Friday, 15 January 2021 23:59Right, no new questions on the LJ Friday Five, so here are the questions from F.riday5.com!
1. Which slang term from your youth, no longer in common use, do you remember fondly?
Honestly, as I'm writing/answering this in English, I can only say "within the use of the English Language"... which, as a kid (i.e., "back then"), no, I didn't use slang when speaking in English. In Cantonese there was one 頂, I guess the equivalent is the verb form of the F-word.
2. What slang do you still use, ‘though it’s no longer in common use?
Same answer as #1 above.
3. Which current (or sorta recent) slang terms do you particularly like?
I'll admit I use a little more slang nowadays. I do drop the F-word on occasion, but I actually like "bloody". Perhaps a Harry Potter influence? "It's bloody brilliant!" Which as I'm writing about it, it reminds me, I had heard my Dad say something like "bleddy" instead; I guess he was trying to say "bloody" but sort of mispronounced?
4. Which slang terms, past or present, do you especially dislike?
Dunno, I don't like the 4-letter C-word. I mean any derogatory term to call people is always bad, but I'm pretty OK with arse, arsehole, ass, asshole, little shit, twat, and all that, but I really dislike the C-word.
5. What slang terms are specific to your geographical region?
I really wouldn't know. I guess it's not so much as "pure" English slang in this geographical location... there's of course a lot of Cantonese slang. Hm.... well, I know! There's a new trend now to make really intentional WRONG translations in video subtitles. Usually the original language is talking about some regular things, but the translated subtitles are all rubbish, some even incorporating the English language. The easiest one for me to write here is on9. Makes no sense in English, but the sound of on9 ("On" as in English "On", and "9" as in Cantonese) sounds like a particular slang in Cantonese (erm.... "dumbf*ck" is the most approximate meaning I can think of).
