Winston Smith lives in a society where the government controls people every second of the day. He fights this world with love. But it's dangerous: love for another person can be punished by death - and Big Brother is always watching.
Orwell's classic story shows that there is no freedom unless ideas and beliefs can be questioned. This is as true today as when it was written, more than fifty years ago.

If I say… I didn’t have 1984 as part of my school curriculum, would you believe it? My cousin dropped this book at my place a while ago, I think it was part of his son’s reading exercise at school, so it was an abridged version. I don’t think I’d have the stomach to read the actual real George Orwell version.
I’ve seen “Big Brother” thrown around here and there in news articles and other places around the internet, didn’t realize it’s from this book, but inherently, I understood that it’s a very good reference to… the country that starts with a C with starry red flag.
I don’t know why I just kept thinking about that country as I read through the book. I don’t know. Country seems would be a little more lenient that… they just off you. The whole reformation program as detailed in the book seems exhaustive, time consuming, money drain, and all that.
What I don’t understand is why he wasn’t vaporized. It’s mentioned his parents vaporized, and a couple of people were, but why reform/brainstorm/whatever him?
It’s a heavy book (even if this one I read was just 70 pages).
