A debt-ridden wedding planner inadvertently becomes a successful funeral planner. However, he must convince a traditional Taoist priest of his legitimacy to continue operating in the field.

= + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = + = +

Oh, it's been awhile I watched a Canto movie in full. I wanted to watch this one due to my side obsession with mortuary/funeral homes. I guessed as much that the overall message of this movie would be similar to that of the Japanese movie おくりびと Departures. What I did not expect, was that I practically guessed key plot happenings, twists, heck, I scored exactly to the talking script. Predictable? Or I'm so smart haha. See I scored too where the "sales" guy sort of had an epiphany and decided to learn more about the funerary procedures.

Before going to watch the movie, so many people told me this is a super tearjerker and to bring lots of tissues and they cried right from the first scene to the end.

ugh... sorry? I'm only empathetic to dogs and cats? I dunno. Yes, I can see the heart-tugging parts, and I get the intention, but sorry, it's not doing it for me in the tears department. Even the kid part.

Tiny bit of spoiler where I wholeheartedly agree: so this "Breaking Hell" dance is done where the priest breaks some tiles signifying you breaking the "cap" (or door) of hell thus freeing the soul for reincarnation. So the "sales" guy says, "The priests free the dead souls. Us sales people free the living souls. There is hell within the living world."

As for actors, for context (I don't know much about them), Dayo Wong ("sales" guy) is a stand-up comedian. I personally think he can't act. I've seen a couple other movies of his before, and... he can't act, sorry. That's all I have to say about him... oops.

But overall this was a cool watch, even though I'm familiar with some "imported" Chinese funerary customs, I have never seen an actual full Taoist ceremony. If I have choose between the two though, Departures is still my favorite.

SCMP review.

A story of Haw and a young man. Haw is a young puppy, who can’t howl. The young man has a timid personality.

Tamio Akanishi (Kei Tanaka) works at a public office in Yokohama. He is going through one of the worst periods of his life, because he fiancee broke up with him. One day, his boss tells him to take care of a big dog with white hair, which was abandoned by his owner. Tamio Akanishi begins to live with the dog. The dog doesn’t bark and only makes a sound that sounds like "haw." So, Tamio Akanishi names the dog Haw. While living together, the connection between Tamio Akanishi and Haw gets deeper. Tamio Akanishi now can’t think of his life without Haw, but ...

Went to the movies last night. When I asked my Sis if she wanted to go (coz once upon a time Mom had said "your Sis has no friends so you have to include her in your outings". Yeah. I don't see her including me in her outings) and she said no, I went ahead and went alone.

I didn't realize this was such a new movie. I always thought we'd be pretty slow in getting non-blockbusters.

Welllllll. First things first. Very Important. Don't worry. THE DOG DOESN'T DIE. There be spoilers here.

It's light hearted. It's funny-ish. The kind words stop here LOL.

I don't understand the breakup. So. Your "bigger crush" that married is now divorced... so you dump your fiance? How'd you work out you'd have a chance this time? This to the girlfriend. I thought that excuse a bit flimsy. The Boss too. Announcing everything immediately? Geez.

Haw is a nice dog. The dogs are the best. Nice doggieeeee. How he lost the dog was stupid. Let this be a story for everyone. LEASH YOUR DOG!

So the dog gets transported to god-knows-where (sorry not well-versed in the geography of Japan)... and the dog makes his way home. Sure. Yeah. Haw hardly looks scared all the way. And how does the dog know the exact way back? That might be some innate dog ability, sure, but still I find it improbable. It's not like there's a scent for him to follow. And all the way nobody actually caught him and checked the microchip?

So Haw adventures all over (or maybe just along the coast) and on the way meets verious people. Don't know how each and every single one of them don't think to take him to the vet or whatever local entities there are to check the microchip.

The most absurb is the convent. Nice touch to make St Francis (has to be of Assisi) the patron saint there. I would make a fuss if the Mother Superior had actually kicked the dog out. LOOK AT YOUR PATRON SAINT! How the nuns thought the dog's bark sounded like "Francesco" is a mystery to me. His bark is one syllable. Francesco is three, but in Japanese pronunciation it makes it like five-ish syllables.

Finding his original owner there... jackpot? Then her abusive bf or husband comes and slices everyone and pushes down an old nun and then drives away, DOESN'T crash into the bicycling kids but the car flips over (WT actual F?) and suddenly, Haw does a Lassie and saves the man from the burning car. (I was WTFing so much in this part, WTF).

Finally he gets home, only for the owner to have moved out, and a new family of mom and son move in. So Haw stays with this family. Finally meets up with Tamio over a year later, and Tamio decides to let Haw stay with the new family and not say anything about the dog being his first.

