Life updates
Sunday, 30 October 2016 08:46Just received a message that an uncle in Austria has passed away.
He's the uncle whom I always send a postcard to in my travels. It was pretty hard in his last days but I heard he was given some pain killing fumes (drugs, whatever) so he passed peacefully. He will be missed.
Ah, so I went for my first German class. In some ways it was a disaster, and in other ways not.
Disaster: I'm probably very much behind the syllabus but I plan to work on that this week. I can't even string a complete sentence and they are on the partizip already.
Not disaster: I seem to be the only one who understands the teacher when he speaks in German (and the others have been learning with the guy for almost a year). Also, although I can't seem to recall the correct German vocabulary, but when the teacher provides the vocab and asks what that is, I know it. It's like I actually know it, I can't say it, but I recognise it when I see it.
The commute to Hong Kong for the class isn't half that bad, I think I know the shortcuts by now. Made a new friend and she invited me for a Dim Sum lunch with her husband. However that derailed my plans for the day in Hong Kong so I'll have to re-plan a few things for the next class.
So the week will now have to be planned around my almost daily running (I can run longer without stopping now!) and revision revision and self-learning many of the German tenses.
Which means the first thing I'm going to do this morning is procrastinate home chores and finish up that travel log book then I can concentrate on German.
Doctor Strange this afternoon. Is it good? I saw a skit Benedict did with one of the talk show hosts (one or the other Jimmy or Jeremy or whatever) and I thought it might lean on the boring side.
The Lusofonia is going on right now and I've already been there for the Caipirinha and the Sangria. One of the stalls made a killer chocolate cake too!

Good luck learning German. I always struggle with foreign language. I took Spanish and French in high school and didnt do well in either!

Date: 2016-11-01 01:29 (UTC)what kind of german class are you taking? is it for university? i've been attempting to learn german as well because my partner is of german descent and we'd like to visit germany some day. i've been using a computer game called 'influent' to help me learn basic household nouns, but i'm going to start rosetta stone soon. i'm good at memorizing nouns but terrible at learning the grammar of new languages.

The Lusofonia is a yearly 3-day event where all (or most) Portuguese-speaking-countries representatives come together and do a, I don't know, fair or bazaar type thing. So there's a Portugal stall, a Cabo Verde stall, Brazil stall, etc... I love the caipirinha sold there (Brazil, and way stronger than the wimpy equivalents in bars here), and the Sangria at the Portugal stall is always free :-D
Thank you! I really have to gear up and work on at least the vocabs for now!

Oh, I'm just taking German for the kick of it. I've tried to self learn for some time, but always gave it up after a while and thought going to an actual class would make me more serious about it. It'll be useful when I go traveling, but even then I was able to survive in Austria (I'm now remembering the incident in Salzburg when I dealt with the lady at the B&B and she spoke no English and I no German LOL, and we persevered and managed to agree on a price). It's probably not going to help me much in Germany (I doubt 3 classes will make me learn and get fluent at using anything).
I'm also good with nouns, it's always the grammar that gets to me...
