Not-quite Wordless Wednesday 19-July

Not quite wordless because this is gonna get a bit wordy. Coz I've got a bit of explaining to do, in case anyone is interested.

So, remember all those "America First, *wherever else* Second" videos when Trump just became president? Here's one on Macau.

First off, the accent, or the way they speak the English, is so very Portuguese-y Macau-ish. There's this intermittent add-ons (such as "quer dizer", "pofa", "sacrista", "caraças") that just makes this whole monologue so... homey to me.

• 0:42 - "wander around this part of almighty China" - what a shoeshiner LOL


• 1:08 - "dou m ji nei kong mat 9" WTF LOL LOL LOL 都唔知你講乜鳩 LOL it's like "don't know what the f*ck you are f*cking talking about". The last word 鳩 (reads like "9" in Cantonese) is the equivalent of the cuss word dick and f*ck. Because "Macau" actually does sound like "乜鳩" in Cantonese. Take it as "F*cking what?" or "What the f*ck".


• 2:44 - I didn't know that LOL "Roda de Cadeira" they flipped the word "Cadeira de Roda" LOL. So it's supposed to be "Wheelchair" but they butchered the word to "Chair-wheel". And Portuguese is the official language here. Geezus....


• 2:52 - absolutely no idea what that signage wants to say coz they so butchered the Portuguese... LOL


• 2:53 - more mispellings of important notices


• 3:10 - a dig at our really poor SIs (simultaneous interpretors). The phrase "Passear pelo jardim" does not exist in Portuguese idioms or phrases or whatnot. It means "walk around the park". The true meaning of this Cantonese phrase is "wasting time going off topic and digressing"


• 3:23 - "Chupa ovo" LOL it's the way it's read. The subtitles in English did quite a good job in conveying the difference... the Portuguese would read it as "Shupar ovo" (or "xuck an egg"), but in true Macanese Patuá it'd be read as "Chupa ovo" (think of the English "chuck"). Literally it means to go suck an egg, but I think the true meaning is something like go fuck yourself, or something like that. Oh, and that's a famous local doctor too, the old guy there.


• 3:37 - LOL chipí is like grabbing or squeezing something I think. Pachacha, it's the first time I heard that, but all the same, LOL


• 3:55 - the poor Jorge Alvares statue, LOL... and what they said is true too.


• 4:04 - Big Cannon Fong - that f*cker is a local legislator with some really f*cked up views. I remember a few months back, the Legislative Assembly was discussing about laws for Domestic Violence. This guy was against, citing "it's always the woman's fault. If the man is angry and beating her up, and she is talking back, then of course the man will beat her more! She should just shut up!" Really radical opinions.


• 4:24 - usually, when I say I'm going to China for some shopping, it's to this mall. It's literally just 2 steps after crossing the immigration in China side.


• 4:48 - 4:52 - I'm not sure about the boat company case, but the Green Bus and the Green Airline stories are just sad. The Green Bus was a joint venture between a French company and someone local. Tender was opened for 2 licenses. Coz they were "newcomers", they were bullied, despite having submitted their tender properly and in a timely manner. Whereas another local old-time company missed the tender deadline but still got a license. So the Tender was to issue 2 licenses but in the end they issued 3 licenses because the local old-time company made some fuss about something. In the end, the "newcomer" got bullied so much, they were forced to shut down. (really long back story but I'll skip it)


• 4:59 - This video was made a few months back, but they are right as in the local government killed Uber. They will cease operations starting, coincidentally, tomorrow.


• 5:05 - by here they're just digressing I guess.... just linking the two "golden" words.


• 5:40 - Minci - delicious local dish


• 5:41 - "All the 'chau chau lau lau' (吵吵鬧鬧)" take that as... "etc..." but read in a very Macanese way (not Cantonese, not Portuguese. It's like an indicator. It's a chinese phrase, but the way he said it, a Macanese would know right away it's a Macanese saying that)


• 6:17 - "the special one" I guess they are also playing with the status of Macau - "Special Administrative Region"

So that was fun, wasn't it?

I'm not so good at Portuguese... in fact, I didn't think much about alta tesão until you commented and then I checked it out..... hahaha my Portuguese level is really elementary.
