Monday, 13 July 2020 12:48Admittedly, this week’s questions are a bit tough for me... not in the local culture!
1. Where is the most beautiful nature in your area?
There’s really no real “nature” area in Macau. The next best thing is Coloane Island, which has some nature trails and hiking routes but that’s it. You’re not likely to see any wild animals (maybe a squirrel or two, some birds maybe). It’s not “into the woods” kind of nature. It’s “hey there’s a tree there and a row of trees there” and if you get inside and get lost, it’s simply a “walking in any direction for 15 minutes (maximum 30 minutes) WILL lead you somewhere with civilization.”
2. Does your household grow some of its own food?
We do have a fig tree that we manage to get some figs... by some I mean 3 or so. (It’s more than 2, so it’s “some”) I know Dad has a few herb bushes. I think we also have a lemon tree that I’ve never seen it fruit (but got pricked numerous times) and there’s a papaya tree that I’m not sure if it still exists or not (coz the papaya tree tends to grow tall and I’m not sure if Dad has decided to chop it off before it invades to the 6th Floor neigbhour’s window. But we can’t do much food growing as it’s all in pots.
3. Do you recycle or repurpose a lot, a little, or somewhere in between?
Where we can. I recycle some boxes for storage boxes. We always keep paper bags and plastic bags (yes, the meme-ish joke starts: I have a plastic bag... filled with plastic bags..... that type of thing)
4. What do you think the most endangered part of the Earth is?
Don’t really understand this question, but if talking about my immediate area, then it’s the sea. So much reclaiming. Soon it’s not Macau and 2 islands (Taipa and Coloane), it’ll be “one entire Macau.”
5. What is the single best way for an individual to help the environment?
I can go the dark road and say “to not exist” as humans are the number one destroyers of the environment, but nah. I guess it’s to try our best to not make it worse. Save water - military style showers (water on to wet yourself, water off to soap and lather, water on to rinse off, pronto), categorize your trash (you’d be surprised to know over here we don’t even divide the most basic of “trash to burn” and “trash not to burn” because everything goes into the landfill), and mainly just try not to create much trash. Here in Macau we are rather behind in terms of recycling and environment protection so there’s a lot to catch up on. I think we need to start to at least do the very basics that most everywhere developed country has adopted.
