Guess what we picked up from the street yesterday while walking the dogs.

A parrot!

I'd love to keep it (I had this stupid urge to teach him say "Polly wants a cracker" yesterday morning. All it said was "hello") but we are realistic and know for a fact that we can't (the cat's proving to be a predator).

Obviously a lost animal (foot still had that ring thing for chains), unless it was a deliberate abandonment. Since my sister works at the local shelter, the parrot is now there.

Was the parrot in a cage or just wandering aimlessly?

It was roaming around, hiding under the parked cars. When we picked it up it said hello, and then we brought out the dog bowl and poured some water. The parrot must have been parched, the poor thing stuffed its head in the water and drank up.

I'm hoping it just broke off the chain (the ring still on the leg), but if someone abandoned it, then it's just cruel...

so far one of the animal rescue staff got so taken by the parrot that he's keeping it. but the shelter says if the owner comes out he has to return the animal.

I'm really hoping it's just an accident that it got lost, if it was abandoned, it'll make my blood boil.

my colleagues at work were amused and they asked me "hey what if you find a lost crocodile?" and I replied without missing a beat "bring it home"

African gr3y parrot, they are smart and easly scared, at least that's what I have read. I never had a parrot, I have just read about them.

That was something of a story. One could imagine that a parrot would fly away and perhaps not find it's way home if they got the opportunity.

indeed, we only knew that was a parrot, and it was only yesterday when I showed the photo to a colleague from south africa that he said "oh! an african grey!" apparently guy used to breed them back home. He wanted the parrot but the shelter made other arrangements already.

our family tends to pick up really random animals off the streets. all our dogs are technically from the street, there's the cat, and back some 20 or so years ago there were a couple of birds, etc etc....
