I usually avoid the topic of religion, as I kind of get the feeling that I'll probably be stoned/humiliated/whatever the modern equivalent by religious people (such as my mom), but anyway, this post is not about my belief anyway. A time will come...

This came about when I read the new Pope's name. Pope Francis.

My schooling (kindergarten, primary, and secondary) was in a nun school, run by the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, and our patron saint is St. Francis of Assisi. I loooove this saint. He was kind to animals! So, when I first heard of Pope Francis, I was all "ah! Must be of Assisi!"

Finding out on Wiki that indeed it was St Francis of Assisi made me dance a happy dance in my mind.

Continuing on that thought (regarding my schooling), I have to say that in my mind, Pope John Paul II is still the Pope. I suppose he has been around for toooooo lonnggggg.... In Kindergarten, we had his picture in the school hall... in Primary school we had his picture in the school entrance and the religion room... in Secondary we had his picture everywhere... he was omnipresent for too long (at least for me), from since before I was born, through my formative years and even into my early adult life. It's been ingrained into me.

My colleague has another conspiracy theory saying the cardinals are pushing Pope Francis to his death, electing an old guy with only one lung... I don't know... Maybe?

Since I'm on roll with this topic, I'll also slip in a little known... er, thing about me. St Catherine Laboure is my patron saint. Thinking about it as an adult, I now find it funny when I was a measly little Primary 2 or 3 student when I was asked to choose a patron saint for myself. We get to choose our own patron saint? We get to choose anything at all? Isn't choosing anything the job of adults?

I remember our then-principal, Sr. Marie Lawson, had given me a list of St. Catherines to choose from. I was taking my time to go through their unreadable surnames-or-location namesThen she pointed to Laboure and said, "Well, so you know, Sr. Catherine (the vice-principal) has this one as her patron saint." I loved Sr. Marie and also liked Sr. Catherine, so, you know, as little kids go, I went with whatever Sr. Catherine had.

In hindsight, perhaps if I were told to choose now, then I would have researched a bit? I dunno... maybe that's fate?

Riiiiight... such topic usually only swims inside my head and I'm starting to feel uncomfortable... so I'm calling it a day.

Huh, I thought he was named after Francis Xavier, it's cool that he actually picked Francis of Assisi.

I went to Catholic elementary school as well, and we did the patron saint thing. I picked Kateri Tekakwitha. I basically chose her because I was like "lol Native Americans are cool!" Yeah, not very good reasoning.

There was a possibility of Francis Xavier (Jesuits and all) so it was a pleasant surprise for me too :D

haha, I think that's what things turn out like when you ask kiddies to make that choice... the reasoning can be anything :)

I think it was for the first communion, and now that I think about it, nobody asked me about anything about patron saints in confirmation (I would think you have to fill in a form or info sheet or something)

In the end, I guess the patron saint thing is just something for you yourself to know...

ah, that Portuguese blog... I should gear up and write in that again... I'm just too lazy... and my lack of vocabulary isn't helping :(
