Hello world, it's been a while, huh. Been to Italy and back for a week. Still haven't got time to sift through my photos as I tried to be strict with myself and decided to mainly take photos on the camera and not on the phone, so I haven't got much to show for now. I've got some photos on IG though. Though I'm wondering if I'm going to have the resilience and patience to actually go through 2 full SD cards of photos LOL.

Anyway.

The trip this time wasn't much fun. My companions were my go-to Europe travel friends. We've been on one Europe trip a year so we knew we fit in terms of habits and such. But this year it's proven that someone's changed.

I was in Italy for 2 weeks but it doesn't really feel like I've seen much, because things were poorly planned, or , wasn't exactly balanced. One of the friends who went on a successful diet now fancies herself something like an IG model or influencer or such, and we other two were like, the two boyfriend/cameraman sidekick *rolleyes* and we had to stay on a location for a looooooooonnnnnnnggggggg time just to get the perfect shot.

It's going to sound like I'm always complaining LOL but yeah. Say, like, Malta. We went to Malta. My plan was to take public transport. Said friend said, "but public transport is unreliable". Made a whole big stink about it. Okay, so we rent a car last minute. Peugeot 108, too small for our 3 bags, but we got everything in, and we thought it would be all fine. But hey, we were staying in Valetta, no cars LOL. We made a quick trip in to drop off the bags then had to drive out to look for car park.

Made a whole show and tell of how "shakey" I'm driving because the brake was acting funny. If I stepped on it full-force it would brake smoothly, but if I touch the brake lightly, it would brake suddenly with a big jolt. I don't get it. She was also supposed to be the navigator but she was always on IG or FB and not giving me directions. I got fed up and let her drive. Speeding, not respecting the stop/give way signs, etc.

And then, Naples and Positano. She simply wanted to go Positano. No other plans. Okay. I suggested a day tour trip that would take us to Pompeii (learn some History), go through Sorreno, Positano, and along the Amalfi Coast and back. Nooooo. "I don't like tours. They restrict me to a schedule."

Okay.

Ferry from Napoli to Positano. Just Positano. Nothing much on Positano. Ferry ride back to Napoli. That was that. Boo.

Anyway, I shall not drown too much on the negatives.

So I went to the KoolTai music festival last night. It was a Noon to Midnight thing. I went around 2pm to pick up the tickets I ordered, then sat in for a bit. Lisa Ono was good. Then I had to get back home to for the dogs then back at night. Corrine Bailey Rae. Jessie J. Hm.... never thought much of Jessie J, but her chatting was charismatic. And then Suede. The real reason why I went. Guess what. Like. Corrine Bailey Rae was supposed to be up on 9pm. She came up 10pm. By the time it was Suede (scheduled 11.30pm), it was like almost 1 in the morning. Exciting crowd.

Untitled

I noticed a lot of artists used cordless mics, but not Brett Anderson. I wonder if he likes swinging the mics. I've been to 2 other Suede concerts, and he was always swinging the mic. I had wondered, when he will finally break one, and he did last night LOL. Last song, Beautiful Ones, he swung the mic a bit, and then the last bit couldn't catch his voice.

Untitled

I did not mention though, that I am sick. I think I caught the flu bug from my Mom. I had a slightly scratchy throat going in, but after the concert I've now lost my voice. The weird thing is, I haven't got a full blown out cough. Just a scratchy throat, and now no voice.

I was researching flights for Taiwan for the Boss and certainly I noticed that 8-December, which is a public holiday here, is on a Friday. So, searching for flights for him turned into just looking into flights for me LOL. I got my flight tickets for 7-December flying out and the 10-December back, which, upon further reflection, I should have chosen to go on 8-December early flight in order to save a night of hotel. But. Anyway. What's done is done.

But.

I don't feel the drive. The FIRE. The excitement. There were a couple moments I wanted to ask my friends if they wanted to come, but I sort of felt like if I do so, they'll hijack my itinerary and do everything else. But they are the ones with the knowledge of what is good and especially the food. So I'm still torn with what to do about it.

Although I booked a hostel but I didn't feel like staying in a dorm with strangers, so I booked a private room. But thinking about that, then maybe I should have booked an actual hotel, but the hostel I booked looks a lot nicer and newer than hotels in the area. I won't be able willing to afford the hotels that my Boss stays at. So there. Still stingy I guess? Or just down to earth, I guess.

The plan? There is no plan LOL. Well, take part in that lucky draw to see if I get the NT$5000 card LOL. I'll probably go to a different night market 2 nights (Raohe and Shida). Would like to spend some time in Eslite. But geez, it's been so long, I don't remember where is where. There's this specific street I'd like to go to, but I don't remember the name, nor the MRT station name. Beitou looks interesting, I'd probably go take a look at that fancy library. I'm kind of thinking of going to Jiufen but once I start imagining the hoards of people then I just lose interest.

I've done the Pingxi route previously as well (that was a gutsy trip LOL). Tamsui is supposed to be another touristic spot but I've been there twice and.................... no comment. A friend brought me to Wulai (sp?) once and I don't think I have the guts to go alone, and besides, I don't normally go to places I've been to before.

Ximendeng, 101, and those usual trendy spots, I'll probably skip. So coming to think of it, there doesn't seem to be much. Anyway.

Maybe my interests will take hold later again. We'll see.

Hong Kong salvaged

Ah, sorry, got busy the last couple days.

So after that regretful trip to Hong Kong and the underwhelming feeling of the concert, the following day was salvaged.

I was originally feeling a little sour about my Sis standing me up, but then someone saved me - the Boss' Hong Kong driver!

Since the Boss was on some other work trip, the driver had some free time, and, we went for breakfast, then ran some errands, and then, he took me to see the family home (Boss once said it's haunted and that he'd bring me there to show me the haunting. Instead, driver took me and I saw 2 HUGE SPIDERS!)

Then there was some time, so the driver drove me to the southern shoreline of Hong Kong. It's basically like in Macau but going to Coloane island. The coolest part was that road that's a dam wall, it was so nice! It was a one-way road that needed a traffic light to control the right of way, so there was no way to stop the car to shoot a photo, so at least, I've seen it and the scene is in my mind.

Untitled

Stopped at a beach and seriously, it's better kept than Macau beaches. I'm going out with a friend tomorrow and hopefully we'll get to Coloane, and I'll shoot some photos, if it works out. Tomorrow is the Tung Ng Festival, aka the Dragon Boat Festival, people will go 游龍舟水 (swim in the Dragon Boat water) so the beaches will very likely be full.

Untitled

Then driver took me for lunch at a local hongkie style coffee shop "Cha Chaan Teng" 茶餐廳 called An Lee 安利 and the popular thing is ox tripes/offals/organs. Photo behind a cut.

Nearby was a Chinese temple. By three in the afternoon, I think I had taken up enough of his time so I said he can drop me off at the IFC so I can go have a look at City Super (a fancy supermarket with a lot of import goods) since I saw an ad for a Korean yoghurt, but it costed an astronomical amount, so I just gave the bottle of yoghurt a stink eye (HK $98! USD $13!!!!!!) and left.

Untitled

Passed by an M&S and got my hands on some PLAIN scones and also a bag of Dino Crumpets. It's so cute! But the name crumpets made me think it'd be crunchie like a cookie or biscuit, but it's really just like... the "muffin" bread of a Sausage McMuffin.

Untitled

elusivek: (plane rainbow)
Oh boy. I knew I'd regret coming to Hong Kong.

It's nothing very bad. I was just feeling uneasy all day yesterday and yeah, I guess my uneasy premonition came to fruition.

So the day started beautifully. Well, just before I walked Frankie his morning walk, it rained a bit, and then it stopped, and then we went again.

Untitled

The ferry ride was surprisingly not packed. I guess people have already sort of gotten used to being able to get out of Macau by now so there's no more travel frenzy? Just a guess.

Untitled

First order of business after getting off the ferry was to hunt for lunch. I searched and saw a somewhat interesting Mexican place, but it was packed when I walked by, so I continued walking around the Mid-Levels.

Untitled

Love how the tree is just climbing over the wall.

Untitled

Found a place serving Nepalese food, so I went for it. The Naan was nice, a bit crispy, I really liked it. The curry was just right, not too spicy.

Untitled Untitled

Then I made my way to the place I booked a room to stay the night. Ugh. That was a poor decision. Originally, I booked a proper hotel near the concert venue, but that area is sort of newly developed so nothing is around, and in the end, I decided to book a place that's more in the Yau-Tsim-Mong area. On the booking website and the photos showed a pretty nice and nifty place, but it's just some renovated rooms in a depilated building. I sort of regretted it once I saw the outer building, but I figured, I'm not here to enjoy the room. I'm here to enjoy the concert, then have a bed to crash the night, then go home tomorrow.

It's those (probably famous) "cubicle apartments" in Hong Kong. So they take an apartment, and then partition them into small cubicles. I think a regular hostel has even better designs than this. Ugh. It was all pseudo-fancy, with keypads and all that.

So I was given the code to a room, and she led me to it.... to a 4-bed mixed dorm room. I said "No, I booked a double room." And the lady said, "yeah, this is a double room." Then I said, "I know i did not book a dorm bed. I specifically booked a private room with facilities."

What do you know, she goes to the next door, and says loudly the key code, so everyone can hear, and puts me in a room that's.... I guess it's a standard bedroom size in Hong Kong, but the toilet's amazing. /sarcasm/ I have a narrow rectangular area with a sink and a toilet and a shower head. There's not even a shower stall, so I'm going to have to shower with the toilet *facepalms*

Well. A bit of a change of habits is in order. I usually shower then go to bed, and wash my hair in the morning when at home. I'll just shower and wash my hair at the same time tomorrow morning. The toilet/shower cubicle is not going to get dry overnight, so I might as well wash up tomorrow and then don't have to worry about it.

Anyway, after getting the room, and since the lady yelled out my key pad code, I was wary to leave my iPad in the room, so I had to take it with me. Let people steal my change of clothes if they want to. But... I'm keeping my iPad.

Went out to Tsim Sha Tsui area, walked a couple of shopping malls, and then hunted for an early dinner.

