Kats because the way you read it キットカット means something like "must (or will) win!" And students "must win" (pass) in their exams.

In fact, I received this for my birthday, LOL! Variety Party Box with 21 flavors of Kit Kats, there are 63 individual packets! The other Kit Kat on top is the Japan Post "Year of the Rabbit" Greeting card postcard (post chocolate?) that my friend got me as a new year gift. In Japan, their "New Year" and their "Chinese zodiac animals" start on 1-January, but in China, it's during the Lunar New Year. But to be very SPECIFIC, it doesn't start on (Chinese) New Year's Day either, it starts on what is called the Lichun 立春 the first day of Spring.
Untitled Untitled

So anyway. Tomorrow is officially the last day of work, at the end of the day we say 收爐! Which means "switching off the oven" (closing up the kitchen) and somehow the saying has been adopted by other industries as well, I have a reference link as well LOL. It's a 3-day public holiday, but since a day falls on a Sunday, we get a compensated day off, so it's back to work on Thursday. In mainland China and for Chinese culture, they usually close until the 7th day of the new year "人日" (everyone's birthday) and start work on the 8th day. And all Chinese New Year related festivities would finish by 元宵節 the 15th day which I think is also known as the Lantern Festival... and well, since I don't know much about that (for me holidays finish on the 3rd day and I'm back to work on the 4th LOL) so.... reference link here too!

Since the borders are opened, the Boss' driver from Hong Kong is coming over for a short break. We decided to meet up since we've only met once or twice over 3 years ago. We're going for a quick 飲茶 Yum Cha, or Dim Sum, and the Boss is paying (ha!) I should plan a trip to Hong Kong as well, just to know how Hong Kong looks now, but, I don't have any pressing matters that I have to attend to in Hong Kong.

This year I might go for the firecracker fair to have a look.... maybe... or maybe not... I don't know. I'm always so undecided about the firecracker fair. They say you burn firecracker to "chase/scare the bad luck away" but to me it's just "burning money." Hm........... To be decided.

Counting Sheep

Thursday, 22 December 2022 23:21
elusivek: (sakura)
The new "buzzword" in town is Sheep. There are sheep everywhere. In the past, Mama Sheep would warn Baby Sheep to not go out, because the Big Bad Wolf is out there. Nowadays, Mama Wolf warns Baby Wolf to not go out, because there are Sheep Out There.

Untitled

LOL.

In Cantonese, the word "Sheep" 羊 is synonymous homonymous (sounds the same) with "(testing) Positive" 陽. I'm not sure about Mandarin though. The above image is in simplified Chinese, so I guess it carries the same in Mandarin.

I mentioned the other day the government has suddenly embraced life with Covid?

From the sidelines, it looks like a suicide crash. There's no need to report your health anymore. Even if you are positive, you are allowed to go out and go to work. "Location" check in is not required anymore, except for to government offices and hospitals.

With the rigid control before, with the sudden laissez-faire attitude, the spaceship is going to crash soon.

A LOT of people are getting positive. Heck, my Sis' workplace has all the operations staff positive, so no one with experience is there to do the hands-on things like dog handling, cleaning pens, and the like. My office started the day yesterday with 3 admin staff (me included) and the day ended with 2 admin staff.

Our family Christmas Party will most likely be cancelled because out of the 6 "nucleus families", 4 already got positive. It's just ours and family "V" that's still negative.

I see on Facebook posts on how whole families get positive together. Some more light-hearted posts are about how everyone BUT the youngest child is positive, so they have to rely on the youngest child.

It's a pandemonium.

And so, I have photos to show! What kind of segue is this LOL?

The dogs and cats wanted to go out and lie in the sun for a bit, so I had to stand there to look over them. Nutmeg's also out here but out of the frame of the photo. Harley (the white cat) has the naughty tendency to jump up to the 6th floor and then wander, so I need to just sit there and look at them.

Untitled

I got tired standing around so decided to sit on the floor, then Frankie comes over to snuggle up. What a shoe-shiner!

