[livejournal.com profile] jeune_fleur shared a tweet, which essentially says

“Russia began active preparations for disconnection from the global Internet

No later than March 11, all servers and domains must be transferred to the Russian zone. In addition, detailed data on the network infrastructure of the sites is being collected."

So, again, it's the accessibility that has me worried.

Also on the news I heard VISA, MasterCard, AMEX are all cutting or rejecting Russia, so I suppose the April payment won't go through.

I guess 19 years worth of entries was too much for Dreamwidth. Things are just not transferring over. I've backed stuff up on the Blogbooker thing though. Just did the Word version, might go and do the PDF version. It was like almost 3000 entries.

I'm still undecided on whether to Dreamwidth of Not to Dreamwidth. I'm https://elusivek.dreamwidth.org/ there though. Facing the whole setting up of the journal again feels daunting... makes me want to return to Wordpress. At least, the importing seems to be working on Wordpress! (Been running the import for almost 2 days straight and it seems something IS going through). If I make any decision I will update both here and DW and WP....... (argh, just figuring out image hosting and all that is going to be a pain)

I don't know whether to DW either. I've had this journal for 16yrs and I've been on LJ since 2001. DW isn't importing, so what to do? The idea of starting all over again is too much.

LiveJournal is already on Russian servers so we don't need to worry about anything changing there. Also, i really doubt that if Russia does put up a Great Firewall that they will bother to block people from outside Russia getting in. What benefit would they get from that? Just like mainland China, they will have their Great Firewall to stop people inside the country from accessing the free press, not from stopping foreigners to use their web services. Arguably, it is in the interests of an authoritarian government to make sure foreigners can still get in, because it means money coming into the country, and the potential for having the domestic propaganda also influence the thinking of foreigners too.

That said, the payment issue is a real pain in the ass. I pre-paid a year in advance before the sanctions hit because i figured things might be tough for a while. I just hope that if the sanctions are still going strong in 2023, they will have found another way to accept payments by then.

Phew, that is a load off my worries then.
Still, the payment issue is still the hurdle. Guess I have to hope maybe they will accept union pay in future.

Oh, i should also mention that if you just want a journal backup, and you use Windows, [livejournal.com profile] ljarchive is a good tool. The latest version is here: https://github.com/sharpden/ljarchive It backs up super quickly and you can search and read all your old posts and comments. I don't think it can re-upload them somewhere else, but if LJ does disappear suddenly overnight, at least one person (me) will be trying to write some code to re-upload from an ljarchive backup.

Oh….. I don’t use windows… and that looks so complicated hahaha I wouldn’t know where to start even if I’m using Windows haha. Thanks though, I’m sure there are people that would find that useful!

I'm not going anywhere. .I can't stand DW. And if it means shit happens here, then I guess I'll deal with it.

I’m in the same place, can’t decide. I guess I’ll make one and see.

From what I can gather, it just means that they're making sure all their official government sites are on their own servers because of all the hacking they're experiencing. It seems to have been completely misconstrued. None of this should impact on LJ.

I'll be on lj for as long as I can. I do have DW with the same name. I added you. I couldn't get my entries to import. I used to have my lj import to my dw and cross post but the last time anything was posted was from 2016. I was able to manually repost my entries on dw but I only had less than 100 posts to do. Still was a pain and doesn't get your comments.

Dreamwidth had something on their site about livejournal blocking exports to them but that it sometimes reportedly worked for people, so they were leaving the transfer journal page up.