Untitled Untitled

ExpandTalking about food (meat) here so those sensitive can skip )
Then I did the gutsy thing and trusted the google maps public transport information and took a bus to the event venue. I'm not going to say I did not enjoy the concert. It was nice, but I guess I wasn't a real big fan of the artist. Besides, I liked her songs from 10 years ago, and now her style has changed much, so... well at least she did have 3 tracks from her 10 years ago style. I suppose the set list was good? We got a set of 3 songs for the encore. Oh, and the funny thing was, the audience had those light sticks and waved it... and there was one particular upbeat song that.... everyone was waving it at the wrong beat LOL

Untitled

Concert over, I followed again the google maps suggestion and took a bus back. Way faster than taking the MTR, really. Here's an open corridor of the place I'm going to spend the night in. At least, so far, it's not noisy outside.
Untitled

Tomorrow morning I have a breakfast appointment with the boss' Hong Kong driver. Let's see what gossip he will share with me.

Right.

Travel Trio has decided our next long-haul trip. Italy for some 10 or 12 days.

Flight ticket prices look good for now (looking at around USD 950 or EUR 900 on Emirates). I'm just going to check with my regular travel agent to see if she has a better deal, if not, we might do the OTAs instead.

With the draft itinerary of what cities to visit, I've booked all hotels/apartments accordingly. Everything can be cancelled until October, so if nothing better comes up, we have some passable stuff on hand. I'm just not sure about going to Positano in October (by far the most expensive one night compared to all the other places), but since now we are going to properly look into the itinerary, we'll probably change or fine-tune stuff.

Does anyone know if in Italy (Rome/Florence/Milan) and Malta, it's like in the UK? Everything cashless? I do have some euros on hand, and am on the fence if I should just chuck them all into the bank with some on hand or not.

That reminds me I have to look more into Malta; should we rent a car or is public transport a breeze over there... I dunno. We'll see.

Catch up!

Finally sitting down to go through my inbox and such. I've missed SO MANY BIRTHDAYS! I'm so sorry for missing out on sending birthday wishes.

Still reminiscing the good parts of my vacation, and putting my thoughts together:
1. Not going on a "free walker" trip with this particular friend anymore. Only group tours.
2. Highly recommend this Wanderlog app and website. Even just using the free version, it was useful. I created my own account and a dud account (to say "friend") and, I put all my expenses in the app. Those that are just for me, was left at that. Those that were shared expense got marked to split evenly (I didn't try if a custom percentage would work, but since most things are 50/50 anyway) and by the end of the trip, I just clicked on debt summary and it calculated, accurately, what my friend owed me. I did a separate manual/excel expense list and came out to more or less the same figure. More or less because I was doing everything according to the bank issued statements with actual currency conversion rates to MOP, while the app calculated the standard conversion rate to HKD. And then calculating the app HKD rate to my MOP rate, it was still 1.03, which is practically the standard HKD to MOP rate used locally. So. It's accurate.
3. To those who considered me silly for continually complaining about the UK not accepting my cash, the GBP rate I had my cash was at a lower rate, than the bank credit card enforced rate. So, it actually came out more expensive to use the credit card rate than using just cash. *haaarrrrummmmmppphh!*
4. I gained a good whole 5kg on this trip. Ugh. We didn't really have 3 square meals every single day, and we walked so much. Whyyyyyyyyy. Anyway, I've trimmed back down 3kg. Work on the last 2!
5. The Lemon jam or marmelade I got from that church in Hastings is really good! I like that it isn't just sweet like commercial jams are.
6. So far what I miss the most is... the milk. We bought a carton of fresh milk every other day, because I drank a lot of that milk (maybe that's where my 5kg came from haha). So creamy! Not like the processed milk here....

I have an upcoming trip in June to Hong Kong. It was really just a concert that I wanted to go, but I wasn't sure how late the concert would last, and since the venue is somewhere where in my knowledge it's a bit out there so I wasn't sure about transport and such... so I decided I'd spend the night there instead of rushing back for the ferry back to Macau. After much struggling about rooms and where, I decided to just find a balance with getting a cheap private room with the comfort of a private toilet and bathroom. I really just need some place to sleep the night and maybe leave my overnight bag while I'm out.

I extended an invitation to my Sis to join me on the Monday after, since she wanted to go to that Jade Market I went to. She seems to be interested, but hasn't confirmed yet. We'll see, it's weeks away anyway.

And it's about time to work on the potential Italy trip in October/November! First thing: hunt for good flight deals.
elusivek: (Default)
Last day in London... Well. My Boss also went to London while I was there. He set up a meeting for some other side project that I'm normally not involved (it's part of another company he handles) but he asked if I had time to join him. I figured..... I was sick and tired of my friend already, so I said yes, as long as I get to leave in time for the airport (I had booked a 14.30 taxi ride to the airport because my friend complained "her bag is very heavy and she's not lugging the bag from station to station for interchange and such"). I didn't have formal wear though, he said it's fine, that he's going to show up in a cap anyway. okayyyyy.....????

So my friend said she didn't have enough time to explore The British Museum? Fine. I walked her to the door of the Museum, then I made my way to find my Boss.

Untitled

Tried to find a post office along the way. Geez. It's so expensive! If I send a postcard from Macau to the UK, it would cost me like, MOP $5, that's like... just under 50p (GBP 0.49) but gawdammit, sending a postcard from the UK to Macau was GBP 2.2????? MOP$23? I wonder if it's because I didn't go to a proper post-office-post-office. The lady said anywhere in the world as long as it's outside of the UK then it's 2.2. I wonder if this is a standard international postage so people don't have to think about where and where, like, the maximum amount someone has to pay to send anywhere. But anyway. Postcards are coming!

Untitled Untitled

So, he asked me to ring the bell, so I did. He said the bell is very loud and it will wake him up. (Yes, he wanted me there to wake him up for the meeting haha). Meanwhile, as I was waiting, the building caretaker came over and asked "how can i help you?" and I was like, I wasn't sure if this was indeed a private apartment, or a timeshare kind of deal, that one had to inform the management that you're going there, and I knew that this wasn't my boss' own apartment (I think it was a friend's), so I didn't want to divulge too much. He asked a few questions, started thinking about who lives in which flat, and all that, and asked me if it's Mr. XXXXXX (i have no idea what his friend's dad's name is) so, I just nodded LOL. He then asks "from Hong Kong right?" and yeah, that saved me. Yesssssssss..... then "But I didn't know he was coming?" and I was like oh shit (i thought again, time share deal, not his turn yet shit shit shit)

Untitled

Turns out the caretaker was only thinking out loud. He wanted to let me in, but I said "it's better I stay out, I don't have a key to go in the apartment anyway. I'll just wait for him to buzz me in. Better this way, both for you and me." Coz, I don't know if there are visitor rules or whatnot with regards to security. Soon enough he awakens! And buzzes me in. I walked up, not knowing there was an elevator LOL. Saw him in his jammies. Wanted to say there are holes in his jammies. But. yeah. I dunno. Not my place, I suppose. He gets dressed and off we go!

Untitled Untitled

Ah, the difference of walking with someone who doesn't walk behind you! I just needed him to show me which way to go and we went our merry way. I also wasn't sure what he really wanted me to do with the meeting, so I jotted down notes and such. Lucky I had some spare business cards in my card case, as he requested the other party to send some reports to me as well. (Feelin' so prepared with my cards on me LOL) I think after the meeting he wanted to invite me for lunch, but I said I had to go fetch a severely directionally challenged friend from the British Museum, so we walked togther towards Holborn. Then he went on his way, and I went on mine. Bye Boss! Safe trip back! I'm going home first!

Untitled

Got my friend, then we went back to our area.

Untitled Untitled

Was still early so we hunted for lunch. Then I thought to walk through Selfridges for some last minute souvenirs, got some Coronation chocolate (yes, I know, it's just a packaging gimmick) and then received a call from the ride at 13.30. I asked, "but I booked for 14:30?" and he said, yeah but coronation so lots of roads closed. Okay. So we headed back.

Untitled

I didn't notice any major disruption from the coronation, but there were a lot of works in the streets. In fact, most of the places we visited throughout the trip had part of the facade or building under works! We arrived 3 hours early, but lucky because the bag drop counter was open right at 3 hours before the flight. Dropped the bags, went through immigration, and had too much time. Friend continued to go shopping, so I used my card to go into the Lounge (my credit card gives me 10 visits per calendar year to visit the lounge). Isn't really all that exciting, as it seems everyone and their moms have the card too, but I got myself a small reading nook, and had some cake and water. Soon we boarded. I watched a movie, Violent Night. But, there should be so much more! I mean, I was rather appalled by the casual and blase-ness of people dying, but there should be more backstory. How did he become Santa Clause?

Untitled

After the movie, I took out my laptop and typed up the notes from that meeting I had earlier. Then I slept. Actually managed to sleep most of the flight. When I woke up properly, it was just time for breakfast. But service was abysmal this time. We got served our food, then when it was drinks, either they ran out of stuff, and said to the row in front of us "I'll be back with your drinks," drinks never came. Then when almost landing, the pilot announced "If you have any trash, the crew is collecting them now," crew came to give our the immigration papers, but nobody came to collect the trash.

Untitled

And this concludes my trip to London. Ah. Next planned holiday is end of October. Hm... can't wait :-)
elusivek: (Coffee Break)
Okay. As of writing this, I'm already back home in Macau. But I am going to finish this! Last 2 days!

Right, so on this day, it was supposed to be a free day with no itinerary. Friend suddenly said "let's go to that town I mentioned before!" I was like "?" what town? "I told you about it before, it's called Rye!" And I was like, "is it the land of Rye bread?" and she got annoyed, "you said we'd go!" I had totally no idea what she was talking about.

After she sent some links, then I remembered. She talked about this many, many, many years ago, I think we were still in our Uni days (this is like over 15+ years ago). She did not tell me this during the planning stage of this trip (which was back in September/October). I was flabbergasted. And annoyed as F as well. It's near Hastings. If this had been mentioned before, I could have made an overnight trip of like, you know, Hastings, spend the night there then go to Rye or that sort of thing. But noooooo. And then she had the gall to say "we can spend 2 hours here." And I was like, I'm not going to go somewhere that's roughly 1.5 hours one-way trip to spend only 2 hours there.

