EDIT A friendly comment on my DW made me realise how my view on depression might be taken negatively. I would like to reiterate that, while I do have a somewhat harsh view of it, it is because of ignorance. I do not understand it. I want to try to empathise and learn to understand it. I was brought up with the mentality of “there is no depression, there is only laziness.” So you are welcome to explain to me how it really is/feels/goes. But I’m not trying to start an argument nor a war nor anything. /edit [livejournal.com profile] thefridayfive

1. Do you think the media have created a negative effect on self image?
Yep.

2. Do you think the entertainment industry is the main reason why there are so many men and women with eating disorders?
Probably?

3. Have you ever had an eating disorder?
I would say no, though my Mom would say yes. I was very focused with my exercise plan in 2018, and managed to drop my weight to a more healthy weight. My Mom thought I was outright skipping dinners, in truth I was simply following 8/16 plan and managed to train my body to go running almost every day. I had a late breakfast, had my usual lunch, and when I got off work, I got a sandwich quick for dinner (within the 8 hours eating time) then I didn't eat anymore. Because the dinner at home usually gets rather late (have to wait for Sis to get off work) so it seemed like I never ate dinner... but in truth I had already eaten, and no matter how I explained that to her, she never believed me *rolls eyes*

Then it was the whole appendities fiasco and ever since then it broke my streak and I got lazy and I'm back to my old unhealthy weight... LOL

4. Do you believe that depression is a disease or an excuse?
I admit I have a rather harsh view on depression and I'm trying to be more open minded... but sometimes the actions of a depressed person just annoys me to no end - but seriously, I'm trying to overcome this way of thought.

5. Do you believe that it is possible to develop depression, or are you born with it?
I think depression is a developed thing... you don't get born with it... it's not innate. Like, you wouldn't say a happy person was born happy? I think?

I know the questions are trying to be more motivational, but my answers are in jest because I don't quite need the motivation, I'm in a good place mentally and physically.

1. What are you moving toward?
My next paycheck.

2. What moves you right out the door?
My eligibility for my paycheck.

3. When did you recently move a scheduled meeting, appointment, get-together, or date?
My own: none, I stick to appointments that I've agreed to.
My boss: it's like, after telling people that he's in a different time zone, I would expect that when you are scheduling meetings, you would take into account his time? But no? Then I have to remind them again. He's over there. Push that to later so that it's bearable for him too!

4. What’s keeping you from moving on something?
I dunno, I don't have anything on hold.

5. What’s a memorable move (successful or not) someone made on you, or a memorable move you made on someone?
This is not a happy memory. It was my cousin's wedding. One of his friends that he invited was our neighbour. He's married and has a kid (or maybe 2?). It was always awkward when we were in the same elevator, like he was trying to be funny and get me to talk. I just greet the neighbours then face away. So during cousin's wedding, I dressed up ironed my hair and all that. This my-neighbour-cousin's-friend had the audacity to tell me, with his wife not far away, "I really want you to come home with me."

I was shocked, I know what he meant, but I also managed to save my face (and probably his), "Yeah thanks for offering the ride home but I drove my car here).

Ouch, that answer to no.4 kind of hit me a bit, tbh. Of course you are welcome to have your own opinions but as a person with depression, it's not so nice to read that one's actions can be seen as "annoying" :(
I am glad you're trying to overcome those views though!

As for no.5...there is a difference between depressive phases/being unhappy about something bad that happened in your life or just generally, and depressive disorders. Those are illnesses you definitely do get born with, like any congenial physical illnesses. So yes, they can be born with, although there is depression that you develop as well.

(I want to emphasize that this comment is not meant to be read in an aggressive tone or to start drama or a heated discussion. I'm just trying to put in my POV from someone who is personally affected by the issues mentioned in the questions. Hopefully that is coming across in the right way, as I am definitely NOT wanting to offend you personally.)

If you have any questions about depression, I'd be glad to answer them! I've been depressed since I was 6 years old. I imagine it can be as hard for someone to understand depression as it is for me to imagine what life is like without depression!
