Audible

I’ve finally succumbed to this Audible thing.

I just figured that since I’ve been listening to so many podcasts, and now I’m a bit lazy about sorting out what I’ve listened to, and what I haven’t (because, for some reason, my apps are not syncing between devices so I don’t know what I’ve listened on in other devices, etc…). So I signed up to Audible (free for the first month) just to see how I will take up with audiobooks.

I’ll be the first to admit that the idea of audiobooks abhorred me when I first heard about them. “Why would you want to listen to a book?” was my thought back then. Now, as I don’t have time to sit down and read, I thought I could try out listening to a book while I’m working on stuff.

I’m already finding that it’s not a particularly bright idea as my mind will either focus on listening or focus on what I’m working on. That’s what they say, isn’t it, when you try to multi-task, you don’t get anything done.

It’s not that bad when I’m just sitting around, but that actually defeats the original purpose I thought of. I’ll still prefer to read rather than listen to an audiobook, but I’ll have to work around some scheduling and see how to actually make it work around my schedule.

I’ve finished a set of “Audible originals” X-files thingie. Weeellll. When the X files was a thing years ago, I never watched it. Oh, I knew there was a show called the X files. I recognized the 2 characters (Scully, Molder), knew it was aliens and mystery-related, but I’ve never actually watched it. So, this series they refer back to many cases which I haven’t watched, but it was still ok. It was still understandable. And then I find out there’s more to the series. So I’ll wait and see if I’ll actually keep the account. If I keep the account, then I’ll get the rest. I doubt I have the patience to watch the TV series right from the beginning, I don’t think so, so I’m not counting on finding out what was going on before.

Instead I’m on a book called “The Forgotten Garden” by Kate Morton. I’m still a bit uncomfortable calling it a book, and saying as if I’m reading it. I can’t help but feel I’m really cheating, hehe. I’ve already forgotten the details of “The Secret Garden” (despite it being a book I read a couple times as a kid) so I can’t tell what parallels there are it takes to the classic (as I read the reviews on Goodreads).

I have tried listening to books a couple of times, but I found that it is not something for me. It is hard to find a reader who's voice and manner of reading won't annoy me. And same as you, I can either listen or do something, only it is worse - if I am not listening, I ignore sound completely, which defeats the whole idea.

I signed up for Audible a few months ago too. I wanted a book that wasn't available at the library, so I did the free trial, but now I don't want to give it up. I like the new Originals they started this month. I usually listen when I'm cleaning, since it's kind of motivation to do housework when I don't feel like it.

Oooh I’m interested in the x files stories! I like the show, but only the “monster of the week” storylines. I don’t like the main arc about government conspiracy.

Have you tried just listening to podcasts? I used to have audible but I found that there were so many podcasts I loved, I could just listen for free. I listen to This American Life, Modern Love, Strangers, Serial, Sword and Scale, and Savage Love!

Oh I started with podcasts and binged on them for a while, so I’m all caught up on the ones I’m subscribed to. Since I took to podcasts so nicely I thought I’d try a bit of audiobooks.