Anyway.

Welcome to Rye.

Untitled

Not having a clue of what to do, I relied on the town map at the front of the station. Saw it saying something about the Ypres Museum, so walked there. Then the "shop" location was closed with a sign indicating going further up hill. So there's a Ypres Castle and we went for it.

Untitled Untitled

That's nasty!

Untitled Untitled

Untitled

Very interesting! Booklet was for sale but I didn't buy it.

Untitled Untitled

I'm a bit in awe that people actually respect the signage.

Untitled

Untitled Untitled

It was dark, looking in from outside, and when I stepped in, must have activated some motion-detection thing and a video and audio clip started playing. Gave me the creeps, also because of that doll standing in the corner.

Untitled Untitled

Cannon garden or gun garden.

Untitled Untitled

Looked down and saw this beer garden, so down we went.

Untitled

This is a lesson for me that, I don't like cider. I like apple cider, yes, it's a bit sweet, but not regular cider.

Untitled Untitled

Then up to... I think this is the St Mary's Church.

Untitled Untitled

Seems like I missed a photo of the huge pendulum. So when you go in, there's this huge pendulum (attached to the clock tower) swinging in the middle of the atrium, and gave a soft tick-tock-tick-tock that's classic to pendulum clocks. I liked the whole thing!

Untitled

Some interesting exhibits.

Untitled Untitled

Love these old keys!

Untitled

Nice glass windows.

Untitled

Then we saw a sign that said we can go up the clock tower but at your own risk. Hm... ok?

Untitled Untitled

OK, I get it. If you are a little fat or wider then you won't be able to squeeze past.

Untitled

Then there was a room with a lot of stuff... how did they get up there then?

Untitled

Another set of rickety stairs.

Untitled

And another!

Untitled

So then I was in an... atrium of sorts? It's where the bells of the church are kept. Then BONG BONG BONG! It started ringing right when I was in this room. I got the fright of my life and maybe got deaf in one ear LOL. I looked at my watch.... 14:54... IT'S NOT ACCURATE!!!!

Untitled Untitled

A pidgeon was trapped in there, or in there by choice. I guess the pidgeon can find a way out if it inclines to do so.

Untitled

Again, going out at your own risk. My friend was scared shitless by all that signage of doom.

Untitled

But it was AMAZING!

Untitled

It was hardly scary at all, the railings were high enough that I don't feel like I'd fall. You'd only fall if you actually tried to climb over something to fall.

Untitled

Panoramic shot.

Untitled

I actually went 2 times around to admire the view. My friend had long gone back down. Talking about going back down... 上山容日竹心心落山難... easy to go uphill, difficult to go down. Yes. I initially had some trouble going down. But it was simply putting everything fallable (mobile phone, hat, etc) into my backpack, then climbing down backwards.

Untitled

Back in the mechanical room.

Untitled

Then we went down High Street and saw some cute stuff. But things have closed by then... typical towns.

Untitled

As I had a cider, it has sped up my need of the toilet, so we had to go somewhere anywhere!

Untitled

Cakes and tea!

Untitled

Continue with the walk around town.

Untitled

This is Mermaid Street.

Untitled

Antiques shop that was... closed.

Untitled

Since I had a cake I didn't feel like ice cream anymore.

Untitled

Beautiful plants!

Untitled

If I had seen this sign earlier I might have loaded this up, but by this time we had a time limit.

Untitled Untitled

Walking the other way. Oh. And cemetery/graveyards also scare my friend shitless. I tried to convince her, a Western Cemetery is not like a Chinese Cemetery. A Western Cemetery is a place of rest; meanwhile a Chinese Cemetery is a place of haunting, but there was no convincing to be succeeded.

Untitled

Awe, this tugged my heartstrings. I was baptized in a St. Anthony's (of Padua) Church. So I sat for a while.

Untitled Untitled

Added bonus, my Secondary School (High School) was under the Franciscan Missionary of Mary as well.

Untitled Untitled

Cute signs from a shop that's closed.

Untitled

When we got back to London, then it reminded me, oh yeah.

Untitled

For dinner we decided to try Five Guys (in Europe). It was OK. Back in Macau and Hong Kong, such fast food are treated like luxury restaurants and you pay an arm and a leg for them.

Untitled

elusivek: (Default)
Another highlight day, we visited the Warner Brothers Harry Potter Studios on this day.

But, we needed breakfast first. A full English breakfast would be too filling, and we were wracking our brains, so we went... McD's. Also because I wanted to try the hotcakes (pancakes). The McD's hotcakes of the past (in Macau, I mean those 30 or so years ago), were thick, fluffy, and substantial. Nowadays, those hotcakes are light, feels more airy (but not the Japanese souffle pancake type) and very thin, feels like you haven't eaten anything. The pancakes here are nice! But they don't come with butter? Oh, and the syrup is nice and thick here too! In Macau, it's all liquidy and runny.

Untitled

So I did slip in some London usuals for my friend and we went to the British Museum.

Untitled Untitled

I've been here twice already so I just hung around near the entrance and looked at the gift shop items, and, it was annoying (again). Back home, on Taobao, this shop that claims to be the British Museum Shop would periodically pop up. It does have cute items, but I was always wary that it's just a knock off.

Untitled

Seeing the actual shop items, I was convinced, because there were just the usual boring stuff. But... that cat is all around!

Untitled Untitled

And some other cats. This would make a great coffee table book!

Untitled

Oh the map said "don't miss out this exhibit" so I went to this other room to have a look.

Untitled Untitled

I did a second surveillance of the gift shop and spied this sign. So, apparently, the Taobao shop indeed IS an official British Museum shop. With merchandise catered to the Asian clientele. WTF?

Untitled

Anyway!

Untitled

Yay!

I had planned this post to just show a couple photos, but, I'm going to dump them around. I'll say somthing if there is something to say about them.

Untitled Untitled

Yeah well, started with the gift shop instead of the tour haha, sorry! A niffler would be soooo cute! And there's Fang too!

Untitled Untitled

Yes I had a childhood crush on the rich guy back then.

Untitled Untitled

Great Hall was amazing.

Untitled Untitled

Untitled Untitled

Untitled Untitled

Untitled

I enjoyed reading this board very much. One of the cats was hilarious "would rather be carried than do any work" and one of the animals, I don't quite remember which had some comment like "best at doing nothing" or something like that.

Untitled Untitled

Untitled Untitled

Untitled

This was supposed to be a photo in the Forbidden Forest, but well, my camera went off at a dark point.

Untitled

I only folded this chatterbox when I left and I can't get it to show the middle part. Hm.... But anyway, the middle part wouldn't combine into a full image anyway, so I wonder if the middle part is just moot.

Untitled

Mandatory shots!

Don't worry, I will only post 1 carriage out of the six or seven LOL.

Untitled Untitled

Untitled

I wanted something light and wanted to order a "BBQ Pulled Pork Fries" but the kid at the counter entered "BBQ Pulled Pork Dog with Fries" so I had to eat a hot dog *rolls eyes*

Untitled

This guy must have been doing some Tik Tok, which is fine. But maybe please don't hoarde the litter bin. I wanted to throw some stuff out but I dared not disturb his tripod!

Untitled

Again, I had to plan the shot, ask my friend to hold the camera the same way I did and don't move. But she didn't wait for the people to walk out first.

Untitled

Because she can't drive (she had to take the driving exam 4 or 5 times I think)

Untitled

I think the scenes with the Knight Bus were night scenes, so I never properly saw the Knight Bus. So, I had previously bough a set of HP fountain pen inks and one of the colors was "Knight Bus Purple". I guess I finally found out why.

Untitled

Number 4 Privet Drive.

Untitled

Iconic!

Untitled Untitled

But Harry's second room ended up in Number 3 Privet Drive LOL.

Untitled

The Herbology Greenhouse! (was the canon name also Greenhouse? I don't remember)

Untitled Untitled

Monsters and masks were cool too!

Untitled

Untitled

I didn't watch the last few movies (and haven't read the last few books), but I think I've watched so many snippets here and there that I know more or less what happened.

Untitled

Untitled Untitled

Untitled

They had the locks moving too, it was so cool!

Untitled

Untitled Untitled

There's like a screen or some projection (I still think it's a screen because the dragon comes out flat) and a dragon comes out and roars and there's smoke and all that haha.

Untitled

Diagon Alley.

Untitled

Of course, behind all these amazing things, there's the drafting and design and story board team!

Untitled

Really liked this one.

Untitled

Nice!

Untitled Untitled

Untitled

Final ice cream at the Frog Cafe (or whatever the name it is). But the staff.... twirled a slanted one. It was weird holding it almost horizontally to eat the ice cream.

UntitledUntitled

There's more! We then walked to....

Untitled

King's Cross.

Untitled

The merch here were basically the same but had a couple of different stuff. Looking at the scarf though, I like my own handmade one better!

Untitled

Onwards to dinner! This was in jest because the side project I help my Boss with is of the same name. Couldn't resist the joke that "I'm working even on holiday" LOL.

Untitled Untitled

The food wasn't bad, in fact it was quite good. But I still can't shake the thought "Portuguese Cuisine and Fine Dining do not go together."

Untitled Untitled

Untitled

Untitled Untitled

On the way back we walked by a shop and had PEZ! Wow, I haven't seen these in the longest of times!

Untitled

elusivek: (Music Music Music!)
Bucket List # I don't really know LOL. I don't actually have a numbered list :-)

Kew Gardens! Ever since I read (part of) that manga "Emma" where she visited the Kew Gardens (don't remember exactly if that was that though, it's been a long time!), I've been wanting to visit too! Including this time, I've been to London 3 times. The first time, my travel friend was pushy with going with where she wanted to go and I had no say. (I had to "run away" early one morning while she slept just to go to the Sherlock Holmes Museum because on the previous day, while on the way to the Sherlock Holmes Museum, she saw a bus that read "London Zoo" and decided we'd go to the London Zoo.) The second time was a trip in January, so that travel friend (a different person) vetoed going to the Kew Gardens because it's winter. Well, this time I made sure I'd be going.

