A shoddy tattoo experience
Saturday, 18 November 2017 20:19I went to do my tattoo today.
The final outcome of the tattoo isn't exactly nice, but I like it because it is a quote that I say to myself everytime I go through difficult times.
However, the experience itself, it sucked.
To start from the beginning:
1. It's locally well known tattoo parlour. The owner is very experienced, won awards and whatnot. My friends all recommended them.
2. I sent them a message saying I want a quote tattoo, I gave them the quote, gave them freedom on the design as "type text or script up to your expertise". They ask me to go for a consultation.
3. I go for the consultation and it all felt half arsed. I was asked if I was asked to choose a font. I said it was up to your design. She gave me a website to choose fonts. I say again it's up to their expertise as I know there are certain limitations to tattooing (like they can't do super tiny tattoos), she says just choose a small font. By the end of the consultation I find out she isn't the one going to do my tattoo (WT bloody F). In the end, the whole conulstation was merely "did you choose a font?" and "we can book you in for this date" and "please pay deposit" and I got sent home.
4. I feel weird about that but well, I choose a font (strategically clever choice too, I applaud myself). I send them a message with the font I chose. They reply asking when my booking I'm booked for. (more WT bloody F)
5. I did a final check if the quote and changed it a bit due to grammar (it's originally a French quote, I searched an English one but then last minute I checked the grammar). Sent them a message, they said ok.
6. Today, I go in. I'm told the font I choose can't be super small sized and that he has to blow it up a bit. I check the quote, they used the first quote I gave them. I said it's wrong. So they changed it. I checked again, all ok. Then it was placement, we measured the strip. The quote has to go around my wrist twice. I asked if the font can get tighter, but he said the t's and the p's forced the lines to be far away, he can't put the lines closer.
7. Okay, final outcome his tattooing is good, but the whole experience sucks and in the end he actually had a wrong spelling. I checked his printout and it's correct, so it was him. But the font I chose is scriggley to start with so unless you really look you wouldn't notice there's a misspelling (thus, strategically clever).
The quote:
In the depths of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.
(I always knew the quote as that, but then I searched for the proper quote and it was "In the depth of winter", but I mulled about that over the 2 weeks after the consultation and finally I dug up some grammar and I confirmed it being "In the depths of winter")
The mispelling is on the "an" in "an invincible summer". He wrote the "a" like an "o", but I also compared it to the "o" on the "of", and that's not the "o" of that font I chose. So it was the guy that somehow screwed it up. (WT bloody effing F)
Anyway, but I'm not upset about that (as I was clever about that). This is the tattoo I've thought of for over 3 years and I got the quote on me. The experience itself sucked, as with all the praises on them, I thought they would actually come up with a design first and not just everything being half-arsed. I expected better from them. Perhaps I really should have gone and done the tattoo in Seoul, despite it being illegal there haha.
The next fun thing would be to hide this as long as possible, hahaha, because I'm not allowed to have tattoos at work... I'll need to get myself some new wardrobe items. I need long sleeved shirts for work now XD
