I don't really listen to Cantopop music as... I never quite liked them. My impression of Cantopop was more it was "merely subbing Jpop". I distinctively remember an artist saying how he created a piece of music from scratch, and when he sang it, it was simply just a Cantonese version of a Japanese anime side character "character image" song (a song sang by the "character", the voice actor, of the anime). So just because it was a character image song, one would only have heard it if they bought the specific anime CD (no itunes back in the day). And it so happened I had that particular anime CD lol (for those curious it was.... I forget the actual name, but it's that Pig Girl Superhero Burin anime).

That is to say, I don't listen to Cantopop music. There is only one artist I did buy a CD of (well known creative) of which there are only 2 songs I actually like. So. I don't know Cantopop muisc.

But just so happened to get in my hands (free for me) tickets for a Canto artist. After doing what I had to do (disperse most of it), I had 2 tickets leftover and asked if any of my friends wanted to go. There was a taker, so we went.

Artist: 陳蕾 Panther Chan
I thought she has a good voice. At first I thought she was just lip-syncing to the music, but it was just a slight delay of the projection so it seemed as if the sung song and the shape of her lips didn't match.

Interesting stage show too. They re-used certain props in different ways, the stage itself was interesting too.

The first half of her show also had a very death-y theme to it. There's this coffin, a gunshot to her, demons, a song had some... Hindu-esque chanting (must be some sort of funeral ritual chanting I guess?)

However, the show started to drag on and after around 2 hours, we thought it should be coming to a close. But no. Then the mic system went dead during one song. In the end, she re-sang that song, and then in a chatting session said "When I first started I had to sing covers, but this time I found out I have so many songs, I don't know what to choose... so I'm not choosing, I'm singing all my songs!"

That's where I decided to leave LOL. That was around 10.15pm. The next working day I asked a colleague who also took the ticket, how much longer she sang, and she said oh, until 11.30pm-ish. So, it was a good call to leave early.

Anyway, for this concert, I did do homework and listened to her 2 most recent albums. So here are 2 music videos from each of those albums that I thought were nice. Both were performed in the concert too.

The other day I saw a shared post on Facebook about some monk guy (not sure if he’s a real monk or a “show monk”) going to hold a concert in Hong Kong. The video showed 2 music video clips, but while I didn’t care for one of the songs, the other one captivated me so.

He turned the Buddhist chant (I assume it’s called the Heart Sutra) into some kind of hypnotic chant and THAT was amazing, for me.

The Vienna Philharmonic

Programme
L.v. Beethoven (1770-1827)
Leonore Overture No.3 in C Major, op. 72b

R. Wagner (1813-1883)
Prelude and "Liebestod" from Tristan und Isolde

L.v. Beethoven (1770-1827)
Symphony No.7 in A Minor, op.92

Encore
Voices of Spring (
J. Strauss II)

Again by the Vienna Philharmonic, another great show. However my only question is, if it's "Timeless Beethoven" why is there a Wagner as interloper?

People seem to like Symphony 7 more than Symphony 8, but after hearing both... I personally like Symphony 8 better. Although I have to say Symphony 7 is more commonly broadcasted, especially the Allegreto part.

The Golden Peak
L.v. Beethoven (1770-1827)
Symphony No. 8 in F Major, op. 93

R. Strauss (1864-1949)
Ein Heldenleben, op. 40

Encore 1
Delirien Waltz

Encore 2
Thunder and Lightning Polka (Strauss)

The Beethoven was really good, simply superb! The Strauss had too much going on, it seemed a bit strange for a classical piece. But the quality of the Vienna Philharmonic is undisputable!

Beautiful numbers. The Encores sounded familiar but I can't place the names. While the named programe pieces were very beautifully performed, the Encores were obvious show-off pieces. Good show!

Korean Traditional Folk Music "Arirang"

- + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Honestly, I would have preferred to go to today's show (8-Oct) as they are playing the more classical pieces... Mozart, Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky, but when we were discussing what shows to see, my friend found out that she's flying out today. So ohwell.