Untitled

So in my research I saw that you can have a picnic in Kews, so I searched for takeaway picnics, and found this Newens. I made the online order 2 days ahead, set the pick up time for 11:00am. On the day, we arrived early, 10:40am, so went in to ask. Apparently they didn't pack it up yet, and said they'd pack it up right then. Then people started coming in, and they served those people instead, and in the end, I got my order at 11:15. WTF? And when the lady handed me the bags she asked, "do you want to heat up your quiche?" I was like, "nah, if it could be eaten cold as-is, then I'd rather not, thanks."

Untitled

So I had ordered 2 sets of picnics, and we ate one set first, because we didn't have breakfast yet. The remaining food was kept for later. So this Original Maids of Honor tart was... pretty much like a Pastel de Nata, just with less custard.

Untitled

Ducky (or Goosey) walks around us waiting for scraps. Sorry. No scraps for you.

Untitled

The Hive was a nice surprise, I only learned of it when I arrived and picked up a paper directory. Spent some time playing with the phone camera timer and watch controlled shutter.

Untitled Untitled

Because the ground was some translucent-ish materials, scaredy-cat friend was afraid of stepping into this.

Untitled

Soon friend got moody and demanded to sit down. I made a joke asking "I thought you said you hiked with your mom?" and she retorted angrily "I haven't hiked with my mom for a long time! I do yoga!"

Untitled Untitled

"Well, I'm just repeating what you said. You said you're much better now than before and than Priscilla (made up name of her friend, she is obese and can't walk much), so you'd be okay with walking. I'm not putting words in your mouth. You said so yourself." And she shut right up because, I wasn't lying.

Untitled Untitled

In any case, we did quite a lot of walking. I think we managed to visit all the greenhouses (I think).

Untitled

Random shots at Kew Gardens for your enjoyment:

Untitled Untitled

I saw some guy with a pro-looking camera trying to shoot this duck at this angle, so I shot the same too LOL.

Untitled Untitled

All so pretty. I really enjoyed ny walk here.

Untitled

I'm just randomly posting photos so I'm not sure if I got the succulents here, but anyway, upon seeing some of the succulents, I was like "ooooh I've seen this, I know this, and I have this!" and as i'm writing this, I just remembered I meant to water my plants before I went on holiday, sh*t. Hope the not-succulents aren't dead yet.

Untitled

Stopped for the remainder of the food. Didn't manage to finish though. We kept the scones for later.

Untitled

This raven was having fun on the seat.

Untitled

This... installation? was interesting too.

Untitled

Me with the bag with the leftover scones haha.

Untitled Untitled

More greens.

Untitled

The Treetop walk was amazing! Though, I have to admit, my knees were starting to feel it. After this trip, I'm going to have to rest my knees.

Untitled

Scaredy-cat friend is scared sh*tless of these see-through flooring, so she stayed put at ground level. And a random exhibit at the Treetop walk.

Untitled Untitled

It was getting late and I rushed to the pagoda. Didn't climb up it though.

Untitled

Once again, I just couldn't resist this vertical panorama shot.

Untitled

You know, I went to Tokyo, Japan to see the sakura trees (cherry blossom) but here in London it's like there's more of them than in Japan.

Untitled

Temperate House.

Untitled

Another beautiful spiral staircase!

Untitled

Truth betold, I am somewhat afraid of heights, but in this situation, where there's a railing, it's fine. It's when the railing or barrier is low then I'd start to feel vertigo.

Untitled

Seems like I just like the spiral staircases.

Tulips.

Untitled

Another spiral staircase, this one in the Palm House.

Untitled

It was hot and stuffy inside (but of course).

Untitled

Okok, last of these spiral staircase selfies.

Untitled

I love this restaurant already for saying cash only LOL.

Untitled

There was still time, so after blundering with the return (I did not realize the same train track served 2 or more different lines), I managed to save it and go back to Baker Street. Finally brought my friend to the Sherlock Holmes Museum. I said I've been to already so I'm not going in. Scaredy cat friend, decides not to go in (because she can't go in by herself). So we roamed the gift shop, but it was SO SAD! I remember there having more merchandises! There's only so few stuff now! I'm so glad I did get my Sherlock Teddy back in 2016!

Untitled

I saw a greeting card with this "Strawberry Thief" pattern. I didn't get it, because I have no use for a greeting card, instead I saved this image haha. To skip over a few days, I later do buy a eyeglass cleaning cloth of this pattern.

Untitled

Oh yeah, friend said she wanted to have a "Stargazy Pie". You can Google it, but basically, it's a Cornish pie that has sardines sticking in and out of it as if gazing up in the sky. I did a hella lot of research and found a restaurant that had it. So off we went!

Untitled

A Fuller Ale and Pie House called The Blackbird. But apparently all that research I did was the result of a seasonal promotion. So there was no more Stargazy Pie on the menu. Might as well get a pie sharing board for 2.

Untitled

1st May, Bank Holiday. I was expecting today to be dreadful, but, it turned out rather well. We had an issue with our hotel door not locking, so we had to tell the reception and they sent someone up to try and fix it. They had the gall to say, "ah, our customers are good people, our staff are good people, nobody will go into your room, and there is CCTV in the corridors!" and I was like "... so?" Anyway, we did have everything locked up in our luggage bags, so it wasn't really pressing. THey arranged people to fix it while we were out.

Gilda_elise on DW suggested going to the National Maritime Museum, and that's what we did. It was fun.

Though, I had some issue with getting on the right train to Greenwich. I had to go ask the staff hanging around, and they pointed out where to go. All the while, friend was just walking immediately behind me.

Got dropped off at this residential and school area. Made our way over.

Untitled Untitled

We were a tad early and it wasn't opened yet. So, looking around at these globe installations outside.

Untitled Untitled

It was amusing to see them using old school method: Chains and locks for the gates.

Untitled

My friend was being a nuisance just breathing down the back of my neck and I got irritated and said we don't really need to see the exhibits SO NEAR EACH OTHER. I think my friend took offense and started mumbling to herself "alright let's meet back up at a certain time..." and walked away, without talking about the time and the meeting point.

Untitled

So just randomly throwing some photos here.

Untitled Untitled

Untitled Untitled

This was a very nice one!

Untitled

Untitled Untitled

Untitled Untitled

At the gift shop, I saw a postcard of a very nice staircase (it was either the Tulip Staircase, or some-other-flower Staircase), and so we walked over to the Queen's House as well.

Untitled

I was reading about this one when a small kid (maybe 2 years old?) dashed forward, through the low barrier, and actually poked a finger on the painting. The mother or the babysitter grabbed him quick. None of the staff saw it, but I saw it. Oopsie!

Untitled

Nice flooring.

Untitled

There we go, the staircase I saw on the postcard.

Untitled

When all was done we went to hunt for lunch.

Untitled

On the way, I saw a small corridor leading to something like a market, so we went there, and indeed, there was a market.

Untitled

Once again, I told my friend to spread out, I'd be queuing for a Turkish pancake type of thing, and she should go look for something else to eat, so we have variety. Noooooooooo. She's such a scaredy cat, so afraid to get lost, she just stuck by. Geez.

Untitled

It was yummy!

Untitled

And then I found out there's another area outside too, but didn't feel like queuing.

Untitled

Decided to have some churros but these are different? The chuuros I know I smaller? This one's huge!

Untitled

Funny side story. So I said, I have no more activities for the afternoon, that friend can finally rest her legs. Friend got flustered and said "let's go see the royal observatory as well!" Well, visiting the National Maritime and the Queen's House was free, but I didn't check out the Royal Observatory. Feeling like, it was such a novelty that friend was actually making suggestions, I said sure let's go.

Untitled

Had to walk up a hill to get there godammit!

Untitled

And then it was a paid museum too. Friend wanted to skiv off and say no, I said "I put in the effort to walk up the blasted mountain, I'm going in!" so friend went too.

Untitled

It was actually interesting too.

Untitled Untitled

Ah, the Meridian Line. I too took a photo of my friend, she took a photo of me. I know I'm not the best, but I would appreciate a little more thought to photo composition.

Untitled Untitled

There's Hong Kong.

Untitled

Cool stuff.

Untitled Untitled

The bottom part where it says BritishYard and Two Feet, and the measurements, that amused me! So in the past, people based the length of stuff on that wall? Or that measurement on the wall?

Untitled

When I asked how she wanted to get back, friend asked "what ways are there?" so I said, rail, bus, or boat. Friend chose boat, "to try it out!" Well, my friend, didn't you. notice you already went on a boat a few days ago? But anyway...

Finally did some of the basic tourist site walk.

Untitled Untitled

And my friend has no patience waiting for people to disperse.

Untitled

At St. James' Park, we got ice cream.

Untitled

He looked at me for a while.

Untitled

Yes I know, no feeding wild animals. For the record, he d idn't take it, I just wanted to take a photo, but my camera was zoomed too in, so couldn't frame my fingers as well. I know someone has explained before, and I can google as well, but I can't tell if this is a squirrel or a chipmunk. To me, all animals looking like that are squirrels. (When I hear "chipmunk" I think of monkeys, I don't know why. Maybe because of "chimpanzees"?)

Untitled Untitled

I do enjoy St. James' Park.

Untitled

They've closed an area off Buckingham Square for the specator seats for the Coronation.

Untitled

Last few photos for the day.

Untitled Untitled

During the walk back (towards Hyde Park Square), I just couldn't handle having this shadow behind my back walking and not lifting their feet properly, so continuously hearing this "sip sip sip" footsteps behind me. I purposefully walked to the very limit of the pavement and my friend asked why am I walking so dangerously? "I'm trying to walk behind you," I replied. Friend didn't understand why, so I said "I just don't like having someone walking behind my back." Maybe i'm being neurotic, but even back home, if I'm walking, and especially at night, I don't like to have someone walking behind me. I'd step aside and let them overtake me.