Untitled

Oh, before all that, I did start the morning with some Yoga. All the while, Menina was just looking and complaining. She's getting more brazen and wants someone to be in bed with her. I guess it's somehow related to her getting blind? So she just wants some human with her?

Untitled

That's all the types of cookies we made this year. Yum, yum, yum, and yum! They are all yum! Even the gingerbread's good!

Untitled

I thought I ate too many cookies as we were preparing some cookie baggies, so I wanted to go out for a run, but Frankie was rather energetic as well, so oh well, I went for a long walk with him. Pretty nice day, but Winter is seemingly over for us, LOL.

Untitled
elusivek: (Coffee Break)
One item off my bucket list LOL.

It was glorious!

I arrived early (6.30pm), in hopes that we'd get done with the dinner early enough to get home and walk the dogs. My internal target was to be home by 8.30pm.

Untitled

Of course, the next time I look at my watch, it is 10pm already hahaha. Finally seeing a Glühwein, I ordered one to try. Didn't like it, and wasn't what I've been looking for (a Czech honey-wine kind of thing). My friend ordered a Hot Toddy, she didn't like it either.

Untitled Untitled

We were originally a group of 4. One of them mentioned about her co-worker getting covid, so another friend (the scaredy cat) immediately said she's not going. So I invited another friend, and then that one friend that mentioned about a co-worker getting covid said she'd feel guilty if we somehow got covid through her (despite her confirming she was negative), so... it was just 3 of us.

The short ribs was great!

Untitled

The sausage platter was impressive!

Untitled

And the Cheese Fondue was amazing. I'm glad I went for it... at least once in my life. Though I think I won't be going again, not that it isn't good (it was very good) but, it's just not the kind of thing to be constantly eating.

Huh. Who would have thought. They hoisted the T8 this morning at 7am.

There's not even a drop of wind out there now (it's almost 10am).

I guess they wanted to keep people at home but can't mandate another lockdown, so took the chance to hoist a T8 so people would stay put? Is that too tame for a conspiracy theory?

If the T8 goes down before 2pm then we have to go back to work for the afternoon... if the T8 stays after 2pm then no more work for the day.

An eclectic post

Tuesday, 9 August 2022 23:44
elusivek: (Bike)
Yes... this is going to be very eclectic, but my brain is going at a mile a minute LOL. There's a typhoon now and while on the map it shows it's nearer to Macau than Hong Kong, it seems like Hong Kong is making a big deal of it. We'll see. I had to call the attention of the office girls as they were all wishing for the typhoon to hit to get a free holiday and I just reamed them with "remember Typhoon Hato? Do you want that to happen again?" and that shut them right up. Anyway, this is not about the typhoon.

On Sunday we decided to try a Korean barbeque place that did takeaways. I had a full head of questions, how do you takeaway a korean barbeque?

In a nice thermos bag.

Untitled

Everything in nice boxes. Charcoal in a tin foil tray, elevated so it doesn't burn the table cloth. It must have been some special charcoal as it was super easy to light up, didn't produce a lot of smoke, and when we were done we submerged the barbeque tray in water and the charcoal dissolved....? So yeah. Fun little gimmick, but tons of wastage, so we probably won't be ordering again.

Untitled Untitled

Oh yeah I picked up the pottery stuff I made! Here's my supposed tea cup but turned into sake-cup size and filled with Irish Baileys instead LOL!

Untitled

During the usual dog walk on Sunday, I saw a type of weed that had a puffy head, plucked one to play with Nutmeg. She had heaps of fun!

Untitled

Whereas when I was in the bathroom preparing to shower, a peeping tom Harley was there giving me a look!

Untitled

So... today that high-ranking colleague again invited us for lunch. I know, I preach about following rules yet he opened 2 bottles of red... it was pretty good too. I usually dislike red wine. This one's nice.

UntitledUntitled
UntitledUntitled

Oh, and I did want to write about this. I wrote in an earlier post about it being the 7th month and the gates to hell are opened and all that? This is the time when people would burn offerings. They just burn stuff in the streets, or at the site of accidents, or wherever, I suppose. All's better nowadays because there was a campaign a few years back urging people to put out the fire before leaving.