So they started with the Britten Three Divertimenti. It was a weird piece. As I listened, I knew the guys up there are very skilled in their instruments, but the music piece, the beats, the rhythms, everything was off. It was terrible! Then I read the program notes and found out that well, it's supposed to be like that. But that also made me realize another thing - to purposefully play something in a very unrhythmetic beat must also be more difficult than a piece with an easy and smooth beat.

As the show went on, the pieces renditioned got easier to my ear as well, approaching classical, haha. By Dvorak I was all at home again "that's what a quartet is supposed to sound like!" It's a pity I didn't decide to watch tonight's show even on my own.

The encore was nice too, though I don't know much about Korean folk music.

Here I am again!

Just spent the morning cleaning up the apartment. Couldn't do much. The mess in the living room and dining room is just... a mess. I did what I could. Vacuumed, dusted the TV, nothing else that could be done out there.

Now, my room, is another story. It's pristine clean. Let's see how many days it lasts. I'm not a pack-rat and it's not that I live like a... whatever, but the mess in my room is usually the dust. In my mind, I think that "since I never have the windows open, the dust is never getting in," so I hardly ever dust. What I do regularly is vacuum because of all the dog hair, all the VISIBLE dog hair... And small knick knacks like my earrings/accessory tray eventually turn messy, so once in a while I have to put everything back together.

But, as I always say, nothing is forever. Maybe another light dusting on the night of the 24th, so that when the party is on on the 25th, at least the room is presentable.

Cash has been a bit on the tight side for me. It's all self-inflicted, and I should start chasing people to pay their debts.

I won a Canon Selphy 910 printer in the company party though. Of course, I went up to the stage and received the prize, and thanked the boss that drew my staff number with grace, and properly.

Off-stage though, I wailed. I was rooting for the iPhone 6. *sniff sniff* I'm sad. But still, winning something is a pretty happy thing. Back to the first hand though, I don't really need a selfie printer... not to mention the paper would be super-expensive.

I've been shying away from actual song-music lately. Classics, background music, ambience type are what I like nowadays. There's Lindsey Stirling that I've liked for quite a bit of time already, and now there's Taylor Davis who's really interesting, and she has an album with Lara de Wit, all very interesting.

All that of course has made me itching to play on the piano. But it's a no-go. The piano is now being used as "extra horizontal space" and has presents piled up high on it. Bleah. Can't clean that off just yet.

After lunch, I have to go out and make a final dash to finish up the last of the presents. 2 for the aunts and 1 for an uncle. And I'm DONE. Can you feel the pain in my purse?

Gosh... in some ways, I hate Christmas... especially the materialistic side of it...

Beethoven's Pathetique 2nd Movement

Pachelbel's Canon

Chopin's Fantaisie Impromptu

Bach's Prelude & Fugue No.2 in C minor

Of course, I could play none.

The only piece I could play with any possibility of being recognized is Beethoven's Fur Elise, and even that isn't completely right (I'm sure I miss certain parts that is to be repeated.)

Coz, well, I can't read score. I don't play by the ear. I more or less... play by memory. Try to decipher the notes section by section. Trial play (without any rhythm and beat whatsoever). See someone play enough times, copy their rhythm, try to play like them. And eventually, I can play the piece.

I noticed that when I took that piano course 2 months ago. They quit having the adult piano courses, so I have been trying to play the rest of the book myself. And I noticed my learning pattern. So, now youtube is my friend. I search for people learning from the same books, see them play, then I try to copy their play.

Not really the best way to learn, but, heh, I don't aspire to be a pianist. I'm just playing to kill some time. I think I'm ready to move on to the next level of books, so... I should pass by the piano school sometime next week to buy the grade 2 books.

It's raining today, so I have quite some time today to be fooling around with the piano, heeheehee! Mom seems to be quite appeased that I'm mucking around on the thing. Maybe I'll make a video of my shoddy Fur Elise, mwahaha. Or maybe not.

Les Dinos...?