Untitled Untitled

My friend doesn't pay attention to where she goes, so she likes to walk just behind me. But then she's on her phone playing games as well, so when I stepped behind her, she absolutely didn't know the way. There was an intersection where after we crossed we should turn left to go to our hotel, but she just continues to walk straight on... if I didn't say "hey! this way!" she would have gotten lost... again......

elusivek: (sakura)
Group tour day! Friend wanted to go on the Stonehenge, Salisbury, and Bath tour, but I put my foot down, because I've been on that one exactly, some 12 or 13 years ago? And since I was on the fence about whether to go Oxford or Cambridge, so, I thought this would. be a good enough tour. In the end, turns out, time was really short at Oxford, but that's fine. It gives me a reason to come to UK again in future.

Aaaanyway, the tour took us to Windsor. Laadeeedaaaaa I've been here before.... soooooo.... boring!

Untitled

The walk up...

Untitled

Untitled Untitled

So everything inside, Doll's House and State Apartments were all no photos, so I have nothing to show. But as I was walking through the State Apartments, my thoughts were in the area of "huh, just opening up your house and let total strangers visit?" and then I also recalled, like on Pride and Prejudice, they actually went to visit someone's home (was it Darcy's home?) just for the heck of it. Huh.

Untitled Untitled

Yeah, don't know what else to comment.

Untitled Untitled

Just right now I do not recall the name of the chapel... St. George's? But it was not opened for visits on Sundays. Like. Weird.

Untitled

Windsor Market? No time to roam, it was a mad dash back to the bus.

Untitled

We got doughnuts!

Untitled Untitled

It was a long long way to Stonehenge.

Untitled

I just had to take this shot, but I didn't notice the panorama got a bit cut off in the corner!

Untitled

Untitled

There was only time to walk around once.

Untitled Untitled

Spied some birdies.

Untitled

The visitor centre is totally different from what I know from 12 or so years ago. I remember the visitor centre just being across the Stonehenge itself, now it's a shuttle bus ride away. And there's this almost 360º video installation that showed the progress of Stonehenge, it was cool.

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

I forgot to look up the sign explaining these huts, so I have no idea what they are.

Untitled

Meanwhile, my amazing (sarcastic) friend managed to get lost in Stonehenge. It's amazing. It was just two ways, one to the coach station, the other to the private car park. She managed to go to the private car park. Anyway, next stop: Oxford.

Untitled

I paid attention. This is the Martyr Monument. And the spot where Queen Mary burnt some three guys or so. Retroactive revenge is brutal. But. I don't know if any of those stories he told were true or not. I was a Tourism major student as well, and while I don't have a tour guide license, I did study local history, and learned of the trade somewhat. And I know that most of the times guides just swing it. I did a guiding project and the upperclassman really did just bluff his way explaining the Ruins of St Paul in Macau, OMG.

Untitled Untitled

And then the rest that I didn't really jot down LOL.

Untitled Untitled

The something theatre that doesn't have theatre, but maybe graduations.

Untitled

Untitled

I think this is the Bodlean Library.

Untitled

The something Camera. Radcliffe Camera yes! The "one shot to show you've been to Oxford, is here!"

Untitled Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

Forgot what Tower. It seems I forgot to upload a photo of Christ Church College. Tickets were sold out by then and we had only like less than 5 minutes to rush back to the Ashmolean Museum. I only sneaked a photo inside and took a photo at the entrance with my Slytherin Scarf LOL.

Untitled

On the way back, we decided to get off the bus at Gloucester Station. I was thinking of getting some Indian for dinner, and on the way, we saw a Lebanese restaurant, so decided to try that instead, since, never had Lebanese food before!

Untitled Untitled

We ordered too much though, so we had to ask for a take out box to box stuff up.

UntitledUntitled

Sort of getting used to London, and I just casually got on a bus (and a correct one at that). Friend seemed to be amazed that I didn't even need to check the phone. Well... I looked at the card on the bus stop....

Untitled Untitled

elusivek: (SMILE (Peppie))
A couple of people had asked me why Hastings and not Brighton, and, I don't know. When I was doing my research, it was Hastings that just called out to me. One observation of Hastings: THERE ARE SO MANY DOGS! People with dogs! Everywhere! Dog walks! Dog walks! Everywhere we went, everywhere were dogs! And all so well behaved!

I was in my fed-up yeah whatever stage, so I didn't particularly plan for any special breakfast. Told friend we'd just buy something at the station as then we would have an almost 2 hour train trip to Hastings. It was a pleasant ride. Especially when my friend found out the seat she sat in (opposite of me) was not facing the direction that the train was going (I mean, we boarded on the departing station. There was only one way the train could go). I managed to finish the book I was reading too! Nice!

Untitled

Arrived Hastings. Wasn't sure what to expect at first.

Untitled Untitled

Checked out the local map to orientate myself.

Untitled

Through this tunnel is the Old Town area.

Untitled

Stumbled to the West Hill furnicular (sp?). I would have walked up, but, you know, my friend.

Untitled

Up the West Hill. The view was amazing!

Untitled

Meandered over to the castle ruins.

Untitled

The lady at the entrance was nice. She said since the day was beautiful, should we decide to go back with a picnic, she'd let us in, as long as it was before 3.30pm. Lovely offer, but I wasn't going back.

Untitled

A few interesting placques and signs.

Untitled

It says no climbing but I didn't climb this. It's level on the backside, I just sat on the ledge and turned around.

Untitled

Timer shot!

Untitled

We then walked down the hill.

Untitled

It was past the main tourist street of the Old Town.

Untitled

Passed by this church. We peaked inside as I wasn't sure if it was open for tourist (I noticed a few churches now disallowed tourist visits), and a guy came out and said "sure come in and have a look!" So, in I went.

Untitled

I learn later this is the Saint Clement's Church. I'm a sucker for homemade stuff, and there was a tray of home made jams with price tags on. And they took cash; but I have to comment on the advancement of the church that they also have card payment system for donations. Paid the money for a jar of jam, the guy came over and said "Lovely jam, people come back for them!" okay, if it's good it'll be harder for me LOL. But I like that stuff!

Untitled Untitled

There was some kind of fair/procession/thing going on, but I didn't find out what it was.

Untitled

On the way to hunting for an internet-recommended Fish and Chip place. Maggie's Fish n Chips.

Untitled

Oh come on, why?

Untitled

Apparently, even that place needed reservations, but they also did take aways, so we placed our order.

Untitled

Walked down the beach to wait for our food.

Untitled

I sound like a country bumpkin maybe, but I've never seen a pebbles beach. It's all pebbles!

Untitled

Received the call that the food was ready! Yay! They had the normal haddock or cod as well, but we decided to get the catch of the day. There were 4 fishes, I forgot the other 2, but we ordered the Plaice and the Monkfish. I don't know my fishes LOL, but I'm not sure if that was a lucky guess, or it was the restaurant that filleted them well, but there were absolutely no bones. I think it was the Plaice that had no bone at all, and the Monkfish had one thick long bone in the middle, and the meat was SO GOOD. Definitely the best Fish and Chips I've ever had so far.

Untitled

Eating in the sun. I'm lucky I didn't end up sun burnt.

Untitled

Another internet recommended place. Di Pola's Italian Gelato. Yum yum!

Untitled

Then we went down the Old Town touristy street.

Untitled

Reached a plaza and again there were people gathered. These people had clothes with bells on the trousers, so there was a lot of ringing when they danced and walked.

Untitled

Then crossed back to the... not-Old-Town area.

Untitled

We went to the True Crime Museum. I was amused by the dog sign LOL. Poor doggies, they are all INNOCENT! And there was a whippet or small greyhound visiting while we were there too!. The museum was interesting but I don't think it was very well planned. It seemed to boast a lot of real True Crim exhibits, but the presentations could do better. Some exhibits didn't have much explanation, seemingly expecting that visitors already knew about the case. Well, I didn't.

Untitled Untitled

And some exhibits, like this bullet hole riddled car, had no explanation at all.

Untitled

The first thing I noticed was the iPhone LOL.

Untitled

Onwards onwards... Hastings Pier. There's a lot of these memorial benches.

Untitled

I'd say, even I was at my limit and when we reached the end of the pier I had to sit down for a while.

Untitled

Nice view.

Untitled

We had the 19:20 ticket back, and I wanted to see if we could swap for an earlier train (it did say exchangable for a fee), but the ticketing counter was closed, we had an hour to kill, so we crossed to a pub opposite for a drink and some snacks.

Untitled

How more ditzy and clumsy can one be? Only the most weird things can happen to my friend. Her phone battery was running low, so she hooked up her iPhone to be charged. And guess what, the cable broke off, and the part that goes into the phone for charging was left stuck inside the phone, no way to pull it out. How? Why? Why can all these weird things happen to my friend?

Because she doesn't pay attention to her surroundings.

Anyway, we didn't go anywhere for dinner as friend complained the food was too heavy, so we just got ourselves salad from Tesco and called it a day.
elusivek: (plane rainbow)
Day 3! Friday! Oh boy!

I've reached my bullshit limit. I should say I'm ashamed but I'm really not. Before this trip, I warned my friend, she's going on holiday with me, I'm a hardcore walker. She said it's fine, she. goes hiking with her Mom. I gave her the planned itinerary, it showed all the sights and locations we would go and the amount of walking, she comes with leather and un-sensible shoes complaining she can't walk much. WTF. Trainers? Sneakers? Sports shoes? Walking shoes? WHY would she come with pretty leather shoes? And she came in long skirts (I casually asked why didn't she come in jeans) and she said she thought we would go to religious sites that don't let you wear short skirts or casual jeans. She brought a ton of crap and complained that her bag is heavy. I don't even want to go into what she's brought with her, it's just stupid.

She was in the mentality of going on Group Tours. No. This is not a Group Tour itinerary. This is a "free walker" itinerary. Oh my gooossssssshhhhhhhhh.

So we started the day a little later today, because friend had to sleep and rest. She was up already around 6:30, went on her phone, scrolled until 6:50, then said, "I'm going to nap till 7am then I'm going to get ready."