Untitled

Though I think a new campaign needs to be designed - do not leave food out either. Some people use like packaged cookies and I suppose that's okay-ish, but those that leave fruits and cooked food out open... it's just a lure for rats, right? And maybe stray dogs .

UntitledUntitled
elusivek: (Coffee Break)
... and they extended the not-a-lockdown lockdown for another 5 days. So next week is another week of that crap.

A dog has died due to choking and was living in a "red zone" building. A red zone building is, the building is on total lockdown because someone in there tested positive, so the entire building is locked down. No going out, no going in. The dog choked. The owners couldn't take the dog to the vet. They called for help, help arrived 2 hours later. The Municipal people came to collect the corpse.

Hearing the story this way, of course I'm upset. But. Come on. What did the dog choke on? You gave him chicken bones, right?

The press conference is going on right now and they said they'll extend this not-a-lockdown another 5 days. Another 5 days of dogs not allowed to go out.

Our dryer is busted. The door handle broke, so if we close it, we can't ever open it again. And I really needed to wash my bedsheets - Menina has some ear trouble so my bed gets dirty very easily, when she rubs her head on my sheets. Then I remembered - we have a common-use rooftop! So I went up there to hang the washed sheets.

Untitled

And apparently, in the morning, it's quite fresh up there. There was a constant breeze and the water tower was just at the right place to cast a shade on this side of the roof. So I stayed up there for a bit. I didn't realize that in terms of pure distance, the Penha church is so near to my building. And also... just how many illegal structures there are!

Untitled

Colloquially, there are 2 kinds of buildings. "Western buildings" are usually buildings over 5 floors high and have elevator access; these usually have a "management company" to maintain the building. "Oriental buildings" are usually buildings up to 5 floors, and have no elevator access. In "Western buildings", the roof is a common area. In "Oriental buildings" the roof belongs to the top floor homeowner(s). If there are more than 1 unit per floor, then the roof is divided up according to the floor plan below and belongs to each of the homeowners. My building is 11 floors high (there's a mezzanine floor, and this is the rooftop, so I suppose I'm around at height of around the 13th floor level). All these buildings we see are shorter ones, they are mostly "Oriental buildings", and the illegal structures, are the aluminium tops. Yep. The whole area consists of illegal structures. And the government won't do anything about it. Because if they do something about one, they have to do something about all. If a neighbour complains about one neighbour, all neighbours suffer as well. A beautiful status quo.

Untitled

I am not sure if this is a real message, but my friend sent me a screenshot of supposedly from the Zhuhai Psychiatric Center and I laughed my arse off. "Dear Citizens, If during the quarantine period, you find yourself talking to the plants and trees, there is no need to panic and call us. You will need to seek medical attention and call us only when the plants and trees start replying you. Thank you."

oh boy. oh boy.

I'm jobless. LOL. Just joking! But I have no workplace to go to tomorrow.

Just. Something happened today. And they've quarantined off my office building. The lucky thing was, I just so happened to have gone to another property to look at the arrival of a big piece of... cargo. So when they sealed off my office building, I was out of it.

Guess I'm lucky that I wasn't stuck inside?

But tomorrow I'm out of an office location.

This is no fun. I really dislike working from home. oh gosh. My Mom's gonna be unbearable. The cleaner is coming tomorrow, so Mom is going to ask for this and that and this and that every 3 minutes.

I need to keep my ears to the news to know how long they are going to close off the building.

It's Saturday. Still in lockdown. With Typhoon "Chaba" visiting us. It's strong enough to be a #8 signal. So I'm just holed up in my room.
Untitled

I wonder if a Flickr video embed works the same? Anyway. Here's a trial video; if it's not a video, then I know Flickr doesn't do that, haha!

