oooh.... TRAVEL! Although it's just to next-door Hong Kong, I did go through immigration, an-hour-long transport, needed foreign money, and so, this is my SECOND travel since the pandemic. (First was a quick 2-day to Shunde, China, which, after that, everything went to hell and we had a draconian closed-border policy).

Usual morning view.

It was mostly holidays last week so I didn't have a formal look, haha.

So... my different get ups:

End of the day after-shower pajama look: I bought a specific headband that would cover my ears because I hate in the middle of the night mosquito flying sounds near my ear... I have some sort of irrational fear of mosquitos and mini cockroaches creeping into my ears.

Untitled

Even if we do not intend to go out, we always get changed into day clothes during the day. For one, even if we are not going out, we still need to walk the dogs. So it's always comfy clothes during the day. There are some Chinese people, by my experience, those from Shanghai, go out in their pajamas. I don't think I've seen that when in Guangzhou. But Shanghai, it was an eye-opening experience. People in pyjamas at the mall ("The Friendship Store" in the old days), people in pyjamas going out on their bikes in the highly polluted streets. How do you go back home and sleep in that?

Untitled

And then my go to work look. Whenever I'm dressed formal-ish I like to put on subtle weird jewelry... such as this dinosaur earrings LOL. Some people notice and they comment on the childish accessory, which then I say that this is a brand. It's the Sport b. Dino (under the Agnes b. umbrella)!

Hello all! Today... was a journey... The Macau Government just implemented some new Covid-related policy three days ago. Essentially, it went from a total draconian control of must-quarantine-if-coming-in-from-overseas and daily itinerary reporting and check-ins for tracing possible contamination... to... a total laissez-faire "even if you got covid, if your symptoms are not the-you-are-dying-type then you better just stay home and not go anywhere not even the hospital" type of thing.

My alarm went off at 6:00am but I was feeling lazy, and hey, it was still dark out, so I just laid in bed until I heard the noises of my Sis getting up and start preparing for her day... only then I decided to stand up.

Happy Holidays, whatever you celebrate! My Christmas will most likely be cancelled (I might be Covid positive tomorrow), will wait and see!

Hello world!
I missed the 19-November GAMD and it could have been exciting, as it's the Grand Prix in Macau. However, I don't really like the Grand Prix, and I didn't go anyway, so I have nothing to show about that. Here I am with my 23-November instead.

The morning starts pretty much as usual.

Hello! This is Kat from Macau!
Halloween IS a big thing in the USA but over here it's just like... "yeah we know the Americans do it it's dress up and asking for candy" kind of thing. However, in recent years, I do hear neighbourhoods are trying to do that. But I'm still stumped by the mechanics of trick or treating in an apartment building. "Hey I'm done on Floor 12, let's go to Floor 13!" and you're probably not going to be allowed to go into a building that you don't live in? But I don't know. I don't have kids, and I don't have to worry about it.

Oh and while Halloween is tomorrow, it's Sunday today, and I did something slightly related to halloween today, so this is my halloween submission.

Frankie comes to wake me up today. His mug just cracks me up every time I see it, LOL.

Hello! This seemed like an interesting challenge so here it goes. A house tour, or in my case, an apartment tour. First, a NOT-drawn-to-scale floor plan, I'm no architect, haha. Green brackets are windows. Pink things are doors. We start from the big arrow which is the entrance to the apartment. Oh, and photos are taken in wide-angle, so I don't know... rooms look smaller than they are? or bigger?

Untitled

So first we are greeted with the Dining Room. Weird how the main entrance leads to the Dining Room? Well, because, originally, this was the living room. The room further off, now marked as living room, was part of the open-top verandah. Mom decided we didn't have enough space to closed off part of the verandah so we could have an extra room. So, the main entrance leads to the Dining Room. We go further in, and that's the living room. Everything's messy and upside down because we have no visitors LOL. If and when there are visitors, Mom would command us to clean up, put the chairs in place, and all that.

So this is the apartment I live in! Please excuse the mess in... most of the rooms LOL.

I missed the 4-August GAMD, and I haven't gone anywhere on holiday (well, I did, but I already wrote about it in the June GAMD, so, not repeating myself), so I'd just do a GAMD today.

It's Saturday, but my sister needs to work, so, early day, and it was overcast and very windy.

Hello again! Yes. I am writing about 25-July because my 24-July was much the same as the other one I posted previously 12-July. We got to go back to work on 25-July, so here I am!

As usual, it's early morning for me. I wake up, but don't roll around in bed. I quickly go through my morning ablutions.

There you go! Hopefully the restrictions will continue to loosen over the next few days and life can really get back to normal!