I know, I know, he wanted to do good by the boy. BUT THE DOG WALKED ALL THE WAY BACK FOR YOU, dumbass.

There are two sides to the movie though, while Haw's out there making his way back, we see Tamio going into a slump then picking himself up again. From being timid and shy, to opening up like giving out flyers to look for the lost dog, to retaliating to colleagues ("it's just a dog, you can get a new one"), and later on helping out at the shelter. Bonus for there having a Frankie clone of a French Bulldog... and she got adopted!

So, Tamio also had a journey in his own way.

I liked that the movie was trying to evoke these touchy-feely emotions, but the actual incidents (especially of the dog's) was just too whimsical.

So, a fun, light hearted, maybe not exactly happy-ending, but the dog doesn't die movie.

Eternally Younger Than Those Idiots 君は永遠にそいつらより若い (2021)
Link for movie info

Again, I'm trying not to give out too much about the story... but this movie is so typical, as with Japanese movies (for me). There's that deeper, hidden message that I can't quite grasp.

There are funny moments (like the guy that's... having problems being especially well endowed), there are sad parts, there are mystifying parts.

I had a nice surprise seeing my childhood favorite game Puyo Puyo being played in-movie.

(Potential spoilers without saying too much)
The mini detective mystery segment was rather touching... like the whole fiasco of Homone's was really just so that people would notice what was going on with Shogo. I also still don't get the mystifying part where Inogi shows up for a second in Shogo's room. So was Inogi just an illusion?

Interesting while it lasted, but I don't think this movie is for people who like to have a very linear storyline and have a definite conclusion.

I was pleasantly surprised by the movie. I really enjoyed it. I think I'll probably enjoy the book as well.

I'm not really a movie buff, so I have no comments about the casting and the actors/actresses. Except that I didn't know Sylvia Chang was actually Taiwanese. I always thought she was a Hong Kong actress.

What I have are some silly thoughts:

I enjoyed the languages used all-around. Cantonese, English, and the tad bit of Japanese. However, the Cantonese spoken was a bit stilted, I thought. Also the older Frederick had very weird dialogue LOL. It was like those forced plot device to help the reader (or in a movie, the audience) to understand what's going on.

I sort of suspected, not the plot, but the "secret" when Aritomo said "I cannot leave Yugiri"... and then after the assault of the Chinese communists at the English House, and when he returned to Yugiri to continue working on the garden, I knew for the fact that what I suspected was correct. (And I was).

The movie also ended in the nice ambiguous way that makes you think about it for some time.

I'm putting the book in my to-read list, though now a quick glance through, I see there's quite a bit of changes.

Neat little movie, and it gets more interesting as I research about the movie and the actors.
Featuring an actual (legally) blind person? Interesting.

However, the actual movie fails to address the MOST IMPORTANT DETAIL.

What about the cat!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??????????????????????????????

Lazy night

My friend said she'd be busy tonight so I didn't book for badminton. Nice to have a lazy night. But even on a lazy night, I did quite a lot. I did another unit of the German course I'm going through. I've now decided to copy out the new vocabs by hand as this way it helps me to remember them.

I had already written in my journal earlier today, so I didn't have to do anyting tonight. So after my shower I did a bit of pampering, did first a clay mask, then did another hydrating mask. All the while finally using my Netflix subscription to watch The Secret Life of Pets 2, LOL. It was hilarious. I have so many questions hahahaha. Don't the people of New York see wovles around? Don't they find it strange that a bunny is riding a scooter? Why does the cat lady go out with ALL THE CATS????????? LOL It was a nice light-hearted show. Oh, and LOL I loved Plan B LOL

I'm now just letting Netflix loop a show and I'm not paying much attention to it. But it should be interesting. And I really should use my Netflix subscription more often.

I took some time to actually clean up my "writing desk/piano" today. Have a lookie!

I've cleaned out the level of the shelf that extends from the desk. I figured I wasn't using much of the colouring things, so I relocated them on the lower level. Still reachable, but out of the way. Instead, I'm displaying all of my beautiful writing inks. It now looks a lot more neat and well put together. My drinking bottles also have a space in the shelf, so the piano is more empty now and I technically have better access to the piano now. Hopefully I do make use of that and try to take some more time to practice once in a while.

I still have that headache from this morning, I took some painkillers, didn't help, kipped for a bit, didn't help.... so now I guess I'll just call it an early night and hopefully tomorrow the headache is gone.

Weekend!