Last year December, I was desperately collecting the Sport b x eclipse crossover Dino tins... I managed to get them all...

多謝晒咁多位幫我嘅朋友仔!

This year, they are doing it again, but with some band called Les Dinos. I'm not sure if it's a pre-existing band joining the marketing bandwagon, or, it's a "virtual band" that's part of the marketing bandwagon. By the name, I guess it's the latter.

The other side is a shadowy image of the band members. Actually the Dinos here are all a Dino-fied representation of the band members. Here, I found this!:

*

It was a lovely evening. Very surprising was, I bought 2 tickets for a friend and myself, and we were seated. The hall started to fill up and there was an empty seat to my left, but I didn't think much about it.

What are the odds that a colleague from work came and just happened to have bought that one empty seat? It was funny. When he saw me, he said, "I can't believe it, the odds!" (he's a finance/optimization  guy so his use of "the odds" was quite funny to me).

I guess Mendelssohn being a classic, did make me fall asleep for a bit there. But the Orkney Wedding was wonderful. The lead violinist actually (for show) drank a bottle of whiskey and the orchestra went haywire, nobody in sync, it was hilarious. And then the Sunrise was portrayed by the bagpipes - I've never heard bagpipes live before, and the guy in the complete attire - guy in skirt! kilt! and I have to say the bagpipes do sound wonderful. The Firebird was really, really good. Wonderful even!

They did 2 encores, I couldn't hear what the first one was, but the second one, for the New Year, was the Auld Lang Syne, with 5 (or 6? I forgot) guys on bagpipes again. And again I thought that bagpipes had a very beautiful sound.

It was a lovely evening indeed! And our Saturday night wouldn't be complete without visiting our favourite cafe-bar :D

It's been ages since I last did some blog-hopping (I got some free time to myself today, how rare!) and I found something interesting.

The world is really a funny place sometimes. Just yesterday (or day before yesterday), I did that book meme and that reminded me of the Three Investigators Mysteries. Guess what, my blog-hopping led me to finding out about a German band, called Jupiter Jones.

The blog didn't say much, so I don't know if the band name has got anything to do with the mystery series, but I found the whole coincidence funny, haha.

http://www.cranberries.com/#tour

I didn't know they were doing a tour!

I'm such a slowpoke.

But darn it the one in Hong Kong is on a Sunday T.T

This is gonna be a tough choice. Easter Sunday at that!

Should I go? Should I not go? Do they tour frequently? If not, then I'm most definitely going, even if I have to go alone.

I don't mind going to concerts alone anyway :P

That and the venue is just at Wanchai. Good. It's at the island and I have no issues with transportation.

Guess I'll have to go home and talk to my mom about it. It is Easter Sunday after all... maybe as a family tradition I shouldn't go... but oh! I really want to go!

Lately I've been really obsessed with this song by Ivana Wong 王菀之 titled 畫意 (Painting)

Usually I'm not a fan of Hong Kong artists but Ivana has been growing on me lately. It all started with this music video titled 水百合 (Water Lily)

I've always known that Ivana had a special touch to her music and after seeing this Water Lily video I was drawn to her, and got her album (I think it's the newest one). And in it is where I heard of the Painting song. It's about Van Gogh, pretty sad really.

I finish this post with a (maybe illegal) video of a concert performance of Painting

Ticket prices $200 and $250

=======================================================================

On second thoughts, all the Tuesdays and Thursdays (definite) and probably the Wednesdays shows will have to be missed.
And then I don't feel like waking up at 5 in the morning to walk the dogs then queue at the line at 6:30am until 9:00am for a "queuing ticket" to finally be buying the tickets at 10:00am. No. I'll just go in the afternoon. If tickets are sold out too bad. If available then I will get them.

I'm still torn about the musical. Anyone knows if FAME is any good? I'm also torn about the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Yes, they are very good, I've never seen them, but the venue in Macau is just plain shabby... and for that price... just not so attractive anymore.

The recent weather has been driving a lot of people mad.

