It's been some time I did this... The Friday Five! [livejournal.com profile] thefridayfive

1. Do you have good manners?
I believe I do. I make sure I say please and thank you. I use softer words whenever I could. Even at the table, despite being brought up in a very Asian environment, I follow the western table etiquette (e.g. you push the rice with your knife onto your fork, and you eat it from the fork, unlike all Chinese people here that simply spoon it with the spoon).

I'm very disappointed in the way the youngsters talk - no matter on the phone, in an interview, whenever... etiquette is extinct.

2. Did your parents support your career choice?
My Dad sort of leaves me alone about that. My Mom definitely doesn't want me to keep this job. She wants me to take a government job. I don't want a government job.

3. When in your life have you been a leader?
A couple of times - I was the vice chairperson of the Religious Affairs Committee in my last three years in High School (don't let it fool you, I'm hardly religious - in my Mom's eyes). In University, I was made the team leader of the Administrative team in our Final Project. I was promoted to lead a small team in my first job. Now, with my position, I have to lead a team of 3 people in order to ensure the office runs smoothly.

Though if you ask me, I suck at leading people. I'm more the loyal follower type. Sometimes I really find it hard to do the leading thing.

In my personal life though, I seem to always be the go-to person for planning holidays (especially to Europe) and such. I don't mind the planning part, but bearing all costs on my credit card kind of gets heavy when it's a big group.

4. Have you ever been harassed for simply being good at something?
Back in University, there was this guy (or this group of people) who was always backbiting me. I had generally good grades  (GPA 3.3, not too shabby, if I say so myself). Guess what, my good grades are simply by BS-ing. University papers are all about writing a good piece of BS masterpiece. I would sit in the front of the class, listen intently to the lecture, absorb all that I could, then simply belt out a few pages of BS at home. Voila. I got a good grade. It helped that I was fluent in English too.

The guy actually ranted rather vehemently (and I overheard him) "that Kat, who does she think she is, just because she has good grades and sits in the front of the class". *shrugs* If you spent half the time you went playing truant and came back for classes then maybe you'd retain something more.

Oh and one time for the University Open Day, we had to lead visitors on tours. My University is well known for being small with narrow corridors, so my group was sort of stuck in a passage. There was no going front or back, so, I tried to loosen the traffic by re-routing the group to show them the gym (but we were not allowed to do so). This same guy came over and went all "Tut, tut, tut. Don't you know we're not allowed to do that?"

After the event, we sat around the auditorium and he reported my mishap to the lecturer in charge. Lecturer looked at me and asked me to explain myself. I stood up, stated the story simply, and added that "I believe despite it being not allowed, in that situation, it helped to disperse the traffic and let the different groups touring the school go through the corridor."

You know, in short, a load of BS. I was forgiven and given credit for thinking out of the box, being flexible, and responding to unforeseen situations.

Take that, loser. Payback's a b*tch. Oopsie, sorry for my potty mouth. I hate that guy, even 10 years after the incident.

5. Are you a novelty seeker?
I'd like to say yes, but I'm afraid my actions don't really justify it. I guess I like to try new things so that I can find out what I really like, but then I seem to like the older things and so I revert back to the old stuff - be it habits, food, book genre, game type, etc...
