Product Description
Rose, a healer’s apprentice in the town of Hagenheim, feels drawn to the duke’s older son, Wilhelm, but he is betrothed to a young noblewoman who has been hidden away for years, ever since she was threatened by an “evil conjurer.” Though her attachment to Wilhelm grows, Rose encourages the suit of his younger brother, Rupert, who begins to amend his rakish ways under her virtuous influence. The story’s outcome is never in doubt, but the lovers endure many setbacks before a fortunate circumstance paves the way for the happy ending. Dickerson creates a sympathetic character in Rose, who has her weaknesses as well as considerable strength of will, morality, and faith. Though references to Christianity are woven through the book, many readers will be surprised by the climactic scene, in which Wilhelm heals Rose by casting out demons in the name of Jesus. Young people looking for Christian fiction as well as a historical romance may enjoy this medieval love story. Grades 7-10. --Carolyn Phelan

I will admit, I absolutely had to buy this book because of the beautiful cover. And admit to the fact that I've judged a book by the cover.
Or I was just reading a genre that is really not my cup of tea.
Perhaps I have grown out of YA books... I just can't help but feel so annoyed with many parts in the book... thought patterns are overly simple, some events seemed disjointed, and it felt like there was not much, allow me to use the word, tact, in unfolding the story. The story did not slowly unfold. The story was just dished out. Mysteries revealed themselves less than a page away.
The title says this is the healer's apprentice, but nothing much healing or apprenticing happens. The story starts out beautifully enough, girl aspires to work her way up and be the healer. Very suddenly the story goes to girl needs to marry off.
This was a cute read while it lasted, but I wouldn't be dying to re-read this again. I also don't like stories to be so blatantly Christian. This could have gone more subtly!
I'm so glad I bought this when Amazon was having that weird discount phase... I bought this for $3 as opposed to the normally priced $9.99!!
