Never, ever,… and I mean ever ever… had I thought I would start reading a Novel in Chinese. Well, apparently, yes, I’m reading a Novel in Chinese. It’s interesting how I could read quite a lot (perhaps the novel is aimed at youngsters, so they don’t use so much hard words).
I noticed that the Taiwanese Chinese is quite easy to read, in terms of their terminology and their casual slang. For Cantonese, it can get really slang-y, but in Taiwanese Chinese, it’s slang, but still not overly so.
I’m also getting a lot of help from this Cantonese Character look-up site. It actually reads out the sound… so I’m sort of, learning it the triple way: 1) Guessing the sound (by trying to understand the whole phrase first), 2) Guessing the reading by the meaning, and 3) Listening to the voice sample on that site, and determine whether it’s a word that I know. There are some harder words to guess, like names, as those are transliterations of the Japanese (which in itself is a transliteration of a roman/latin/english name again), so it’s hard to guess by context.
So far, it’s been pretty exciting and fun for me to read this. I’ve spent 2 or 3 days reading this, and finally I’ve finished the introduction by the author Kanzaka, and the foreword by the Taiwan translator (or perhaps editor?), and also the first 30 or so pages. It’s also quite easy for me to grasp what I’ve read so far because I’ve actually watched the anime like… so many times..!!!
Anyway, yes, I’m having a lot of fun reading Slayers in Chinese. I hope to finish this on then read the Japanese one I ordered from the internet the other day. Yippie!
