*The New* Liquid Gold - Kürbiskernöl
Monday, 30 August 2021 00:01So, the parents hosted another dinner for a cousin and his family the other night (cue the mental breakdown on plates and china because we had NOTHING that had 8 neat pieces of). It was spaghetti night because my... erm... cousin-niece? Cousin-once-removed? Meh, I'll just say my niece, she's officially the youngest in that generation of the family, so sort of the baby of the family (sort of like me in my time). Anyway, so my niece likes the spaghetti my Dad makes and she wanted to play with Frankie, so that's why Mom hosted this spaghetti dinner night. You can see, there's only 7 patterned plates and the 8th is a plain white one because... one of those patterend plates broke I don't know 20 or some years ago or so.
Dessert was home-madeice cream Parfait (Dad insists it's handmade and it's not an ice cream, it's parfait) with our usual Pumpkin Seed Oil. It was glorious of course.
Our bottle of pumpkin seed oil was running low, and my friend with her cake shop sister tried to check with the importers in Macau and nobody in town imported this, so I had the brilliant idea to take a gander in Taobao to check it out. I saw quite a few pumpkin seed oil listings, but they looked wrong because the oil was yellow. I adjusted the search term to Austrian Pumpkin Seed Oil and voila, there was a couple of choices, but I liked the information that one of them provided. It states the difference in color and the type of pumpkin that the Austrian pumpkin seed oil (left) and the Chinese pumpkin seed oil (right) use.
So after much deliberation, well, it was really a choice between 3 main brands, this Hamlitsch, Nebauer, and Deimel. In the end I went for Hamlitsch because it was being dispatched from Fujian, Fuzhou, whereas the Nebauer listing was being dispatched from Wuhan, Hubei. Deimel was priced super expensive, so I didn't look too deep into it. I was a tiny bit concerned with receiving stuff from Wuhan, as you know, not sure about the Covid thing. But I'm also happy I decided to write this post because as I was searching for information from these 2 brands I found out they do have online shops, so I should go through the T&C and see where they ship to. And after checking, Hamlitsch doesn't ship internationally possibly because of their glass bottles packaging, so I will check out Nebauer next time.
And well, I must say, Pumpkin Seed Oil, or Kuerbiskernoel (Kürbiskernöl) is indeed liquid gold LOL. I haven't checked the official channels thoroughly, but for that 500ml of pumpkin seed oil, I paid around MOP$280 (around USD$35). Hamlitsch lists their 500ml to sell at around EUR$15, but I can't use that to compare because that doesn't factor in shipping, and I can't estimate that either because they don't ship internationally. Besides, through Taobao, I'm essentially paying double shipping because stuff get sent to China first, then to Macau.