Feel me slowly boiling. If you're up already, why can't you go get ready? Saying you will nap for 10 minutes, but really only getting up at 7:15. I wouldn't normally care, but she was surely getting on my nerves.

So since, she did not bring a hair fan (out of all the other ridiculous things she brought) she had to ask the hotel to borrow one, and so had to bring the hair fan up to the room. On the way down she tripped *rolls eyes*. I asked if she could walk, if she needed a doctor, if she needed anything, and she said no.

Off we go. Seeing as she took a tumble, I took the long way on the tube. We could have changed lines and reached our destination sooner, but I decided to sit through the trip (Circle line).

Untitled

Breakfast! A proper English breakfast, I suppose. I didn't know what a "Bubbles and Squeak" was, so I added that. We also had a blood pudding. I seem to have read/heard a lot of people saying how it's yuck and it sucks so we wanted to try it. We live in the land of tripes and liver sausages and such, this blood pudding is nothing. It wasn't bad, but I had imagined it to be more wet or juicy? Or maybe he fried it till it dried?

Untitled Untitled

Tate Britain, but it was funny that I found the way to the staff entrance instead LOL

Untitled

Here we go!

Untitled

So when I was getting a ticket (wanted to see The Rossettis exhibit), my friend said, "I'm actually not interested in art, so I'll sit and wait outside." Okay? I had given her the itinerary, I had asked her if that was ok, she had said it was all fine. So sure. I went on my way and you can bet I took my sweet time. Why Rossettis though? I guess I also went through a goth phase in my teens LOL. At that time I had a blog at Diaryland, and we had to make our own layouts and designs (I was rather creative and had some spiffy designs, if I do say so myself) and the designs featured a lot of Christina Rossetti poems. I wasn't sure if this exhibit was about this Rossetti, I came to find out it is, so I was a happy clam.

Untitled Untitled

Gift shop browsing, this book was cute! But I did not get it.

Untitled Untitled

When I was done, I texted my friend and we left.

Untitled

Got a bit confused by these arrows.

Untitled

We took the boat to the next Tate, Tate Modern. The guy told us to tap the Oyster going in, but going out they shooed us away and didn't tell us to tap. Later we found out we got charged over 15 pounds because we didn't swipe out. *mad*

Untitled

View from the boat. Standard tourists spots. Which my friend was just scrolling on her phone and not looking at any of these.

Untitled Untitled

Friend wasn't interested in Tate Modern, saying "I don't really understand art" (this will bite her ass later) so on we went.

Untitled

The Prison Museum that I was intrigued about since my last visit in 2016.

Untitled Untitled

Untitled Untitled

They had this funny free photo thing that my friend was "afraid to go into the photo room because it looks haunted." Sorry, I'm not going to let anyone stop me from having fun.

Untitled

Borough Market. I don't remember this part of the market though?

Untitled

Since I'm sort of a minor fan of Uncle Roger, he always recommended this Mei Mei restaurant, so we tried. We were still full from breakfast, so we had a simple Kaya Toast. Wasn't anything special to me. Guess we should have tried some actual food? The Sodas were okay, but we weren't told to mix it well, so we drank all the syrup (using straws) thinking it was disgustingly sweet then getting to the tasteless part of the drink in the end LOL.

Untitled Untitled

More random walk around.

Untitled

Walking over to... the VA.

Untitled

When we arrived the VA, my friend looked at me, and I looked at her. I said, "I've been here twice already. We are here solely at YOUR request. You ASKED to come here." I said this while standing in a room full of art sculptures. So. Tail between her legs, she had to go look around. I went outside to the water feature and read amongst the pigeons. It was nice and sunny one minute and I thought I got lucky with the nice weather, and as soon as I thought that, it turned overcast and chilling winds started blowing.

Untitled Untitled Untitled

Walked up the road to Harrods.

Untitled

So my friend didn't seem all that interested in Harrods and asked me why I took her there. I thought Harrods being this fancy department store with history would be an interesting place to at least have a gander around (I myself admired the elevators). I actually threw in the towel and said "alright since you're not interested, let's go." She then said she'd like to look at the souvenir bears. We went up to the Toys floor, but that wasn't what she wanted (more on that later). After getting lost in Harrods (how do you get lost in a square shaped building?) looking for the way to the basement, I found the "souvenir bears." Left my friend there and I walked around... LOOK at this beautiful line of books! I abstained and didn't buy them.

Untitled Untitled

So after placing my friend there, I had to take a break from her. I actually went back the way towards V&A and roughly a block down had this Cafe de Nata place that I wanted to try the nata when I saw it on the way to Harrods. I wasn't feeling homesick, I simply wanted to try the nata from overseas. The stuffing is a little creamier than I know it (more like custard?) but, I have to say, the shell was amazing. Nice flakey filo pastry. I liked the shell very much.

Untitled

After that, I went back up to Harrods and my friend wasn't done yet. So I waited, and finally out she comes. Since she asked if our Oyster cards only worked for the tube, and, I figured, going from Knightsbridge to Marble Arch or Baker Street by tube was basically walking the same way, but underground (due to changing trains and such), I took her to take the bus. Something was going on though so the traffic was terrible, and she complained about that. Geez. Plan your own itinerary next time. It was late, so might as well have some dinner at Bill's.

Untitled

It was a bit of a letdown. We got seated at this table that I could see the service pledge card, and guess what, NONE of the steps listed was done. No taking drink order, no getting asked if I want to pay for water or just have the tap water, no nothing. Even trying to get them to come over to order something was a whole dance, because I practically had to stand up and dance in front of them, short of going over, holding their hands and bring them over, to our table.

Untitled

Oh yeah. I was at my tipping point with the cash thing here LOL. Heck even a street stall hawker type kiosk shop wouldn't take cash and I had to pay by credit card. The cash I had on hand can practically be considered dead. So at the Toys floor at Harrods... I did something. I know Steiff Teddies are expensive (I saw one that had a lacey finish, in Rothenburg ob dem Tauber in Germany, it was unimaginable!), so when I saw them at Harrods, I said, I'd get them. But I also wasn't going to make it easy for the staff, LOL. There were very many other teddies, but I chose this one, that had a tag, but no price on it, and the other same teddy didn't even have a tag, LOL. The staff were stumped, thinking of ways of getting into the system to get the price. I knew more or less it would be in the GBP 200s in the second hand market, so wasn't exactly sure about this one. I was thinking if this was outrageously more than GBP 300 then I'd say no. When the supervisor was keying into the computer, the other staff was already removing the security tag, and I was like, no... don't take it off yet.... I haven't decided if I'd buy it or not yet.

Meet Frederic, Steiff Teddy 000430. At least it's a yellow tag, so it's not limited edition :-)

GBP 209, thank you very much Harrods, for accepting my cold, hard, cash.

Untitled

Please note, this is not a toy. This is a collector's item. Says so on the tag. Now I've brought upon myself another headache: How am I bringing it home? I'm surely not going to stuff it in my check in bag, I don't want to squash it. I also don't feel like taking it as a hand-carry, I want my hands free........ I'll think about it in a couple of days again...

Hello hello hello!

I'm here again at 7.30am in the morning, regretting my travel companion. Ah, life. Why did I ask this particular friend.

Anyway, I don't want to sound like a sour plum just complaining about stuff.

Early morning out: first thing is breakfast! Wanted to check out what this "Breakfast Club" is all about, and so off we went to one. I have never had a haloumi cheese, so I decided to add it. Yay.

Untitled Untitled

Next, really something for my friend: The Tower of London. The Yeoman Tour was fun, John (or Jon) was fun.

Untitled Untitled

After the Yeoman Tour, we were free to walk around, and so we did that. I found out there is a lot more to see than my past 2 visits.

Untitled Untitled

I don't remember the White Tower being open with exhibitions, so I guess this was new.

Untitled

I had to crack a (probably unpopular thought) joke. "Diplomatic gifts"... you have to wonder if it indeed was a gift.... *shhhhhh* sorry!

Untitled

Oh, oh, oh yeah! This guy here, his name is Keeper. When I entered the room and saw this I went "What The........!!!!!!?" and then soon behind me another voice said "What The Fuck!?" and I just muttered under my breath, "yeah, same reaction, kid," and walked away.

Untitled

The kiddy part had these mice as guides.

Untitled

Ah, the ravens. The ravens were locked up because of the bird flu. I was itching to get a toy charm so I could hang on my bag. There were various teddies (yeoman, beefeater, plain) and queen (now king?) corgis, but I figured these were the more "popular" choices anyway, so I decided to get this raven plushie. I personally thing it looks more like a penguin.

Untitled Untitled

Tower Bridge shot at the walls of The Tower of London.

Untitled

Some random things from the walls. I remember the walls weren't walkable before.

Untitled Untitled

When we were done with The Tower of London, we walked over to Tower Bridge.

Untitled

The guy said, "you can take the elevator, or you can walk. There's more to see if you walk." I repeated that to my friend, and said I wanted to walk up, she said OK. And then she complained she's tired. I wasn't at my tipping point yet, at that point, so I just ignored it.

Untitled Untitled

This is the stuff I live for. THIS IS FUN! And my friend was scared shitless up here.

Untitled Untitled

More shots from the top of the bridge.

Untitled Untitled

I saw a new doll - English Bulldog! But with those colors.... is that more french than english?

Untitled

Throughout the Bridge, this cat was hanging around, so I made a point of shooting them all.

Untitled Untitled

Engine room.

Untitled

End of the visit.

Untitled

This is a new Corgi dog toy, I think I saw a tag saying her name is Jane.

Untitled

We had a heavy breakfast so decided to skip lunch, but still stopped somewhere to sit and drink some water. Then we made our way to Charing Cross to pick up some future train tickets. It was like pulling teeth talking to that staff.

I asked, "I booked these tickets online and I need to pick up the tickets."
Staff, "it depends what tickets you got."
Me, "yes, it says I have to pick up here."
Staff, "Well, what kind of ticket did you get?"
Me, "it says advanced ticket in this summary."
Staff, "yes, so you can pick up the tickets."

We look at each other for 3 seconds.

