Nicked this off [livejournal.com profile] ninchu's. Trying to get myself back into the reading train, so maybe this will give me a boost!

1. Favourite childhood book?
The Three Investigators Mysteries [wiki link]... LOL I still remember my big book-crush back then Jupe

2. What are you reading right now?
Cesar's Rules: Your Way To Train A Well-Behaved Dog.

3. What books do you have on request at the library?
None. I don't know how to use the request button on the Library website. But I have enough books on hand waiting for me to read anyway, so I don't really need that function.

4. Bad book habit?
Dunno what is considered a bad habit... maybe buying and hoarding books but never getting around to reading them?

5. What do you currently have checked out at the library?
None for now

6. Do you have an e-reader?
Yup, Kindle 3 (or Kindle Keyboard), 3G version. While the Kindle itself seems to be all-language compatible (at least, the English, German, Portuguese, Chinese and Japanese books I loaded do show up properly), the few ebook websites for Japanese books I've found don't provide books in the Kindle format. :/

7. Do you prefer to read one book at a time, or several at once?
Usually one book at a time, 2 at most.

8. Have your reading habits changed since starting a blog?
Actually it's having a blog that helped to keep my reading habit somehow stable.

9. Least favourite book you read this year (so far)?
It's a tie between Promise Me Eternity and Conversations with Mr. Kiki. Why oh why did I ever agree to read an author that has to go knocking on doors begging people to read their own book?

10. Favourite book you've read this year?
Admittedly, I haven't been quite religious with reading this year, so there is only a few books to choose from, but I'll go with The Secret Holocaust Diaries: The Untold Story of Nonna Bannister.

11. How often do you read out of your comfort zone?
I'd like to think I'm eclectic in my tastes, and I had thought that I disliked Non-Fiction... but it turns out that I do enjoy non-fiction books too!

12. What is your reading comfort zone?
Science Fiction and Mysteries

13. Can you read on the bus?
I don't think so. Bus trips here take 5 minutes at most, so there really isn't any need to read on the bus. In fact, any type of commute here takes less than 20 minutes, so, no chance to find out if I could read on a bus.

14. Favourite place to read?
I shouldn't say this, but, at work, when there is nothing to do.

15. What is your policy on book lending?
The official policy that I tell others is "as long as you will return the book to me, take it." The non-official, deep in my own heart thought is "yes, take it, and keep it". There is a reason to it... I don't ever lend books that I haven't read yet, and I don't ever lend books that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE. So if it's a book that was OK and I liked it enough, sure, go ahead and take it. Sharing is loving, right? (and if you never return it, it's fine too, then I have space to put another book). But by default I never lend out my real favourite books anyway, so there's no issue there, haha.

16. Do you ever dog-ear books?
Only school books

17. Do you ever write in the margins of your books?
School books

18. Not even with text books?
School textbooks are one of the best materials to draw and doodle on :P

19. What is your favourite language to read in?
English, because it's the easiest for me. But then again I get amazed at myself for understanding Portuguese, and I also get impressed by myself that I finished a Chinese book. Once upon a time (no, twice!) I even finished reading 2 Japanese books (ok, it was primary school children level, but I read 2 Japanese books, I win, OK?) It takes ages for me to read any language that is not English, but I do put an effort to try :)

20. What makes you love a book?
Never really thought... if I like, then I like, no?

21. What will inspire you to recommend a book?
I know different people have different tastes, so mostly I don't recommend books. I just write about the books I've read here on LJ and on Goodreads, and whoever thinks it sounds good can just help themselves.

22. Favourite genre?
Can I say "Discworld" as a genre?? LOL

23. Genre you rarely read (but wish you did)?
I dunno, psychological or surreal stuff? (whatever genre that makes)... but I'd never understand that either, so better stay away.

24. Favourite biography?
I've read too few to decide a "favourite".

25. Have you ever read a self-help book?
Self help no, self study yes. I have countless Japanese and German self-study books. None of which I've really finished.

26. Favourite cookbook?
I have only one cookbook, Just Bento, and given my not having really read it either, I doubt if it's really a cookbook or just a book about Bentos. Can I say my favourite cookbook is one I've never read? My Dad has his Cookbook Bible, entirely in German, it really looks like a Bible, even the pages inside are so Bible-text-like, and whatever my Dad needs to know about cooking, he goes to his cookbook. I tried to read it once, and saw a recipe that needed Mehl and Zucker and whatever else (happy to say I understood what the recipe asked for, but not the method, hahaha)

27. Most inspirational book you've read this year (fiction or non-fiction)?
See #10 above.

28. Favourite reading snack?
Not a habit to eat while reading.. and neither drinking...

29. Name a case in which hype ruined your reading experience.
Harry Potter. The first 3 books were glorious. The fourth was also good. Once it started to get famous, it totally ruined the series for me.