Untitled

Ah, and the local gov't wants all residents to do these Rapid Antigen Tests (home tests), and yes, the government has provided these test kits too. I've been lucky and got this red boxed one, but there are complaints out there that some residents got some other brands that had: missing swab, missing "carrier liquid", missing test strip, false positive test results, and all that... so now the government wants us to take a photo of the test result with the box packaging. I usually include my watch to help state the time. The photo has to be uploaded onto the health code platform.
Untitled

As it's typhoon #8, even the test centres are closed, the city is simply just... stagnant. However, Dad walked out for a bit just now and announced a very important news: The Chinese bakery is open. Good! Then I can get some toast bread, LOL!
elusivek: (Coffee Break)
With the way the local government is handling this new wave of the covid pandemic, one would think the apocalypse is upon us. Just announced on the news - Macau has, to date, at time of writing, 451 confirmed cases since February 2020. That of course, doesn't sound much, but up until last week or so, it was an accumulated total of less than 90 confirmed cases. The sudden jump is indeed a little scary, but the countermeasures the government has taken has also been crazy.

I've now done 3 PCR tests, and 3 self-home tests. On 1-July, they are going to implement more requirements.

So, at the other side project I work for, we have an "off-site" office that is located in a property that is considered a "gaming venue". The government had mandated that "gaming venues" would require for the staff to have a within-48hours negative PCR test result, and a daily rapid antigen test with negative result.

This off-site office, I had already since 2 months ago asked if they could make arrangements to relocate the staff (there's like, some 10 or so staff left in that office, and it's a big space). We were paying a lot in rent, cleaning, and overheads, which would have been fine if the office were full, but with just 10 staff, it really wasn't ideal. However, since these expenses fell to my department, nobody felt the urgency to relocate the people.

So now with this new government mandate, I pushed again, but asked directly at the management. "Since the staff will have to do these paid tests and home tests, will the company reimburse these expenses to them or are staff expected to bear these themselves?"

They were still hemming and hawing saying there's no place to relocate the staff to. They agreed that these expenses should be covered by the company, but seemed reluctant to actually pay for these... Then my boss called me and asked me if the old office is still available. "Nah, you asked us to move out, we moved out, and the office has been reinstated to bare shell status". But then I added, "oh, but that I know of, in this-and-this department, they actually do have spare desk space, but they were hoarding it because they weren't sure if their staff needed to work in 2 offices. Since this is a temporary measure, I think we should all make the effort. Boss, don't tell them I told you this."

So my Boss made an off-hand request that "those 10 staff should be relocated". Oh wow. Arrangement confirmed within one morning, those bastards. So no more need to expect to make those test expenses. It means that in future if I need to put my foot down on anything, I'd have to ask my Boss to say that.

But all joking aside, this is going to be tough... not just paying for the tests, but for daily getting stabbed up through the nose, ugh.

However, if this goes on, it's true, Macau won't die because of the pandemic, instead, Macau will die because of the economic atrophy. Restaurants can only serve takeaways, salons, gyms, public parks, facilities, all closed. Banks, government offices, all closed. Banks! BANKS!

My workplace has also implemented "use up your paid time off" scheme and "use up your future paid time off" as well. But still expect us to work from home. Huh. I'm just going back to the office every day, maybe leaving a little earlier than usual. There's no one in the office anyway, so there are no crowds in the office. My Boss still expects me to work at home anyway. And I can't work from home... if my Mom sees me, she automatically thinks I'm free so wants me to do this and that and that and this and breaking my concentration when I'm doing some spreadsheets or studying figures. So really. I really dislike work from home.... maybe if I lived alone, then I'd enjoy it better.

I'm still lucky my company is still giving out the bonus this year. Technically, this bonus they are giving out is last year's annual bonus... they just cut it in half and "spread it out" to give out twice a year. This will probably be the last bonus we are getting, because, there's just no business going on. In fact, if it were just me, I'd understand if there's no bonus now. But the people of Macau are so coddled and entitled. It's ridiculous. "No bonus? Send in a complaint to the Labour Department! The government should give us the difference!"

(an oversimplified summary but a summary nonetheless: Macau's government is mostly, say 80%? Funded by the casino gaming tax. Got a good fat wallet now. But if casinos have no business and no money, the government eventually will have no money too.)

Guess i was lucky coming back on Friday. Apparently, things happened. Someone tested positive, and they went to a party or something, and then went to a banquet and whatnot. And now there are around 30 positive cases... and so... the city locks down again.

