Over here where there's much Chinese influence, people are obsessed with this 11.11 Singles' Day. Because you are such a loser that you are single, so you need to do lots of shopping to compensate your loneliness. And thus shops push out endless 11.11 promotions and sales. Think something like the US Black Fridays (and then I ask, doesn't Black Friday mean Friday the 13th? Apparently there are other meanings... thank you Wiki again)
Bullshit.
I always knew 11-November as the "São Martinho" day as my Mom liked to talk about eating chestnuts and bonfires and something called "magusto" (I still have no idea what that is; and after checking it's chestnuts roasted in a bonfire or something like that... LOL talk about not knowing your language)
This year though, Dad pitched in to say something about the day, so I thought I'd keep a record for myself so that I am in the know.
11-November is St. Martin's Day [Wiki Link]
Also known as Funeral of St. Martin, Martinstag, Old Halloween, and other names.
Per my Dad, in Austria they roast a Goose for St Martin's day. Since Goose is hard to find, Dad made a Duck Rice today (photo on left).
Per my Mom, in Portugal they eat roast chestnuts for St Martin's Day. So we roasted some chestnuts for snacks in the evening.
So. A cultural lesson for myself. Maybe over-generalized though, LOL.
