Shamelessly stolen from
speaksoftlyloveWhat book are you reading now?I was reading
I'm Not From Around Here by Ishai Klinowsky and was around half way through, but don't know why I started
One Last Hope by Roberta Kagan, which I instantly regret. The sentences in One Last Hope don't really flow well, feels flat or amateur and I would like to just give it up, but I've started reading it and I don't want to have another "give up" book. I'm Not From Around Here started very nicely. I liked the story of the Author's mother, but when it came to his father I started to dislike the book. But it's better than One Last Hope.
What are your favorite books? [You can put specific books or genres or both.]Top on the list is
Black Beauty by Anna Sewell (not a required school reading). For many summers (long summer holidays), I would reread this book. Next I guess is
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (required school reading). I was a very fast reader and while we were reading line by line in class, with the teacher explaining this and that and that, I would read ahead, then I had to skip back again to see where the class was at, make sure I won't be caught off guard by the teacher, then I would read on and on and on again. A more recent like would be
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte (not a required school reading). I only read it very recently. Kindle times, and I left my Kindle open one day on my work desk and my [English] Boss saw it and asked me "are you reading Jane Eyre?" just because he saw a certain character's surname in the text (Kindles don't show the book title on the reading page, unless you press some button. Yes, it was an old kindle haha), now I do not recall which character though, but that he was able to tell with one character's name.... I was impressed by my then-boss as well.
What foreign languages do you read?I can read Chinese and Portuguese relatively easy enough. (Not really). I'm happy to say I did finish reading 2 Chinese books, and am currently reading a third. I suck at Japanese but I've painstakingly read 2 Japanese books as well (or was that 3?) and I have one currently reading as well... though I haven't picked it up in a long time.
What 's the funniest book you ever read?I would like to say Terry Pratchett's Discworld, but while I do love Discworld, the book(s) that actually made me go LOL were the
Three Men in a Boat and
Three Men in a Bummel by Jerome K. Jerome.
What are some of the scariest books you've ever read?I read
The Shining and then
Doctor Sleep by Stephen King. Not scary at all. Especially Doctor Sleep. Had a more WTF reaction to it. I don't go out and look for scary books to read. Oh wait, no, I got an indie horror book a couple months ago on the Kindle but it sucked. More perplexing than scary. But oh,
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro was a close scary book to me. Not really scary per se, but the build-up to that big shocking reveal was really spooky. It's not a feeling I will have again, even if I re-read it. Definitely a very good book though!
About how many books do you own?I have so many, I don't even know. Just on my visible shelf here is already over 50. I have another shelf behind which should have some 100s or so. Then I think I have a box of books under my bed with 10 or 20 or so books that I had meant to take to the Library but haven't gone around doing that. My Mom was a school teacher then a school principal, and she imposed a "Books are for learning and WE DO NOT EVER THROW BOOKS OUT" rule at home. I actually managed to get rid of some books before our first renovation 15 years ago....
How many books per month do you usually borrow from the library? It's not regular. Libraries here suck, don't have a lot of choice. I may go like once every few months, and do take out a book or two, but nothing regular. However, back in primary school I would bring home a new book whenever I was done with the one I had, so it could be every day, every other day or every few days, depending on how fast I finish the book.
How much would you say you've paid in library fines in your life?I can proudly say, just $1 LOL. I never returned books late, only once when I forgot I loaned a book. And the penalty was a dollar.
Do you read in bed? Do you ever read while walking or driving?I read in bed. Walking or driving? Would be very hard??? Should anyone be reading while driving??????????????? I also read when I'm on the plane or train. Bus rides here are too short but I know there are places where the bus ride is longer and I believe that would be a good chance to read too.
Do you listen to audio books?I did for a bit. Don't think I enjoyed it very much. I prefer podcasts though.
Has anyone ever read aloud to you or you to them? Tell us more.Nope. Never. I mean the kind of actually reading the book to one another, no. But like asking about a cerain line or a quote then yes. I believe this question is gearing towards the more "cultivating" type (romantic or friendship or whatever) of reading to one another.
What book was the most difficult to read?If at school.... it was
Cry, The Beloved Country by Alan Paton. I remember the cover of the book. I didn't even recall the author's name until I did this search. We went through that very quickly. I guess Pride and Prejudice had taken up too much time in the school year, so we had to rush through that to say we finished the syllabus for the GCE. Off-school, I tried
The Catcher In The Rye by JD Salinger. I kind of think I had watched some cartoon or anime based off of it, but I couldn't stand it any longer... not with the constant cussing by the narrator. It was very difficult, and I had to give it up.
Do you read every word of a book, or skip parts that don't hold your interest?I try to read it all.
Do you buy new or used books, paperbacks or hardbacks, leather or collector's items?I love looking at hardbacks, but would only buy paperbacks. I'd be cool with new or used, but English used books were unheard of here in Macau back then, LOL. In my latest trip to London, I went *somewhere I've forgotten the name of* and it was like a street market or second hand market (it was near that.... bookshop of that movie with those famous actors that I've also forgotten the names of.... Hugh Grant??) and I bought a first pressing edition of the Black Beauty. I thought it was 6pounds but then the guy sold to me for like 50-something. I had no idea about second hand book rates and all that but I bought it. If it was a rip off, then I'm sorry for being naive... LOL
How do you feel about writing in books, dog earing, etc.I don't think I mind them. As long as they are school texts LOL.
What is the first book you remember reading?First book I remember reading was
Fluke by James Herbert. I remember because of the cute cover of a puppy in a pair of shoes (I think). Thinking back about it, it was a real deeeeeeep book and maybe not a kid's book. Reincarnation is not a topic for kiddie books LOL. However, I think I must have read something before that, because Fluke was also one of the first books I was allowed to buy. Another one of the first books I remember being allowed to buy was
A Night In The Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny (because guess what, there was a dog on the cover! LOL). I don't remember reading this book though. Maybe it was too difficult? I shall endeavor to read it again now then! We bought this book in London, and at the same time, my Sis bought
Mort by Terry Pratchett (I think it was because of either the white horse or the sparkly stars. Forget about the hooded Death. I have no idea why my Mom allowed that LOL we were kids probably 7 and 11) but since it was "my Sis' book", I never bothered to read it. Only much much later when I was in Uni did I discover Terry Pratchett's
The Truth (love the suicidal vampire Otto) then eventually found out my Sis' book was a Terry Pratchett book and of course I read it then.
Do you lend your books?(Most of) My friends read Chinese books. There's no one to lend to.... but yeah I lend books if people ask me for them.
What were your favorite books when you were a child?Still Black Beauty.
What children's books do you most enjoy as an adult?I would like to read Nancy Drew as I didn't read them as a kid (despite seeing them in the school library). I read The Three Investigators Mysteries back then.
Have you ever read a book more than once?Black Beauty (7 times maybe?), Pride and Prejudice (can't count)...
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte I read twice, I hated it at school, but a few of my friends loved it, so later in adult life (just within the past 5 years I think) I read it again. Sorry. Still hate it.