I know the actual GAMD is 24-July this month, but, this is unprecedented times for me here in Macau. We had a relevantly easy time through Covid since 2020, pretty much controlled, no real lockdown (only the initial 2 weeks in February 2020), but right now, we have this draconian "it's NOT a lockdown!" lockdown. You can't even go walk the dog, according to the police. So. It's a lockdown. Officially started yesterday, so I've established a targeted routine for myself for the rest of the week... and the expected week after (the conspiracy theorist in me is convinced that the government will see "oh hey! it's so nice to have these people locked up. Let's extend it for another week for sh*ts and giggles!" Don't worry, I'm not at the foil-hat level conspiracy theorist yet.). Here's yesterday's newspaper front page for your leisurely review.

Midnight and lights off and sleep. Well. Seems like I still got a pretty full day despite being stuck at home almost all day.

Ah... this book I'm currently reading just isn't gripping my attention... it's been dragging. I'm currently reading The King's Cartographer. I'm not sure if it's because I'm still in the beginning and the book is still setting the tone/backstory... so it was still all a very narrative type of "so this guy went there to say that" and whatnot...

but I'm just not getting hooked.
Untitled

Since we are talking about books, I just found out another Harry Potter actor is going to publish a book. I've pre-ordered, and I guess I'll just wait for October. So... that I know of, 3 of the Harry Potter (child) actors have published books. Are there any more? I'm amendable to reading those. Evanna's was interesting enough with the topic of anorexia, Bonnie's read like a term paper (sorry)... Tom's pretty humorous on his IG, so hopefully his will bring some humor too.

Untitled

Emma's book club was interesting... but... yes she has a good cause, but I'm not there yet in terms of wanting to read those books. I think I actually read one of the books, but didn't participate in the discussions (I'm usually just a lurker in book clubs)

Yes, the prompt was for 17-June, but it's somewhat special to me because, I was stuck in town for 2 years (since February 2020) and I just so happened to go on a very short trip... so I'm making my GAMD into 2 days. But I'll also only put key photo points here... coz I have too many photos LOL. I will have a link to the full album with descriptions (hopefully) at the end of the post, for anyone interested.

For this trip, I went with some work colleagues and they know China well, they hired a 7-seater and drove us around in it, so we had relative freedom on where to go and how... as well as getting confounded by the GPS system, haha.

16 June 2022

First time traveling, and to China, after 2 years, and while still under the effects of the pandemic, was nerve-wracking. All that technological stuff of transferring your PCR test results to the Chinese platform and all that. Anyway, it was done. It took roughly 1.5 hours to drive from Hengqin 橫琴 to Shunde 順德.

This was a short fun trip... although we did almost no sightseeing LOL. It's lucky I went on this trip because just today (19-June) Macau is back on lockdown again, so no in, no out. I'm stuck in Macau again.

As promised, the full set (with all the food items) of photos are in this Flickr album. As of writing this, I haven't completed writing the captions yet, but I will get to it once I've hit the submit button here.

The challenge: Show a different meal each day during the week 23-27 May 2022. No 2 consecutive same meals (e.g. breakfast and breakfast)

Monday 23-May-2022, Breakfast
Lately, the family has been loving this Nissin breakfast granola cereal thing. Nissin is known for their instant noodles, and breakfast cereals are pretty new, at least to us. We've tried a few of the flavours, and my personal favorite is this one: Matcha. Next on my favorite is the Caramel Nuts. The Strawberry one is okay, but I vehemently dislike the other 2 flavors (which I haven't even cared to remember what the flavor name is), because they've got RAISINS in it. I.hate.raisins.

Tuesday 24-May-2022, Snacks
Alright, if you check the photo exif data it shows the photo was taken on 23-May, but that's because I took the photo on this day. We've been happily munching on this all week.
As a kid, my Mom would buy this weird red-colored something-strips for snacks. It's pretty delicious, a tiny bit sweet, and tiny bit of spicy for a kick. I never knew what that was, but that Mom would buy that from an... either a Chinese apothecary or a Chinese dry goods store. But that store closed down, and I haven't had that since. It just so happened that a specialty store imported this from Hong Kong and I saw their post on facebook, so I had them reserve it for me. NOW, I know it's actually some kind of dried and seasoned fish strips.
Untitled

Wednesday 25-May-2022, Lunch
I had a meeting in the afternoon at an off-office location, and I wanted to check out their F&B, I anticipated I would be snacking around there, so for lunch, I decided to have a light lunch of a Spicy Lentils Soup and some toast.
Untitled

