Angelology

I just finished reading Danielle Trussoni's Angelology.

In a nutshell: Angels, or a hybrid of Angel-and-Human, called the Nephilim, walk among us. They are the powerful and rich people in society (ha). Although beautiful, powerful and all that, they are being stricken with a sickness... and that is, their wings start to, I dunno... shrivel up and then they die.

Apparently their wings are part of their respiratory system. If you pull at an Angel's/Nephilim's wings, their lungs would collapse and then they die.

I enjoyed the book while I read it. Percival (a Nephilim) was quite interesting - in the beginning. And when he went in for the kill, I totally went "OMG murderous angels!?" But then in the end, I hated him.

The book alternates perspective in every chapter, making it a little annoying to read. The middle part of the book shows a flashback of a certain character's youth, explaining much of the background and history of these Nephilims and how they came to be.

Eventually, they have to look for a key object and their pursuit of this object is where the book starts to go weird.

They introduce a character, of Japanese origin (I don't have the book on hand, but I think the name was Saitou). If all other characters are not Japanese, they wouldn't know to call Saitou as "Saitou-san". Even the narration would call this person Saitou-san. Somehow, it just gave me a WTF feeling.

Then, the search just seemed a little too easy or lucky. So they go to a place to look, and there, a man is standing. "OMG it's you! You hold that letter! I know that letter! OMG There! This is what I should give you!" [gives the thing they need]. "OMG!! Nononono! It's just PART of what you need! There! I know where to get the rest! Here, let me make a phonecall! OMG!!" And then this character just dies because of some other angel-devils or something called Gibborim.

And then the ending. Just. Screams. Book. 2. Is. Coming.
The ending was a bit forced or rushed.
So first Percival goes all "You. LIAR!" when Daniella tells him who Angela and then Evangeline is. And then when Evangeline turns... a bit of a spoiler here... shows that she is a Nephilim, Percival goes all "Let's go meet Sneja (his mom)," he became all happy and stupid just because Evangeline's got such glorious wings. So stupid that Evangline just kills him right there and then. Left us with a cliffhanger.

Verlaine, who within the span of say 2 pages "fell in love with Evangeline when she said she will not return to be a nun anymore" would then, in the span of 1 paragraph "feel betrayed" just because he SAW Evangeline's Nephilistic form. How shallow. Talk about being in the wrong place in the wrong time, for Evangeline. Because there IS going to be more to this part of the story, I think. Verlaine: "You Traitor! You were a Nephilim all along! I dont' lvoe you now. I hate you! ENEMY!" Evangeline: "You wound me so! I killed Percival! I'm going to help the angelologist! I'm not the enemy!" Verlaine: "You are one of them!" Evangeline: "I'm here to help you!"

Oh. the possibilities of all the angst. ha....

And when I re-thought about the whole book, none of the characters had any depth. None of the characters were given enough chance to develope and show themselves. Least of all Evangeline, the supposed heroine of the book.

Yes, the book is gripping, makes you really want to read more and go on reading while you are reading it... but then makes you wanna shout WTF in the end.

I have a sneaking suspicion it will be turned into a movie, and then a new era of Vampies! Nephilites! will rise and a new angelistic/nephilistic cult will be born.

I already dislike the book now.

Anyway, I've now gone back to the classics and am reading Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. Oh my, it's been so long reading Austen, I don't quite understand her. *am ashamed*
