This hobby is going far
Tuesday, 8 November 2022 14:11This ceramics hobby is going further than I originally expected.
I really am not a creative person. I don't come up with ideas on the spot. So a couple weeks back when the instructor just suddenly announced "your project is to make a set of 3-piece whatever. Mug, cup, plate, bowl, whatever."
I mean. Had he said that at the end of the previous class, then I could have had the weekend of think about it. But he said that in the beginning of that class, so some thinking had to go on.
And then, he said "you should make use of all the methods I've taught". Well. Geez. So I started out with pinching (the regular molding by hand). He said he was surprised. The other course mates used the roll-out method, which gives a much cleaner finish, because you roll out the clay so it's smooth, whereas if I pinch it by hand some parts are gonna be thicker and some parts thinner.
I made cup. Which now I think it's gonna be a bowl, because I overjudged the shrinkage. You can get blinded because of the cat ears LOL. Then I made a mug with a tail, but the tail broke (physics), so I decided to use it as a flower vase instead and just removed the tail. Then I thought to make a very shallow plate to use it like a fruit display bowl or something. But the instructor insisted the mug with a tail idea is great... so he made me make another one but smaller. And then I made that fruit bowl. All cat themed. I just finished painting the 1 bowl. I've sanded down the fruit bowl. The other mug and vase need a good sanding down. It's going to be so boring. But my brain has come up with an epic (in my mind) painting design for the fruit bowl. So....
Tomorrow's gonna be the last class, but the instructor actually owes us 2 more classes because he got covid in the beginning and delayed the start of the class for a week. Anyway, as my bestie C is going to the next class, and I saw there was still vacancy, I went ahead and registered to go on the next class. Once that's done, I'll join as a workshop member so I can just go and make stuff without classes.
Besides, there wasn't enough time to go on the wheel! I very much prefer pottery throwing than pinching and all those other methods. The pieces come out with a smoother finish when done on the wheel.
