2023 April-May - Hastings, UK (Day 4)
Sunday, 30 April 2023 22:21A couple of people had asked me why Hastings and not Brighton, and, I don't know. When I was doing my research, it was Hastings that just called out to me. One observation of Hastings: THERE ARE SO MANY DOGS! People with dogs! Everywhere! Dog walks! Dog walks! Everywhere we went, everywhere were dogs! And all so well behaved!
I was in my fed-up yeah whatever stage, so I didn't particularly plan for any special breakfast. Told friend we'd just buy something at the station as then we would have an almost 2 hour train trip to Hastings. It was a pleasant ride. Especially when my friend found out the seat she sat in (opposite of me) was not facing the direction that the train was going (I mean, we boarded on the departing station. There was only one way the train could go). I managed to finish the book I was reading too! Nice!
Arrived Hastings. Wasn't sure what to expect at first.
Checked out the local map to orientate myself.
Through this tunnel is the Old Town area.
Stumbled to the West Hill furnicular (sp?). I would have walked up, but, you know, my friend.
Up the West Hill. The view was amazing!
Meandered over to the castle ruins.
The lady at the entrance was nice. She said since the day was beautiful, should we decide to go back with a picnic, she'd let us in, as long as it was before 3.30pm. Lovely offer, but I wasn't going back.

A few interesting placques and signs.
It says no climbing but I didn't climb this. It's level on the backside, I just sat on the ledge and turned around.
Timer shot!
We then walked down the hill.
It was past the main tourist street of the Old Town.
Passed by this church. We peaked inside as I wasn't sure if it was open for tourist (I noticed a few churches now disallowed tourist visits), and a guy came out and said "sure come in and have a look!" So, in I went.
I learn later this is the Saint Clement's Church. I'm a sucker for homemade stuff, and there was a tray of home made jams with price tags on. And they took cash; but I have to comment on the advancement of the church that they also have card payment system for donations. Paid the money for a jar of jam, the guy came over and said "Lovely jam, people come back for them!" okay, if it's good it'll be harder for me LOL. But I like that stuff!
There was some kind of fair/procession/thing going on, but I didn't find out what it was.
On the way to hunting for an internet-recommended Fish and Chip place. Maggie's Fish n Chips.
Oh come on, why?
Apparently, even that place needed reservations, but they also did take aways, so we placed our order.
Walked down the beach to wait for our food.
I sound like a country bumpkin maybe, but I've never seen a pebbles beach. It's all pebbles!
Received the call that the food was ready! Yay! They had the normal haddock or cod as well, but we decided to get the catch of the day. There were 4 fishes, I forgot the other 2, but we ordered the Plaice and the Monkfish. I don't know my fishes LOL, but I'm not sure if that was a lucky guess, or it was the restaurant that filleted them well, but there were absolutely no bones. I think it was the Plaice that had no bone at all, and the Monkfish had one thick long bone in the middle, and the meat was SO GOOD. Definitely the best Fish and Chips I've ever had so far.
Eating in the sun. I'm lucky I didn't end up sun burnt.
Another internet recommended place. Di Pola's Italian Gelato. Yum yum!
Then we went down the Old Town touristy street.
Reached a plaza and again there were people gathered. These people had clothes with bells on the trousers, so there was a lot of ringing when they danced and walked.
Then crossed back to the... not-Old-Town area.
We went to the True Crime Museum. I was amused by the dog sign LOL. Poor doggies, they are all INNOCENT! And there was a whippet or small greyhound visiting while we were there too!. The museum was interesting but I don't think it was very well planned. It seemed to boast a lot of real True Crim exhibits, but the presentations could do better. Some exhibits didn't have much explanation, seemingly expecting that visitors already knew about the case. Well, I didn't.
And some exhibits, like this bullet hole riddled car, had no explanation at all.
The first thing I noticed was the iPhone LOL.

Onwards onwards... Hastings Pier. There's a lot of these memorial benches.
I'd say, even I was at my limit and when we reached the end of the pier I had to sit down for a while.
Nice view.
We had the 19:20 ticket back, and I wanted to see if we could swap for an earlier train (it did say exchangable for a fee), but the ticketing counter was closed, we had an hour to kill, so we crossed to a pub opposite for a drink and some snacks.
How more ditzy and clumsy can one be? Only the most weird things can happen to my friend. Her phone battery was running low, so she hooked up her iPhone to be charged. And guess what, the cable broke off, and the part that goes into the phone for charging was left stuck inside the phone, no way to pull it out. How? Why? Why can all these weird things happen to my friend?
Because she doesn't pay attention to her surroundings.
Anyway, we didn't go anywhere for dinner as friend complained the food was too heavy, so we just got ourselves salad from Tesco and called it a day.