Me, "so do I do it here, or at a machine?"
Staff, "you can do it anywhere."
Me, "Well, I'd like to pick up the goddamned tickets." (I wanted to say that, but decided to be polite.)
Staff looks at me.
Me, "... is there anything else you need from me?"
Staff, "show me the email again, I need to confirmation number."
Me: just shows the email on my phone. (while my internal eyes are rolling and soon falling off)
Staff, "and you need to swipe your card here."
Me: does just that.
Staff: passes tickets to me.
Me, "thanks for going through the trouble to get me these!"

Untitled

Passed by Waterstones at Trafalgar Square, but the cafe was full, and after a short dander around the bookshop, we went over to a cafe.

Untitled Untitled

Don't you love it when people do exactly what the signage says not to?

Untitled

At the National Gallery, we passed the shop first, and I saw this van Gogh doll and a Sunflower patterned Teddy Bear. I will soon find out why.

UntitledUntitled

Still my favourite painting. The first time I saw this painting, I got mesmerized by the details of the dress. The story of Lady Jane Grey is also really sad. The Yeoman John did mention this story as well.

Untitled

And this is why! There's a van Gogh corner now.

Untitled

Me and my inappropriate commentary again LOL. This is dangerous. Girl looking out the window? Sure, fine. Take care not to accidentally nudge or push the fishbowl out! The fish is innocent!

Untitled

Friend got so tired and had to sit for some 15 minutes. Sadly, when she was done, the gift shop was already closed so I missed out on getting some postcards.

Untitled

The plan for the day was supposed to continue on to the Big Ben/Westminster Abbey/St James' Park, but apparently friend was at her limit. I suggested watching a show or a movie so she could sit but she was all non-responsive. So we made our way back to the hotel, she napped for an hour, I was ready to just go without her, but she woke up in time and so we went out for dinner. The mozzarella sticks were wonderful!

Hello from London!

I've got some time to kill right now (just before 7am) and my friend is still lounging around in her pyjamas, and I've got nothing to do.

Day 0 - Hong Kong to London

We used to have a spiffy service where we can take a ferry directly to the Hong Kong Airport and since it drops you off already in the restricted area of the airport, so, technically, you only depart from Macau, but never have to "go into Hong Kong". After Covid-19 they've cut that service to 1 sailing a day, so, instead, we had to take the "Bridge Bus".

Untitled Untitled

They got a similar service that would take you from Macau to the Hong Kong International Airport, but you still had to get off the bus to go through immigration and customs with your bags, then get back on the bus. And at least, on a bus, you don't get sea sick when the sea is unsettled.

Untitled

So apparently my friend got herself an e-reader, but some China off-brrand. Took out our e-readers to compare. Looks more or less the same, only hers wasn't hook up to Amazon. I might get a China off-brand one in the future when I need to replace it (it's one-third the cost). We'll see when I get there.

Untitled

Last Asian meal before we fly. Korean stone pot rice.

Untitled

As I guessed, the in flight food was mediocre. They didn't have tomato juice either. Oh, and I had the relatively most painless flight, I've found out the joys of the absolute middle seat LOL. My friend complained that she got non-stop nudged and pushed when people walked along the aisle, so she couldn't sleep at all. I was able to sleep off around 4 or 5 hours until my butt got numb and I had to turn, and the person behind me was rather decent too. Nobody bothered me to stand up for the toilets LOL.

Untitled Untitled

Okay, got to London, smooth immigration. Apparently the EU passport still had a slight advantage to my friend's SAR passport. Since we were together, the guy told us to go to the "Middle queue" usually for families. If not, my friend would have have to go to the longer queue. Lucky. Got our local SIMS, made our way to drop off the bags at the hotel. (No, we are not staying at the Hyatt)

Untitled

Then off to the Bank of England. We arrived around 10:15, everything done by 12:30. They didn't exchange coins and I have 7 GBP of 1-pound coins that are dead money. Hm... Guess I'll have to find a donation box and drop them off? Have to be one of those Bank-associated charities, I read somewhere.

Untitled Untitled

Since we got extra time so I swapped the itinerary for a bit. Covent Gardens for lunch.

Untitled Untitled

I don't really know why I bothered with changing the GBP notes now. It really seems that everywhere we go, it's cashless payment only. And you can't even use your old style swipe or stripe credit cards. It has to be those new chipped contactless payments *Shrugs*

Untitled

And then back to the hotel to officially get our room.

Untitled

They gave us a high floor (technically 3F but the room number starts with a 2). I liked the room enough. My friend is complaining it's a long climb with her heavy bag.

Untitled Untitled

View out from the room.

Untitled

So next stop, early dinner. I somehow got mixed up. I don't know why I thought we had to go to The Shard, when we actually had to. go to the Sky Gardens. So we had to walk. I didn't mind the walk, but my friend was silently revolting by dragging her feet.

Untitled

Past the Monument.

Untitled

And arrived!

Untitled

Wasn't really that far away, come on, don't be a baby!

Untitled

Early dinner.

Untitled

Untitled Untitled

Here's us. The lady at the entrance said "No Slytherins allowed," my brain was slow and couldn't react. I should have said "But I've got my Potter Glasses on!"

Untitled

Past Leadenhall Market which was a big let-down!

Untitled Untitled

And then we called it a night and went back to our rooms, given my friend didn't sleep well. Conked off by 10pm. Today is another day!

I forgot the annoying quirks of this friend LOL. More if I feel like writing. I think she's finally ready to go.

Countdown

Tuesday, 25 April 2023 14:37
elusivek: (Default)
Last mad dash around the office, then I'm scramming at 3pm ish, going home, quick shower, then I'll be off.

I was originally assigned on a seat that's more in front, but given that my friend and I are hoping to sit together, I've gone down a few rows.

The only thing I don't exactly like being in the back or middle is... choice of food. LOL.

Yeah, airplane food is nothing to tell home about, and either choice would not be yummilicious anyway, but I'd like to at least have the choice made available. There were a few times when we were seated in the middle, and, the front part had the food cart coming up to down, and the back part had the food cart coming down to up, so inadvertently those seated in the middle were the last to get served. And there was no more alternates to choose from.

And last night I found out one of the wheels of my luggage is busted. Well, should I say, the plastic part around the wheel (the soft cushion part of the wheel?) had crumbled away. Geez. What luck. I don't have time to replace the wheel nor the bag, so I'll just have to risk it. Worst cast I'll take a cab in London so I minimize wheeling the thing around. But I think it should be fine. It's a 4-wheeled type of luggage, not the 2-wheeled type. So if I wheel it flat upright, it's still got 3 wheels to roll.

A colleague has delightfully suggested I go claim insurance after I fly, but alas, the caveat of travel insurance and luggage is... only the contents of your luggage is insured. Everything outside: the handles, the zips, the wheels, are not insured. At least, according to my past experience.

When I'm back I'll scour youtube and other sources to see how to replace the wheels. Taobao has quite a selection of wheels, so I have to investigate how to measure and choose the wheels.

I'm kind of worried that things will happen while I'm away. It's always alike that. When I'm in the office, nothing comes up and I'm idle most of the time. Then when I'm on holiday, that's when things happen, and I have to do things, remotely or somehow beg someone to do it for me. I'm lugging my laptop with me on this trip, and I've set up and ensured the Remote Desktop thing works for in case something does come up and I need to work on stuff at night, but it's absolutely infuriating if that does happen.
elusivek: (plane rainbow)
I'm kind of elated that I'm flying in less than 5 days. The weather here is terrible now. Muggy. Hot. Humid. Ugh. That, and the tendency here to have the A/C blasted on, so it's like, you'd think to dress light because it's so hot and stuffy outside, but then you go anywhere indoors, the office, the mall, a shop, and the A/C is at full blast, so you are freezing, so you HAVE to take a jacket with you, but with the outside being to hot you'd think "Nah, it can't be that bad that I need a jacket", and then wham! YES, you DO NEED a jacket.

And then you get sick.

I've been careful. I have a cardigan at the office, so I can go to work and out and around without taking a jacket with me. But sometimes if I go somewhere without dropping by at the office, then I'll be caught out cold.

The forecast for London says it will be in the teens and low-teens for the duration of my stay. But I don't know why I've got a sneaky suspicion I'll die of overheating while there, especially during the noon times when the sun is out. Did I mention I actually got a tan while in London in May 2006? In the London Eye too. We were roasted alive in there. It was brutal.

All pertinent tickets are in place. I've paid off all my credit cards so I have full credit limit on all of them. I've got the old cash ready. But. Now that I think about it, should I keep some of the Queen silhouette notes? Since now it's King Charles, they'll eventually change out the cash notes again................? But even if I keep one each of the Queen notes, it's a.... "For what?" I'm no collector, I'm also no reseller etc. And apparently London is trying to go "cashless", I've booked 2 restaurants that states "We are cashless. Bring your credit cards."

I guess I should write up a list of souvenirs to get. Because a colleague gave out Panadol tablets as "souvenir" a few months back, it sounds like my colleagues are expecting me to bring the same. And this is why I hate getting souvenirs or announcing to the office that I'm going on holiday. The expectation for souvenirs.

Not to mention those that have the audacity to ask you to help them buy stuff. "You're going to Europe? Help me buy this and this and this and this!" The thing is:

- That means I have to allot some of MY holiday time to run THEIR errand.
- Most of the time they don't give me the money for that, which, since they are asking for a favor to buy stuff, I'd say it's best if they give the money first, but then, it's actually BETTER that they DON'T give me money, because then I'm not OBLIGATED to run that errand for them.
- Say I do go about and do that, then I have to leave space in my baggage to carry that stuff for them.

I think I'll just buy 2 boxes of Turkish Delights at the airport on my way back and consider the souvenirs done. They can go into the pantry snack cupboard. And as to why I consider Turkish Delights as souvenir from the UK... it's been ingrained in my brain.... I actually had a colleague who's from Turkey, and he would sometimes go on holiday and visit his daughter in the UK. He'd bring a particular brand of Turkish Delights that's more chocolate than the gel candy and it's actually good. I remember him saying that it's not because he's Turkish, it's just because that particular brand is just that good, and that he buys it at the Heathrow airport on the way back. Granted, I don't remember the brand LOL, neither the box design, but it's now in my head "souvenir from the UK = Turkish Delights". I'll see when I'm there.

