The most recent Friday Five on celebrities isn't really my thing... I don't do celebrities really. Must have come about with all the Bon Jovi and Alan Rickman and that other celebrity that passed 2 weeks ago.

So this is the Friday Five from 3 weeks ago.

1. What makes it easy to talk to someone?
Reception. If the person doesn't really look or act interested, or is distracted, then I lose interest to talk.

2. What percent of the day do you spend talking?
I actually don't talk a lot until someone presses all the right buttons then I get talking. I don't talk much.

3. Who, in your opinion communicates better: men or women?
It's not gender that makes someone communicate better or not, but if we have to go for the stereotypical indicators, I'd say men. Straightforward, to the point, no fuss at all. Unlike women, getting emotional, not knowing what they want themselves, etc...
THAT being said, a lot of the men in my life talk like women and a lot of the women in my life talk like men. So I really think it's the person, not the gender.

4. What topics do you avoid when talking to a stranger?
As the introvert that I am, I don't talk to strangers. In the event I do, it's usually neutral topics, such as the issue at hand (for whatever reason I'm talking with a stranger in the first place). Definitely wouldn't bring anything about home, family, and work into the conversation. Macau is such a small place that it's a little difficult to avoid talking about friends or acquaintances. There's that saying about the 6-degree or something (people you know start to know some common people by the 6th level or something?). Trust me, in Macau, it's a 2-degree or something.

5. Do you like to eavesdrop on other people's conversations?
I love that. Not for the gossip though, just because I can. I have this non-asian face. All Chinese people assume I don't speak Chinese when they see me. So I love eavesdropping because they think I don't understand but then I understand everything. It's like a reactive spying of sorts.

I would love to be able to speak a language that people don't think I can speak - and then respond to what they are saying just to freak them out!

I did just that in Spain last year... we were in Barcelona, in a tube. Some hong kong tourists came in, bickering in cantonese "we are going this direction! 3 stops!" I was standing a little apart from my 2 chinese friends. When their bickering got a bit annoying, I just said in cantonese "this is barcelona, not hong kong, we go the direction of the lights going off (the hong kong tube does it the other way around, the past stations have lights off and the train goes towards the lighted stops), so you are on going on the wrong direction".

The group froze. Then my friend stepped towards me and laughed and laid her head on my shoulder murmuring softly but for everyone to hear "you scared them". And at the next stop the group just ran off the train. Must have been the fright of their lives.

An Italian acquaintance of mine who lives in London was on a bus here when a bunch of Italian students were taking the mick out of his big nose - they freaked when he responded!

Since I come from a place with 120 000 citizens, I have to write it’s like only in Asia you can call a city with a population on half a million “small”.