While the rest of the world seem to be taking Covid in stride and aiming for herd immunity, here it's like "THERE MUST BE NOOOOOOOOO CASES!"

Sending out messages like this just creates a scare, I suppose.

But, the funny side of this is... I know exactly whose party it was, and I know exactly who then went to the banquet and blah blah. Macau IS so small.

The Friday party was held by an ex-colleague, the party was for her daughter's 5th birthday. She's someone with some background (parents are some big shot, I suppose), so she's like somewhat of a minor celebrity or a known person here. One of the party goers is the owner of a restaurant that recently got to be rather popular.

(I've blacklisted the restaurant since last year as they were a cocky bunch of a-holes. It was early, 6.30pm-ish, the restaurant was empty, there was no sign about a private event, so my friend and I wanted to go and have a drink then go home. But they were all like, "do you have a reservation? You can't come in" okay. Come in we won't. EVER!)

So. That's the big news from this side of the world. Still going to be stuck.

Offices are advised to close for a couple days to avoid people getting together. But I'm still going to work. There's stuff to do and work to get done. The other admins will happily take the day off anyway, so there will be no crowds in the office. Besides... my A/C is dead, so going back into the office lets me enjoy a chill air for a bit. What I have to think of is lunch. Only takeaways, so I'll probably not get lunch from the hotel coffee shop. Maybe I'll try another of those bento boxes. We'll see.

It's Sunday, so it's the family lunch day. One of my cousins decided to go visit a stationary store that's actually very near my home, but it's just off by another way (that goes further away from the city center) so I don't normall go that way. My friend had told me about it before, and I had thought about visiting this stationary shop before, but I just never got around to it.

I figured since my cousin has decided to make the trip there, I should just go ahead with her, as knowing myself so well, I'm sure I'd probably forget about it and never go there if left to my own devices LOL.

And... it was an amazing little shop! It's SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY kind of amazing. All those ink! Fountain pen ink! Stamp pads and stamping inks! STICKERS! Wax for sealing letters! I sunk a good amount of money on postcards (Postcrossing, here I come!). And then there was a pretty nifty book. I did say I've got too many books, but I feel like this is the kind of book that is actually good for collecting and using.

You read that right, that's using, not reading. This is an adventure book. As it's written by a Japanese author, this book is trilingual: English, Chinese, and Japanese. Apparently, I'm to one day hang around town with the book and follow the prompts and see where I end up - even though I'm local. I suppose it would be interesting to do this in a place where you're visiting, but I'd be worried about getting lost.

Anyway, after this, we went along that street down and passed by a small little shop that's got this vegan or go green movement. I got myself this chocolate hazelnut spread. So, practically a home-made Nutella thing. It was a little too liquid, so I mixed it up some more and put it into the fridge and will see how it does later. Taste-wise though it was good, not as sweet as Nutella, so that's a plus!

Now I'm just home resting and this snuggle bug is wanting company. Okay, you kind lie down here quietly with me. And there was a jingle of keys, and my Sis comes back home, and there he goes flying out to greet her. Bye doggie. LOL!

恭喜發財!

Nowadays you will probably read Gong Xi Fa Cai! (Mandarin Chinese)

In Hong Kong you'd see Gung Hey Fat Choy! (English literation of Cantonese Chinese)

In Macau it's Gong Hei Fat Choi! (Portuguese literation of Cantonese Chinese)

So today, or technically yesterday (it's past midnight) was the last day of the lunar year. We got to get off work at 4pm. I went to the flower market 行花市, it's auspicious to do that just before the New Year. It's usually just stalls and stalls of flowers. The popular plant at this time would be orchids. I went for a lookaround.... I really wanted to buy one but I've already got 2 orchids at home, but they haven't flowered yet... So I suppose I have to be patient.

I don't know this couple, but I didn't want to stand in line and wait, there were... many people, it'd take a long time if I waited. It's the year of the tiger, so there's all these orange tiger dolls everywhere.

In recent years though, there's been a surge in stalls that sell crap LOL. Handheld wind.... what's them mini windmills called? I lost the word temporarily. A lot of tiger dolls.