Because it was a bonus holiday today (7-April Good Friday), meaning... it was a public holiday but I forgot about the existence of this particular public holiday date... I went on a trip to Hong Kong.

Ferry what ferry? I got a ticket for the 9.30 ferry and the ferry was late.
Untitled

It never quite occurred to me, but then I noticed today that in Hong Kong, there are certain streets that don't have traffic lights nor zebra crossings, simply this "look *direction*" reminder and that if there's no oncoming traffic, pedestrians can cross as they like. And yes, I was looking for those side street alley-way stores but it was a tad early and nothing was opened yet.
Untitled Untitled

And so... I went for breakfast. Breakfast at 11.30am-ish? Okay, brunch. This place had an all-day breakfast menu, and had that souffle pancake too, but I didn't want the English Breakfast as I was saving my stomach for other snacks that I'd come along throughout the day, and I was feeling for something savory, so, I found a middle ground. Avocado salmon and pancake.
Untitled Untitled

Next I went to the Central Market again, where they refurbished to make it a trendy artsy shopping centre. The OCD-ness or the Capricorn in me gets endlessly vexed when seeing people disregard big-worded instructions.
Untitled

There's this eco-friendly store that sells things without packaging and you buy by weight. I was looking at these incense sticks and up comes a lady trying to explain everything in.... broken English. I wasn't feeling devious quite yet, so I just let her explain. And then she tried to sell me candles in a coconut shell. By then I decided I had to say something. "I'm looking at the incense sticks, thanks." And she left me alone.
Untitled

In a totally unrelated store, because after buying some incense sticks, I went to another corridor and that was the street food corridor, I saw a stall selling vegan ice cream.
Untitled

So I ordered a single scoop young coconut flavor ice cream. I thought they'd give me a cup but no, the single scoop came in a coconut shell topped with a cone and some coconut shavings too LOL. So I had to find those cocktail tables and eat it. Mid way though, I got bored and started scooping the ice cream into the cone, then cleaning up, and went ahead and walked around with the ice cream in hand. Oh, and by the way... that ice cream was flavorless.
Untitled Untitled

I wanted to go to the Times Square in Causeway Bay, and was just about to hop into the underground, when an idea popped into my head. I DO NOT HAVE TO RUSH today. I have all the time (well, until 18:30 that is) in the world. So, instead, I hopped on a tram. It was a gutsy move, as I did not read where the destination was, but figured I could see the tram tracks and can see where the next stop is LOL.
Untitled Untitled

Got to the Times Square and went to the Doraemon pop up store. Cute. Very small.
Untitled

Then as I was leaving I found a side street that had the stalls opened, so I walked through them. I wasn't really looking for anything in particular.
Untitled Untitled

Then an idea struck. I follow a pens-and-ink shop on IG and decided to check that out. It was located in Sham Shui Po, so it was a bit of a ride away, but off I went.
Untitled

The ink collection was amazing (for me), as, nowhere in Macau has a shop just for inks. But, I didn't like the staff there. They were noisy, talked amongst themselves. The upper floor was staff only, maybe their storeroom or staff rest area. And they were yelling to each other from up to down and down to up. Then came some drinks/snacks delivery for them (something like door dash or uber eats I suppose) and the yelling commenced again "hey you ordered me the wrong stuff!" "What? You said chocolate, it's chocolate!" "oh geez! I'm going up to the toilet then!" I originally had planned to buy a nebula whatnot ink (the ink is shiney and is the color of the universe or something like that) but all that chitty chatter killed my shopping and browsing mood. I mean, it's fine for staff to talk amongst. themselves, but screaming across floors is really..... not acceptable.
Untitled Untitled

Then the shop next door had an interesting name. But it's a fortune telling shop.
Untitled

Since I was out there in the northern area, I decided on randomly walking around.
Untitled

I saw signage that said there's a jade market nearby. Since I started my foray into precious stones and gems, I wanted to get a piece of jade. So... there I went! An interesting haggling tactic was, when a shopkeep tried to sell me jade and I looked at the wares, then I looked at the tagged price (HKD 6800), I very simply asked them in perfect non-accented Cantonese "you're not seriously going to charge me this?" and they were all in shock. I got the price down to some HKD 1750. I think I could have haggled some more, but I wasn't up for the long unending "fight". And then when I went to pay with my credit card, as it was another staff, she went all "erm... please..... write.... name.... sign...?" and again I said in Cantonese "oh alright, you mean to sign the slip right?" and she went "aren't you a foreigner?" I had my face mask on, so I pulled it down, showing my *obviously foreigner face* but speaking in super colloquial cantonese "I never said whether I was or was not a foreigner," and I guess she couldn't compute and went brain dead LOL.
Untitled

I attempted to walk back (I was in Yau Ma Tei at that point) to Tsim Sha Tsui, but my shoes were starting to bother me. Usually they don't but I put on a piece of plastic on one of my toes because I had cut away a piece of hard skin (which I shouldn't have done it but old habits die hard) and was now again getting blisters (that toe sort of slips under another toe so always gets blisters if there's no hard skin on it) so I put that silicon thing to spread out that toe, but it also spread out the other toe, so the shoe was a tad tight. I went on the underground to get to Tsim Sha Tsui.
Untitled

The Tsim Sha Tsui station got a lot different from I last remembered so had to look at the map.
Untitled

Found the place I wanted to go to. Saw some interesting teas. But didn't buy any. Bought a postcard though.
Untitled

Then I decided to go on the star ferry back to the island side of Hong Kong.
Untitled Untitled

Had to walk over the pedestrian bridge back to the IFC.
Untitled

I figured I should eat something, there was a Shake Shack. I had always wanted to try the Shake Shack in Macau, but since it's a bit out of the way, and I saw one in Hong Kong, so I tried. Next place I should try is Five Guys, just opened in Macau less than a month ago.
Untitled Untitled

Hunted for a toilet and got over-amused by this restaurant.
Untitled

Then made my way back. Since I still had time to kill, I decided to not go directly to the ferry terminal, but crossed back to the street side (the bridge would have taken me directly to the ferry terminal).
Untitled

Random weird cartoon characters on a building.
Untitled

I actually managed to go on standby and hopped on an earlier ferry (my ticket was for 18:30 return). Technically, I came back on the 17:30 but that ferry had some malfunction and only departed at 18:00. I got flipped off by someone seating on the wrong seat (on my seat!) and I said "you're sitting on my seat. Read the seat number." They still said I was on the wrong side of the aisle. So I made a point of walking all over, then a staff came by and this person flagged the staff to try to argue, and the staff said that I was right. So the pair then asked if I really insisted on sitting on my assigned seat, and I said "Well, I already had to walk the big detour to get to this side of the aisle, I could go around again, so it's your call if you would like to make your detour around the boat."

Of course, they didn't move. Man. I don't mind swapping seats, but don't be rude when you don't know how to read the seat number.
Untitled

My loot for the day: incense sticks, the Doraemon cloth that only now I found out is not a furoshiki (furoshiki is square, this is long, so you hang it like a poster, I suppose), a cat postcard for someone I'm going to send to later, a stack of plain white postcards, and 2 jade bangles.
Untitled

Mom says they're glass. I think since it's in a certified "Jade Market" as indicated by the Hong Kong Tourism board, it wouldn't be fake. It might be inferior quality, I'll concede to that! She then told me to go give it to her jeweller friend to authenticate, and I was like, hey, if we suspect it's fake then let's not authenticate anything. Let me enjoy my jade bangle without worrying about it being real or not.

On this final day, we left early-ish because although our departure airport was at Narita Airport, we wanted to go visit the city of Narita itself. Apparently, Narita was the place for Unagi-don うなぎ丼 (Japanese eel rice).
Untitled Untitled

We reached the shrine there. Throughout the trip, whenever we visited temples and shrines, my friend got herself a Shuin, but due to the coronavirus thing, all these temples changed their Shuin format to, you just buying a piece of paper with the Shuin, then you stick the Shuin to your book.
Untitled Untitled

At this Narita Temple though, they took the book and wrote the Shuin in your book. So my friend was slightly annoyed that she left her book in her luggage that was in the coin locker.
Untitled Untitled

Since it was the end of the trip, so of course, I went to get my last omikuji fortune. For me it was like I went to Thailand to "Change my fortune" LOL. I started in Japan with the bad fortune, and after that I took 3 more fortunes and it got progressively better until this last one where I got the best blessing 大吉. The slightly spooky/worrying thing was all these sort of mentioned my getting sick this year (but eventually getting better) so, despite not being superstitious, I guess it's a call for me to get myself checked out.
Untitled Untitled

We had taken a queueing number for the Eel place there and then it was our turn to go into the restaurant.
Untitled Untitled

I thought we were sharing one Unagi-don, and a grilled Anago and dashimaki, but my friend ordered us one Unagi-don each and shared the Anago and the dashimaki. It was a lot of food. It was gooooooooooood!
Untitled Untitled

The Unagi was a marinated thing and the Anago was just plain grilled.
Untitled Untitled

We then slowly made our way back to the train station. On the way I got myself a furoshiki 風呂敷 but now I'm feeling a bit of regret as I should have gotten a 100cm X 100cm and the bamboo handles so that I could fashion the furoshiki into a bag, but anyway. I got a furoshiki for bento box size wrapping, and I got myself a pair of custom chopsticks. The guy doing the engraving looked at the words I wanted engraved and said "but キャット is cat" thinking I had mispelled, but I said "don't worry, yes, I want キャット and Kat."

It seems that Narita also has a lot of peanuts and peanut products. I didn't get any.
Untitled

The trip back was the usual: flight back, light shopping at the airport duty free, Hong Kong, get on a bus, get to the bridge, get to Macau, take a taxi home.

Here's also a box of cookies from the Totoro place that I didn't share photos of yet!
Untitled Untitled Untitled

And this concludes my trip to Japan.

I have to start working on London now!