Thursday 26-May-2022, Dinner
This is a bit of a cheat, because... it's a very many photos LOL. Well, I went for a private dining kitchen thing, おまかせ Omakase. I know the chef guy from before already, but one of my friends really wanted to try it out, and he moved to a new location, so we went to try. He outdid himself again. Since it's a special menu, I'm posting the menu as well (it's a mix of Japanese and Chinese, translation for reference):

日替前菜
蛸🐙mariné
縁側魚炙🐟
三文魚牛油果🥑沙津盛
鮪漬け
熊本和牛叩き
東京巨蛋豬煲
咖哩豬扒🐷
流水素麺🌊
KIKA雪糕🍦

Appetiser
Marinated Octopus
Seared... Flounder maybe
Salmon Avocado Salad
Pickled Tuna
Kumamoto Beef
Egg with veggies and mushroom hot pot
Curry Pork Cutlet
Nagashi Somen (Soba noodles served in flowing stream)
Kika (brand) ice cream (no photo; Okinawa Sea Salt flavor)

Oh, and I forgot the MOST IMPORTANT thing... he has a dog. I forgot to ask for the dog's name. But as you can see, I made a new friend LOL!

Friday 27-May-2022, Supper Dessert
Actually, I had another amazing Japanese dinner on this day, but I couldn't show two same meals consecutively... LOL so here my post-dinner dessert. The dessert at that Japanese place wasn't particularly enticing (just the usual ice cream in frozen fruit, which you can buy in the local supermarkets anyway), so we decided to go to a specialty sweet-soup shop. What I have here is a Black Sesame and Walnut Paste/Soup. 芝麻合桃糊. Not the best I've had. The best I've had was in China, just at the border before coming to Macau. I wonder if that shop is still open. I've heard it's since shut down due to lack of business... but I don't know. I don't think I'd go through all the hassle of getting a Visa for China, and then having to go through all those travel requirements (PCR/NAT test, certificate of vaccination, and all that) just for a sojourn of 2 hours in China for dessert.

As it's a Sunday, I'm not in the office, so I haven't got a photo of the view from the office (which is more interesting than this, I guess).

You can see I stuck some glass stickers on the left side of my window, that's because the left window looks directly into the neighbour's window, and I hate closed curtains, so I stuck something there instead. Still lets light in, but neighbour can't see me. (Once as a kid I didn't realize the neighbour was there and I was changing and he saw me stark naked)

GAMD 2022.04.24 View Challeng

Looking out of the window, you can see the neighbour's balcony on the left, and the plants you see on the right are from our own balcony. The buildings opposite us are not too tall, so we still get a good bit of sunshine and sky view.

Hi again! Today's GAMD has happily fallen on a Public Holiday here, the Cheng Ming Fesitval 清明節. It's something like a Chinese-version All Souls' Day, where people go "up to the mountains" (Chinese cemeteries are usually on mountains or hills) and clean up the ancestor's graves or headstones and pay respects. Being of Western heritage, my family does not observe this festival, so it's just another holiday for me.

Another big hello from... dreary Macau! It's overcast, it's humid, it's foggyish, it's grey. It's also Monday, so there isn't really much to show about today. I also didn't want to show the same few morning ablutions images, so there are some different things being shown today.

I kind of binge-watched Netflix for a while last night (I did force myself to lights off and sleep at around quarter past midnight, so it wasn't that bad), but I was still tired this morning at woke up at 7ish. One bulb left on my orchid to open! Look at that beauty!

Another thing I’ve found out as I’m using DW is that, I can’t just share a post… so I guess I’ll need to cross-post community posts.

This month’s Glimpse At My Day Voice and Language Challenge! Cross-posted from LJ and DW community. Origin post here.

Will you need a script? I'll just summarize:

Portuguese: Can speak well enough to live and travel in Portugal, not sure if can work there. No confidence when talking to strangers.

Chinese (Cantonese): People are surprised seeing someone looking as I do speaking fluent Cantonese. More fun in Hong Kong.

Chinese (Mandarin): a very poor attempt, there isn't much to translate anyway LOL. Studied a bit of Mandarin in the last year of secondary school. Because of fewer intonations I think it's harder than Cantonese because you can get plenty more same-sounding words.

Japanese: I loved playing Japanese RPG games as kid, in order to understand the storyline, I learnt a bit of Japanese on my own, especially the katakana writing system. Studied 3 years in Uni, got quite good at it, wrote a blog daily, but I've forgotten everything after graduating Uni because not much chance to practice.

German: I'm learning German, but there are no good schools for German in Macau. My Dad worked in China when I was a kid, so I never learnt with him.
