Anne Brontë

Originally published in 1848, "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" is the second of only two novels written by Anne Bronte. Considered one of the first feminist novels because it challenged the social norms of the Victorian era, "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" is essentially a romantic novel which is chiefly concerned with the relationship between Gilbert Markham, a prosperous farmer, and the mysterious widow Mrs. Helen Graham, who takes up residence in the nearby tumbledown mansion of Wildfell Hall. A classic of the Victorian era, "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" is a must read for fans of the Bronte sisters.

The book itself was a very good read, with rocky beginnings. Rocky beginnings at no fault of the book. As I was reading the Kindle version, I was not aware (my own fault) that the beginning was a summary of the book, instead of the actual book. So, I had my mind geared to read the appropriate era-type of English. But then, it was so colloquial, much like a student writing a book report and summary, I thought I was reading some kind of fanfiction. Until I reached to the actual Chapter 1... then I “flipped” (alright, clicked) back to the cover to see that it’s an annotated version. So phew.

Pretty good read. I enjoyed it immensely. Markham gets a little long-winded many times but that’s all fine, I suppose. Reading this in such modern times though, I must say, the oppression! The inequality! And how I’m glad I live in an era that I do not need to worry about that.

This somehow felt like a reverse Pride and Prejudice in that it was in the point of view of a man, and how impressions and feelings changed, and then he marrying into wealth. Oops. Did I spoil it?

Though indeed I found the coincidences near the end of the book rather amusing.