Ah, the god of fortune 財神 was also hanging around LOL

In the end, I only bought this thing shaped like a fish. It's an incense that I put it above a heat source to let it disperse the aroma. There was a very cute tiger one, but I knew my incense burner was a narrow dish (my friend made this Totoro incense burner herself!) so I got the fish. I'm actually lucky it actually fits, as I wasn't sure it would fit.

On the way home, we pass by the Cathedral. Only here I suppose. I'm all for the melding of cultures, but I still think putting Chinese lanterns in a Church is wrong somewhat... but what do I know?

It will be my cousin's birthday in a couple days, and my sis had to get a present for her, so we went to this department store. Mom called and said she wanted some "sweets" (it's custom to have a Chinese New Year box filled with sweets), but she specifically only wanted the sweed candied coconut flakes. Well. There was no choice. Everything's empty LOL. I happened to spy on some vegan-friendly chocolate and a plant-based chocolate pretzel thingamajig (I don't believe in that kind of a packing it's pretzels inside).

Dinner we had some turnip cakes. I don't need chilli to go with my turnip cake, but I just happened to look at the jar at the dining table. It's been expired for over a year! The parents say it's always in the fridge so it's fine. Well. Indeed. They haven't needed the doctor's anyway.....

I got a new dash cam (first one ever) and I had fun playing around. This is probably the only time I’m doing this as……. It’s so much work to edit. It was around 45-minutes, I sped up the video speed (so it looks like I’m driving very fast, but city speed limit is 60km/h so I’m definitely under that), and cut off a few spots where it’s just waiting at the lights and car wash. The final clip is around 15-minutes

It’s a silly thing for fun. I’ve added a few comments and landmark locations in case any one’s interested :-)

Long Weekend

It was a looooonnnnnggg weekend for me. Today is a public holiday (All Soul's Day), and it's on a Tuesday, so I decided to take Monday off as well. Four-day weekend was nice. For the soap class, since the lady is doing "compensation" classes for us (since the pandemic scare last week had everything put on hold) so the schedule had changed. It was fun :D

Spent the morning at Starbucks writing postcards!

Oh, I went with my friends to a new place called The Nookery. It's really a take-out cafe in a Harry Potter-esque or castle library interior. Definitely Instagrammable. Their special though, is not coffee, but hot chocolate. The pull to try out the place was because of the touted 100% dark chocolate on the menu. HOWEVER, we were duped. They said they "ran out" today. I don't believe them. I asked when they will restock, the guy said "tomorrow". Hard to believe.

Definitely not decoration easily seen in this part of town. Maybe in The Londoner (a new-ish casino/hotel/mall complex). It's cute.

I like this under-the-stairs nook/shrine thing they did. And they had really rare and artistic books. Gashlycrumb Tinies! Tim Burton Octopus Boy, and some weird artwork too.

It was packed. Apparently it takes forever to make their hot chocolate (they really melt a chocolate block and not cocoa powder)

Hard at work to fulfill orders. The Hot Chocolate wasn't bad, but really, wasn't anything to tell home about. I was interested because of their advertised 100% dark chocolate, but they didn't have it, and instead I had a 70% dark chocolate. Hm. Maybe I should have gotten the 50% chocolate with a shot of Baileys or Kahlua instead. I dunno. But I don't think I'm going there again... unless it's guaranteed I get the 100% chocolate, LOL.

As the government mandated temporary closure of beauty salons and nail parlors, I had ordered some nail stickers/fake nails on Taobao. They mucked up part of my order, and as an apology sent me a couple extra of random designs. Since it's my first time using, I thought I'd use the freebies up first, because my nail is not 100% flat and smooth. There is still a thin layer of the gel previously.

I got the drill/gun thing to thin out the old gel, but there's still a thin layer, so it's not totally smooth, and I figured anything I put on will very quickly fall off. So, I used the random freebie. How cute is this LOL. I dislike my nails being this long, but I suppose it's good practice? The package says it should hold between 5-7 days. Let's see how my rough handling will keep it hahaha!