30. How often do you agree with critics about a book?
There's a reason why I think different people have different tastes. The critics' tastes are not mine.

31. How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews?
I don't like to write a negative review. That's why I'm hiding from those 2 authors... yikes....

32. If you could read in a foreign language, which language would you chose?
Chinese for work, Japanese for my pride, and Latin for everything else. Once I know Latin, many other languages will be somewhat understandable!

33. Most intimidating book you've ever read?
Anne Rice's The Vampire Armand. My first ever gay naughty book. It took me 6 years to read that book. I reached a point where I've had had enough of Marius openly groping at Armand that I had to put the book down... and after some training with gayish stuff, I picked up the book again, only to find that after Armand got turned into a Vampy, all the naughty stuff stopped. Those 6 years didn't have to happen!

34. Most intimidating book you're too nervous to begin?
I loved the movie いま、会いにゆきます so much that without thinking, I bought the novel. Only to find out that I didn't check the book out properly and I bought a REAL novel, not a light novel, not a children's novel... so most probably that book will only sit there and collect dust.

35. Favourite Poet?
Christina Rosetti

36. How many books do you usually have checked out of the library at any given time?
Back in Primary and in Secondary school, the school library only allowed 2 books maximum to be loaned by a student. The habit stuck, so even though the public library allows 5 books max, I just stick to 2.

37. How often have you returned books to the library unread?
I think only twice in my life.

38. Favourite fictional character?
Although my childhood crush was Jupiter Jones, my favourite fictional character (in a novel) is Otto in Terry Pratchett's The Truth (Discworld!). That funny suicidal vampire just cracks me up every time.

39. Favourite fictional villain?
Not sure if that's really the villain... Lucifer in I,Lucifer popped up when I read this question. But I think in this case he's really the hero of the book?

40. Books I'm most likely to bring on vacation?
In my pre-Kindle times, I wouldn't bring books. I'd buy at the airport.

41. The longest I've gone without reading.
Years.

42. Name a book that you could/would not finish.
Catcher in the Rye, or whatever it's called.

43. What distracts you most when you're reading?
My Mom. Even my dogs don't bother me much when I'm reading... it's always my Mom... so that's also why I prefer to read at work: Mom's not there.

44. Favourite film adaptation of a novel?
None yet.

45. Most disappointing film adaptation?
All of them (the ones that I've seen)

46. The most money I've ever spent in the book-store at one time?
Too much...

47. How often do you skim a book before reading it?
I don't skim. I read the back cover, and am tempted to turn to the last chapter, but no, never did.

48. What would cause you to stop reading a book half-way through?
When it can't keep my attention.

49. Do you like to keep your books organised?
Used to do that once upon a time. Then there was a book infestation and I decided not to bother.

50. Do you prefer to keep books or give them away once you've read them?
I dislike knowingly giving a book away, that's why when a friend asks to borrow a book, I hope from the bottom of my heart that they don't return it, LOL.... I'll adapt my mentality to accept giving away books...

51. Are there any books you've been avoiding?
Usually the overly hype ones. You know, Twilight, Twilight, and Twilight?

52. Name a book that made you angry.
Catcher in the Rye

53. A book you didn't expect to like but did?
Escape from Camp 14

54. A book that you expected to like but didn't?
Too many to count!

55. Favourite guilt-free pleasure reading?
I have to agree with [livejournal.com profile] ninchu, Discworld!

haha and the 4 elephants!

I remember the first book I read was Mort; I was maybe 8 at that time and I didn't understand anything about it... after many, many years I read another of the Discworld books and fell in love...

Why did 'Catcher in the Rye' make you angry?

i just couldn't stand the way the guy talked with all those expletives intertwined so intimately in each phrase. It gave me headaches trying to read it. I know in the real world there are people who talk like that, but trying to read it... it was just impossible for me, and fueled to my anger that it was actually giving me headaches! (now that last part is just me being petty, haha)

I've had that reaction to certain works, like the works of David Mamet or so many teen movies where the profanity in used as a form of punctuation. But the profanity of 'Catcher' is so childish, so naive, so frequently misused or used without knowing its precise reference--more about a child trying to act tough in an overwhelming world--that it doesn't bother me--in fact it was somewhat endearing.