(Decided not to wait for the Friday Five)

I have a long weekend as 1-Oct is China National Day.

And I made these few nights movie nights. Well, not really. Just 2 consecutive nights of JP movies.

Friday night I went with friends to watch “When I get home, my wife always pretends to be dead.” It was an interesting movie. Like many JP movies I know, the “secret” is kept a secret and open to the viewer’s interpretation. The myriad of ways that the wife stages her death are hilarious, and now I want a fake crocodile with a sun hat. Haha!

Saturday night I watched “blank-13.” I was expecting it to be a tearjerker but it wasn’t (at least for me). Watched due to a friend’s recommendation but I didn’t see the charm. Well... my friend had some stakes in that as she was the one to recommend this movie be brought in. She’s a big fan of the main male character (the son). Well anyway, “favor” done so I’ll leave it at that.

Before the movies, they showed some trailers and I’m contemplating watching “the extraordinary journey of Fakir” (or some name along the names of that). The trailer made it look very funny. There were a few other movies but they looked boring (to me) but I guess they were showcasing some big name director or other (Alice Rohrwacher?) that won awards at the Cannes.

Oh and yeah that cinema I went to don’t show hit blockbuster movies.

http://www.cinematheque-passion.mo/en/Home

That’s where they showed Loving Vincent (the Van Gogh painting movie) and many other indie or more artistic movies.

I think it’s good to have such cinemas, but admittedly they may make less business than the ones showing blockbusters, so hopefully it’s here to stay!

Right! Just came home from that. I'm pleasantly happy by the movie - it kept the general plot as the book, but it had its own twist. The coupling was different, the character ages had some changes, the "annoying" character was another one. I'm not sure if the movie closed with reference to the book (I didn't read book 3 yet, but my bet is its different).

However, I'm a little sad that it's not up to par to what I would expect from a Tim Burton movie. Some of the acting's abysmal, and the animated parts felt pretty cheap. Some scenes didn't match/connect to each other. Other than that, it was a pretty good watch.

And of course my friend and I laughed our arses off at the split second cameo LOL.

Life has been rather hectic the past few weeks, but oh, yesterday, Saturday, was some semblance that my life is still good.

The Twelve Nights movie-documentary I mentioned (it's just the previous post) is part of the Macau International Film Festival. So... of course I would go for more.

It's only a pity I missed the one from Japan, R-100, I have a gut feeling that it is a tremendously funny one. Something about a guy joining a club without knowing that it's some kind of kinky S&M club... or something... of course I have a trailer to share (no subtitles though). I think R-100 has the reference to the R-18 rating system... so I guess I have to live until 100 to watch this movie? heh...

Where I missed one movie, I yesterday went to watch two. Wow.

Aurelie Laflamme (France) - felt like watching some kiddo movie and yes, this was entertaining. Not planning to read the books though, even if they get translated to English.

Witching and Bitching (Spain) - I'm not sure about this one... it started off OK but by the middle of it it started to get way too crazy... are Spanish films all so crazy? Characters tend to get off-tangent in their rants and talk about really nonsense and useless things and... I just don't get it... Well, I got the storyline and all, I don't get the reasoning (character-wise) of their decisions... it was a good laugh though...

That has caused me to wonder if all Spanish films are crazy. I remember I watched an in-flight movie and there was a Spanish Snow White film, Blancanieves, a mute movie, and yes, it was running on the crazy borderline too.

I so need to read a book. But there are just so many distractions. I'm currently working my way into Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. So far so good, perhaps due to everything being of a very new culture to me. Wonder how long it will last though (ha!)

Oh and yeah, I got the results from my body check last time. I'm so awefully (NOT awfully, yes, it was intentional. Awe-fully!) well that the doctor suggests my next health check be in 5 years. So there you go. I'm a really healthy person. /sarcasm

So. Today. Nothing much going on... we have a family lunch, then I'll be hanging out with some friends. And then tomorrow is Monday... work day again... gawds...

Quick update: I went to see a really tragic movie-documentary.
Taiwan's shelter dogs... their having only Twelve Nights to survive the shelter.
It's really very sad, but the all... cinematography (?) was beautiful. They filmed the dingy dirty shabby shelter and there were scenes where they caught the light so well, it was actually beautiful.
But, still, yeah, sad. So very sad....

The Hobbit

Or rather, Martin Freeman, haha.

He's pretty good in being clueless and flabbergasted/shocked/tongue-tied/lost. As Dr. Watson, as young Bilbo. So, yeah... LOL

I got endlessly kicked at from the people behind me. UA seats are known to be wide and with lots of leg room, and they were still kicking me!

