Food temptations
Sunday, 28 June 2020 23:42I don't know what triggered it, but two days ago, my Dad suddenly said "I'll make cinnamon rolls today." So, I waited with bated breath, for cinnamon rolls.
Just after lunch, Mom opened a bag of dried figs to eat one and gave me one. Dad asked her for the figs for "his baking." I was wondering already. Cinnamon rolls, figs?
Well, what came out was this abomination... Danish pastry with dried fruit. For the record. I hate dried fruit. The most hated dried fruit ever? Raisins. There were no Cinnamon rolls in sight.
I asked "what happened with the cinnamon rolls?" And Dad answered "Mama doesn't like them." I looked at Mom accusingly and she retorted "I did not tell him to not make cinnamon rolls. I also heard him say he will make cinnamon rolls this morning."
A minor WTF moment with my Dad, but why am I even surprised? He always does that. Says one thing and does another *shrugs*
Then he proceeded to tell me the origin/history of Danish pastries and how although it's called Danish pastries all over, they were actually brought to Denmark by Austrians during some kind of grand baker strike, and so in Denmark, Danish pastries are called Wienerbrot (Vienna Bread?).
OK, I did a quick search and it seems that Dad's impromptu history lesson is pretty much on point.
And back to his Danish pastries, despite my hated dried fruit, they were actually good. I didn't know Danish pastries can look like that, because most bakeries and hotel cake shops here do the "boat" variant of a Danish pastry (fresh fruits sitting on a "boat-like" fold of the puff pastry). And thus, I learnt something new.
Anyway, I wasn't particularly excited when he said he was going to make more egg tarts / Pastéis de Nata just before dinner today.
This time they looked a lot better than before. The stuffing still didn't taste like his legendary recipe and I said as much. Then he said "oh yeah, I didn't make my recipe. I used the standard book recipe." Jeez! Dad! Everyone says it's your legendary recipe that's good, so practice on it, don't suddenly go do a standard book recipe! What were you thinking?
But gawds the shell was delicious and so so so so so good. I couldn't stop myself. I really shouldn't, but I gobbled up 3 of these egg tarts. Need to do an extra run tomorrow LOL.