First, it was hot like summer, which is pretty much normal for May. Then, it rains constantly over the weekend. Again, normal for May. But the rain was the pouring, raining-cats-and-dogs type of rain, which is not normal for May (that's more like a july thing). Yesterday and today, it was so cold and chilly, one would think it's November!

Fighting a sleepy spell right now, that's what I'm doing! I had plans to pass by the sportswear shop to get some of those racket grip-strip thingies, since my badminton racket's handgrip part is melting in some parts, and crumbling away in other parts. I've already menancingly tore the current strip thingy out already, but noticed the inside was made of really dirty wood. Maybe it's all recycled materials? I am reluctant to spend the cash to actually buy a new racket, because I want to make sure that this will become a regular habit! So this is all I'm willing to spend on for now.

Everyone's thinking of holiday plans, except for me. I'm still feeling a little sour about the issue, but I'm trying to forget about it. I've already gotten tickets to the Lisa Ono 小野リサ concert, and am patiently waiting for the announcement of the Suede Live Concert in Hong Kong, so that I could go get tickets. Perhaps the only holiday I'll be taking is a day or two in August. Despite the very very very attractive MOP$999 round trip air fare from Macau to Tokyo/Osaka, I shall abstain and not go to Japan just yet...... I think.....

I will be having my Chinese class again tonight. I guess the teacher is going to get a kick out of grading my dictation last week. It's a really annoying situation that I know all those words to be dictated, I could read them all out, I would not mix them up, but I can't write them out if my life depended on it. Funny thing is, I could actually type them out using the Changjie radical input method! I'm going to ask him if next time, when I don't remember how to write the actual word, if I could just write out the typing radicals instead. He's definitly going to say no, but it's going to make the class laugh so much.

... Shows that I'm feeling so bored of the classes now...

ah, why can't the boss just leave yet? I really would like to go to the sportsgear shop right now! (because it's really quite boring over here)

Dunno why, but I've been feeling really upbeat while listening to this song :D

Loving this song and the lyrics recently. Can't stop listening to it.
My Sis says it's boring, but heh... I just like it, can't help it :D

So! Last night I went to Yundi Li's Piano Recital. It was a Chopin event as he did all Chopin stuff (well, no... for the encore he did a Chinese piece again. I was soooooo expecting it. ha!)

But... he wasn't too impressive. He did not falter, but we heard many, many wrong notes (ha!). And while my friend was annoyed that the guy sitting next to her was tapping his foot - with all that carpeting, he didn't make any noise, but it was annoying.

It shouldn't have bothered me, but well, he had the programme booklet on his lap, and the programme booklet is white in color, and it's dark in the auditorium/performance hall... so when he started tapping his foot, the booklet moved, along with his foot tapping, and it annoyed me. The white programme booklet was surprisingly visible in the dark (it reflected any little light there was).

The kid behind me had a blocked nose and so was sniffling every once in a while. guh. Gave me the creeps - but aside from that, he was quiet and I heard him tell his mom "He missed a key!" Good going, kid, you have a good ear!

Someone somewhere to my left fell asleep and snored. Boooo...

Last night's programme? Here, here, all Chopin's:
Five Nocturnes, opp. 9-1, 9-2, 15-2, 27-2 and 48-1
Andante spianato and Grande Polonaise brillante, op. 22
Mazurkas, op. 33
Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, op. 35
Polonaise in A-flat major, op. 53 “Heroic”

I was pretty high when he played the Polonaise :D
I was ecstatic when he played the Funeral March (under the Piano Sonata section). My friend was wondering why I would be ecstatic with any type of funeral march music. I just happen to like it.

For the encores, he did the Chinese piece (something about enjoying the moon, a very mid-Autumn festival piece, I heard) and then Chopin's Revolutionary Etude in C Minor. That was pretty neat (but that was also where he missed a few keys).

I was hoping he'd do the Fantasie Impromptu somewhere somehow :D

My next show would be a Baroque Opera, 3 Acts by Henry Purcell, Dido and Aenas.