Next time if I go to UA, I will equip myself with a cup of popcorns. Preferably caramel ones. With a heater, so the caramel stays damp and sticky. If they kick me more than 5 times, then I will start throwing dripping caramel popcorn missiles behind me.

As for The Hobbit, I can only imagine how the book would have read (and I don't really want to read it). Scenery's gorgeous, without saying. I loved the Brown Wizard... but, coming to think of it, I might want to read the book... because the movie seemed to leave a lot of loose ends... oh! What should I do??

Back to the movie, expect it to end in a cliffy. Yes, there will be a part 2. I probably would watch it too, just because I want to know what happens next. That and I distinctively remember seeing a clip in one of those the makings that they had to "sail" down a river in barrels, and i think that would be fun to see them being so... helpless... I'm mean!

Anyway!

First, I'm going out for lunch. Then I'm going to stroll through the city and walk past a couple of bookshops, and pass by the library, maybe sit down and read for an hour or so... heehee!

Skyfall

I actually have another post brewing in my mind, but after last night's visit to the movies - Skyfall, I just have to rant.
Ok, I'm almost 30, and this IS my first 007 movie ever. I don't know if it should be a shame or not, but ohwell. Just. Duh.

The opening sequence was beautiful, I'll have to give it that.

The story was a bit stupid, really. I loved that porcelain bulldog haha, and the joke about it too.

Shanghai was really beautiful there. The problem I had was with Macau.

A rant will inadvertly attract spoilers popping in, so I have this under a cut.

Are all Bond movies like that? If so, I don't think I'll watch any other Bond movie anymore. (Except for the one either in the 60's or 70's that was REALLY shot in Macau, or so I heard)

With my Chinese exam over (I didn't flunk, but I did not do well. Then the teacher said he's going to take the score from the higher test only, so I decided WHATEVER since I got 100% the last time).

I also successfully sent the boss off to Ireland, thank goodness.

On that week that I was alone, it was really hectic. But a colleague, on a small talk with me asked, "hey, you were busy as hell... but it looked like you liked it! And you were so efficient!" Well of course, I'm usually lost just because I was at a loss of what to do...

I also found out I'm actually adept in the kitchen! After that Squid Ink Risotto dinner I made, I made another dinner (weekends only, apparently)

But this was only salad, so it was basically easy. Though I found out making a salad is not as easy as I thought.

Over the weekend I also rescued a dog!

I found a stray dog on Friday night. The poor dog was scared shitless and was hiding in the bushes. I stayed for 2 hours next to her but still didn't come out.

Then on Saturday morning, I tried again and the dog came out for a bit. I called the shelter place and when the people came the car scared the dog again and we had to do the whole luring the dog out with food thing again. Relatively clean, clean teeth, clean ears, must have been either abandoned or just lost. I hope she's just a lost dog. Poor thing if she were abandoned.

Oh, we watched Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter too. The trailer made it look really good, but the actual movie... DISLIKE!

I mean, when Mary said "YOU LIED TO ME ABOUT ALL THIS" I countered with a "HE DID NOT LIE TO YOU. HE TOLD YOU THE TRUTH SINCE DAY 1, YOU THOUGHT HE WAS JOKING!"

And that, is my update for today. Have to go for the family lunch, and then in the afternoon I'm going to do some quick shopping, go visit that dog and I'm going to cook another dinner tonight.

Because it's Harry Dan Radcliffe. No, scratch that too. Because it looks delightfully spooky?? oh yeah! It took me until Dan Radcliffe's name was shown that I knew it was him LOL how he's aged!

I did mention that I would be going to see a couple of movies from the so-called Taiwan Film Fest.

Today's show was the Taiwan Shorts, and that is, the 4 short movies... ha... I'm glad I have my priorities straight. The reason I chose to watch this was just because of the third movie, Time Lapse [Trailer Link], and I am proud to say that the best movie was... Time Lapse. Hah!

It's about a couple of kids who somehow stumble upon an antique photography studio, and how they changed through the old photographer's stories of each and every photograph. They, from being aimless, slowly learn to set a direction for themselves. I was most moved by, again, the topic of death. It was so interesting to hear about the story of the man who had no family, and decided to go take a photograph for his funeral. He was laughing heartily in that photo. Bittersweet. Also the story of the photographer's wife, when she died, saying they'll meet 10 years later... and true to her word, the photographer fell asleep that same night 10 years later and never woke up, despite the kids' attempts at keeping him company the whole night.

In short, I'm a big sucker for romance and a big sap.

I'm now feeling a bit sick and squeamish... ugh... guess i'll just wash up and head off to bed.
