The other day, I was having lunch with my friends J and W, and W mentioned about J's plight on some housing issue. Not my story to tell, I don't even understand most of the story, but anyway, the conclusion of it during our lunch was that, J needs to purchase her own apartment.

Fast-forward a few days, and she sends me a video link of some newfangled apartments in town going on sale, and the agent walked through a studio apartment. She asked me how I liked it, and I answered very honestly, "it looks cool."

She asks if I want to go see it; I saw it as her way to ask me to accompany her (she's a scaredy cat and very timid in everything, always needing someone to accompany her for whatever new thing she has to do). So I said "as you like, I'm free to see if you want to."

The apartment and housing in Macau is a story for another day. Let's just say that it's shit. J contacts the assigned agent, and the spiel of "oh! It went on sale this morning and we've already sold a handful of them!" J wants to bring our viewing forward, I say sure, up to you, as you like it, and then she frets over a daylight viewing or a nightlight viewing, asking me what I want, coming back to me like a middle person passing on messages between the agent and I.

I explain to her the absurdity of the whole situation with financing. I earn quite a bit more than her, and even I couldn't afford the smallest studio apartment. Well, technically, I could, but it's gonna be tight, and I have to make sure I maintain the same salary or more for the next 35 years. Even I can't guarantee that. After explaining that to her, she goes "but I didn't really like the windows," and "that way the sun gets in the way always," or some other excuses. Which I came to understand as her way of saying, "I didn't really like this, so I'm just going to the viewing for you."

Enough of that bullshit, and I just told her straight, I don't need to buy an apartment, I'm only agreeing to go to a viewing to accompany her.

In the end, I'm not sure if the viewing is still on or not, my guess is not. No use going to see an apartment you can't afford anyway.

Anyway, it's a long weekend because of 1-October, China National Day, and 2-October, the Day after Mid-Autumn Festival which is a public holiday (we get the day after as a holiday because the festivities of Mid-Autumn festival happen at night, and the day after is for recuperating), and then it's Saturday and Sunday. Some companies are lucky and get the Monday as well, because the China National Day is supposed to be a 2-day holiday (1-and 2-October), but my company doesn't do the "compensate for a missed holiday" thing.

The idea of being stuck with a studio apt mortgage for 35 years does not sound good to me at all.

Yep, that’s the situation. Ridiculous. That’s why I’m still living with my parents. At least, finally they were persuaded to give up the “computer room” and convert it to a bedroom, so now my Sis and I have our own space.

I never owned a home before I met my husband. No matter how much I was working I never had enough money to cover a mortgage, insurance and all the crap that is constantly breaking with a house. Of course I don't know how to fix anything myself so that makes it double expensive. Luckily my husband can fix stuff or I'd be moving!
